15 Things You Didn’t Know About The Sex And The City Movie

15 Things You Didn’t Know About The Sex And The City Movie

‘ve been doing some major overhauling in the back end of my blog which is very boring and very repetitive. So over the weekend I re-watched the Sex and The City movie (the first one, not the second one obviously) and re-watched the director’s edit, where you get given a whole lot of juicy details about the movie that you don’t pick up just from watching it. I love a bit of behind the scenes goss so here are some of my favourite bits… 15 things you didn’t know about the Sex and the City Movie.15 things you didn't know about the sex and the city movie

1. The tie dye maxi dress that Carrie wears in the lounge room scene with Mr Big when they are discussing the wedding was accidently sent early to a photo shoot in Mexico before they finished filming the scene. So they sent an assistant to Mexico to wait at the photo shoot, literally snatched the dress off the model and fly it back to New York. Apparently she had time for one cocktail in Mexico before her flight back.

2. The little red haired boy that plays Brady is actually the baby Brady from the series all grown up! The director called him back in for the movie and nearly cried because he still looked like Steve and Miranda.

3. The director always had African American women approaching him, saying how much they loved the series but kept asking – Where are the sisters? So he made the decision to cast Jennifer Hudson as Louis so there would be an African American representative in the film that was lacking in the series.

4. The clock that was beside Carrie’s bed for the whole series was actually RENTED from a guy who owned a collectables store. When they called to rent it again for the movie the clock owner tried to cash in on the big bucks so the producers told him to shove it and they found the exact same one on Ebay for $40.

5. Steve was really loved by audiences and when plans for the movie were discussed the director had heaps of mail requesting that nothing bad happen to Steve. So he had Steve do something bad instead.

6. It was a conscious decision to have Carrie in dark clothes for the middle ‘mourning’ part of the movie to allow for the gorgeous unveiling of the blue dress at Charlotte’s baby shower where Carrie really recovers from being jilted. Also when SJP dyes her locks dark… it’s actually a wig!

7. Aside from the fact that it was bloody good fun the reason behind the ‘wedding dress montage’ was purely people pleasing. The director knew that everyone would have a perfect Carrie Bride in their head because they had invested so much in the series and in Carrie as a character and he felt that everyone needed to see their ‘own’ Carrie Bride represented. I think it was an excellent choice.

8. When the Vivienne Westwood dress arrives at Carrie’s house as a gift from the designer… the hand writing is actually that of the gorgeous Ms Westwood. Fabulous.

9. When Carrie and Miranda have the fight and then they talk about it out the front of Carrie’s house in the cab in the rain, the Indian cab driver nodding along silently is the same cab driver that was used in series two when they had the ‘Up the butt’ conversation in the cab. Awesome.

10. Charlotte goes jogging in Chanel earmuffs.

11. The hat that Carrie wears in Mexico is by Hermes and was, for some unknown reason really valuable, so it arrived on the set with a personal guard and was whisked away seconds after they wrapped the scene. Weird.

12. When Patricia Field wanted to symbolise the unity of the girls she dressed them all in similar colours at the same time. Like at the fashion show when they are all happy and they have their lives together. They are all dressed in greys, blacks and whites.

13. When they were shooting the ‘I curse the day you were born!’ scene with Charlotte’s water breaking out the front of the resturant there was a fire drill across the road at the catholic girls school and all these wool kilted teenagers came screaming out of the building saying ‘We love you Mr Big! We love you Mr Big!’. So Chris Noth turned around and said ‘Shouldn’t you be in school?’ and one of the girls replied ‘Abso-fuckin-lutely!’. Gold.

14. Patricia Field had a pink tie and a blue tie all ready for Harry to wear depending on whether the baby was a girl or boy. She only found out it was a girl a few minutes before the scene.

15. The song playing at the end of the film was sung was Jennifer Hudson.

I love movie trivia. It’s especially cute that Brady is the original Brady!

I love SATC so much. I’m actually watching the Special Features DVD from the series. My sister and I halved the price of the entire box set, and I’ve been watching it non-stop since it arrived.

Oh I LOVE S&TC – I can’t believe you waited until now, however I’m glad you did because the above is brilliant!! I literally laughed out aloud at #13 – just as my boss walked behind me!

    May 28… May 28!

Oh, this is so juicy and great reading. Thanks for this. I loved it. I will ALWAYS watch the commentary now, especially on SATC. xx

That’s brilliant, I always read the trivia on IMDB after I watch a movie but had never thought of watching the director’s commentary, thanks for the tip! And what brilliant trivia, it’s about time I watched that movie again, get myself ready for the next one!

Hah! I KNEW that was the same cab driver, and everyone with me in the theatre disagreed. Of course, we were watching the movie while sitting in front of a homeless man who spent the entire time taking a nap and snoring loudly, so it may have just been that everyone else was distracted and missed it…

Aaah, this totally made my day! Thank you.

I’m going to be one of ‘those people’ (haha!), but it really bugged me that the one African-American woman cast in the film was someone’s employee. I know, I know, I’m being all P.C.

Also (and now I’m just ranting), why on earth does Carrie need an assistant, anyway? She seems to have no end of free time to answer her own email. And she hardly ever seems to actually write anything. Is a huge misrepresentation of what being a writer is like …

…. having said that, though, I really enjoyed the movie and want to see it again. And I love all the pretty clothes and shoes. So my rants are negated somewhat. 🙂

    A xx

I think you’ll have to go all the way back to season one now… it’s a viscous cycle, isn’t it. I’ve actually had a copy of the DVD unopened in my living room until just a month or two ago. I watched it but didn’t get to the commentary. yet. I have listened to most of the commentary on the series though. amazing.

#1 not surprising. poor assistants in Hollywood. At least she got a drink.
#2 that’s cute. I thought maybe he was the same kid.
#5. But what he does is almost as bad as something bad happening to him!
#6.good, cause it looks like a wig.
#7. which was your favorite one?
#3&8&9&10&15 – I knew all of these! look, I am a SATC geek too!
    #13 AMAZING story!

Ok, I loved this post in case you didn’t spot my enthusiasm 😉

  11. mysweetmuse 10 years ago

Awww, now I want to watch the commentary too!! Must.Do.It!

  12. Lita 10 years ago

Sorry, but I hate hated the film. it seemed to be made by someone who had never watched the programme, but saw lots of adverts and saw sex! shoes! clothes! and forgot that there were layers to the characters and the show. And one black girl in the whole of New York does not maketh political correction.

    🙁

The directors commentary is surprisingly awesome! I gave it a shot and now I watch it every time it’s available. A wealth of information!

I haven’t watched it for like forever but I think this is something I need to rectify immediately (or tomorrow when I have a day off!) I’m such a geek, I’m going to have this list close by when I watch it so I can fully appreciate all this behind the scenes gossip!

I am an absolute SATC fanatic (well I’m sure I’m not compared to some sectors of the internet but I’m pretty in love with the show/movies! I could watch them all (yes – even the movie sequel) over and over and I totally have. A whole bunch of my girlfriends are the same and we can refer to just about any scene or line of dialogue that applies to any situation haha.
Love these facts (I’m always too lazy to watch the little extras – maybe not as fanatical as I thought I was)!
