How to give Christmas gifts on a budget…

Christmas decoration from Etsy

Why don’t you…

* Take special cupcakes around to all your friends on Christmas eve? Kiwi and lime cakes with minty green sprinkles? Pistacio and cream cheese with sponge cake butterfly wings? Sprinkled with pink sugar?

* Give tiny bottles of pink champagne to your girlfriends? Tie pink ribbons around the bottle neck and tuck fresh rosebuds into the bow? Bottles of boutique beer for the fellas? With tiny neck ties?

* Spend an evening making thoughtful and personal Christmas cards? Pictures of ballerinas and scraps of tulle for your favourite dancer? A letter full of beautiful quotes for a budding author? A card made entirely of stamps for your friend who collects them?

* Wrap boxes of handmade truffles in vintage scarves? Tie them with scraps of lace and fabric flowers? Give them to spectacular older women? Your fabulous university lecturer who introduced you to Keats? Your ex-boyfriend’s gorgeous mother who you secretly still have lunch with? Let them know that you think they’re grand?

* Give a personal gift voucher? Good for one afternoon tea with handmade biscuits and pink lemonade? Good for a girly evening of cocktails and dancing? Good for an afternoon playing video games and drinking beer?

* Donate to charity? For each of your friends buy a thoughtful gift for a child and put it under your local giving tree? Send your friends a card saying that you are sharing their Christmas fortune with people who really need it?

* Be a Grandma and buy really practical gifts? Snuggly winter slippers? Sensible hand cream? Good quality socks? Give gifts that people will actually use?

* Give away your talent? Sing a special song? Sew a gorgeous dress? Frame one of your photos?

Just a little Christmas taste on the first day of December… I get seriously giddy this time of year!

What a bunch of gorgeous ideas! I love the little bottles of champagne one, customisable cards to fit the receiver & you’re set 🙂

My christmas pressies this year are a real mix of purchased new, handmade and thrifted (especially books) – as a student I’ve had to reign in my budget a little but I also like being creative. I’m just taking a break from knitting a birthday present scarf… I meant to start it last week but with being sick I only got the wool this afternoon, for something that needs to be finished Wednesday… I may have bitten off more than I can chew. Wish me luck!

All lovely ideas. I love hunting down vintage scarves all year to give away at Christmas. Some of my favourites I’ve given to friends. I hope they wear them, or use them to cover little tables with stacks of books, or as throws over yummy afternoon teas. This year it’s bunches of herbs, beers and wines, bunches of flowers from the garden (and celery – I have masses), banana chutney, shortbreads and gingerbreads – all made by us. I’m printing my cards this weekend.

Gosh, I love all these ideas, but especially the truffle one! That is a wonderful idea!

No, no, don’t donate to charity. I have my personal charities that I support so someone giving in my name (but getting the tax break) for some other charity that I maybe don’t care about? No thanks. That’s all about the giver feeling good about him/herself. Sometimes “it’s the thought that counts” should mean you’re actually thinking about the gift-receiver. I’d rather receive a cupcake that an example of someone’s self-satisfaction.

Beautiful ideas! It just shows that you don’t have to be cashed up to spoil the people you care about.

Vixel – Me too! Except that all my friends now know what they are getting…

Bambola – Yay! Glad you like it!

Scribbles – I have faith! You can do it!

Lux – Do it for others and I promise the favour will eventually be returned!

Sal – Broke is understatement right now!

    Nadist – 🙂

Katiecrackernuts – That sounds awesome! I love home made goods.

KD – I’m totally going to do the truffles thing! I love making food!

Wendyb – I don’t mean donate to ANY charity I mean give a gift anonymously to a child who might not get one otherwise. You also don’t get tax breaks from that – you can’t exactly claim toys from Kmart can you.. I can’t think of anyone who would object to such an idea even they support another charity.

Kerrin – Thank god or no one would love me anymore!

I love making personal gift vouchers – back rubs and movie nights and babysitting always go down a treat with my friends.

This year I am giving my Mum a book of vouchers for hugs. I am not a very touchy person and she hardly ever gets hugs from me, so i know it will make her day.

Shannon – What a lovely idea! I’m very huggy so if I gave vouchers like that they’d be pretty useless.
