Why bother following fashion?

Why bother following fashion?
Carly Jacobs

The first time I spied the Prada footless knee high socks I thought they were gorgeous. I had seen waifish little Norwegian girls wearing knee highs on street style blogs and I thought my cuteness factor would benefit from the purchase of said socks. The price tag was around 3 figures which is just insane for socks so I started hunting around for similar items. Thankfully AA ripped them off in a timely fashion so I am one happy camper with my new beige and brown footless knee highs. To be honest I barely noticed the shoes in the Prada advert. I had my heart firmly set on the socks. That was until I spied these at Mollini in the Canberra Centre on the weekend. They would totally complete the look and I could strut around Garema Place (our city central) knocking the Emo brigade off their platform New Rocks with my new gradient shoes that sort-of-but-not-quite match my uber cool footless socks. And then I noticed something rather disturbing about the shoes. They are ugly. Really ugly. They are brown and black patent leather with a big icky black elastic strap. They made my feet look elephantile. And they have a certain orthopedic-ness about them which isn’t really a look that I aim for. The question is what the hell is wrong with me??? I NEVER follow catwalk fashion unless I see something really spectacular and I usually hate everything in all the shops at all times because it’s all so bland and obvious. So I have no idea what nearly made me spend $200 on something I liked for 7 seconds. Mental.

This makes me think about all those poor little rich girls out there who forked out for the Prada originals. I assume that said items are no longer covetable now that the fashion has trickled all the way down to Australia. What a waste! The investment would have been in the thousands and I am talking pounds not dollars. And here I am I whingeing about a measly couple of hundred bucks that I didn’t even spend! I’m really really really tight with my money and the thought of spending more than $20 on anything sends me into a panic. What is the point of spending stupid amounts of money on fashion when it gets ripped off and becomes yesterdays news so quickly?

The moral of this story is to only buy things that you love. And also make sure that you aren’t buying them because you saw it on the catwalk or on Mary-Kate Olsen. And just for the record I still love my socks. I’m going to buy more and wear them for the rest of my life. Because true love lasts a life time ladies… just remember that.

Na – I know and the weird shredded garbage bag jackets.

I’m totally with you on the jeans. I have a pair of skinny-ish straight leg jeans that fit like a dream. Who’d have thought it?

I’m more worried about the disturbing orange carpet/terry towelling skirt in the background. blerk.

I’ve discovered that I really really love straight-leg, slightly skinny jeans (obviously not real skinnies because that would be horrendous on my calves). I probably shouldn’t, given the girth of my hips, but for some reason they just do it for me. I bought my first pair late 2006 and don’t want to go back to bootlegs.
