The bold words just make me emphasise them in my head as I’m reading. Which is sort of odd because I guess I’m imagining you talking to me and then changing your tone as you say those things … !

well… i happen to be getting married in september, i have 3 lovely bridesmaids (or “ladies in waiting” as I prefer to call them) and my fiance is having 4 boys. I am considering asking two other girls, but 5 just seems like too many – so I fit right in with your theory

AND, I agree with Jay on the bolding, I’m imagining you saying the whole lot with a very lilting tone, sounds kinda funny in my head, but i get the idea

With the boldness – keep it to the start of your bullet point and don’t scatter it – makes your eye dance about from bold point-to-bold point otherwise. Maybe use the bold as bookends?

(Bold) Americans have too many bridesmaids.(Bold) I’m planning a wedding with my bestie this year (hers, not mine) and through my research I’ve discovered that the majority of American weddings have around nine or ten attendants. Australian weddings barely stretch to four most of the time. Is this an unfair assumption? Can I get a survey going? (Bold)Have you had or been a part of a wedding? Where are you from and how many attendants were there?(Bold)

Oh yeah – wedding attendants? I got by without them – in my day (old lady mode on) weddings were a lot less like a kind of theatrical production Seriously … I’d be terrified by the whole thing now …

For my sister’s wedding in 2008, we had two bridesmaids, myself, and my sister’s husband’s little sister. We were anticipating having three, but my cousin could not make it back from America because of some stipulation of her job over there. I liked just having the two, though. Nice and symmetrical in the photos, with the two on each side of the bride and groom.

RE: Bridesmaids.
My best friend Mags is getting married later this year, and she and the groom are having two attendants each. Mags will have her sister and I, Jeff will have his sister and his best mate.

I have no real discoveries to report – perhaps other than organising a wedding being more work than I thought it would be. However, I’ve also found that I am positively GIDDY to be organising it with Mags. We have matching wedding planners!

The more attendants, the less special it is I feel.
I would want asking someone to be in my bridal party to be a big deal, a way of showing them how important they are to me. I can’t imagine being able to share the special experience with nine girls. Maybe it depends on the people being married or the style of the wedding. Small and intimate or big party crowd etc.

Hmmm – the weddings I’ve been a part of have never had more than four bridesmaids. Maybe I’m hanging with the wrong crowd. LOL (and yes, I’m in America.)

Once attended a wedding that had so many attendants (including multiple children) that they didn’t all fit in the front the small chapel. A couple more an they would have outnumbered the guests. IMHO, it’s selfish to ask that many folks to buy a dress not of their choosing — attendants should be limited to close family and true friends – the ones you could call at 3am. I do love it when the group is arranged by that closeness rather than by gender.

An appreciative hello gorgeous is a whole diff story than when jerks whistle.

i honestly don’t know how people can afford that many bridesmaids – it’s crazy (and expensive).

The three weddings I’ve been a part of have had four attendants (total), two attendants and four attendants respectively. The one tradition I’ve noticed in NZ is that girls who are from Pacific Island heritage tend to have LOTS of attendants – there will be five or more. A group who came to take photos at my work, she had FOURTEEN – and that was just her. The groom had almost as many Did look awesome tho!

dont know many americans so cant answer that one… i reckon i’d have 3 just because I have 3 mates who are closest to me and couldn’t choose any more or less.

I thought you were intentionally adding emphasis to certain words and out of habit (I’m a literature student) “read” them louder in my head and quite honestly, it didn’t make any sense to me at all.

As for bridesmaids, I just had my sister-in-law stand in, but we had a very small wedding, literally 14 people including the groom and I. We took over a small inn for the wedding week-end and they were still able to book a few other guests in other rooms. I find large weddings very impersonal because half the time you have people you barely know attending and I find that just kind of strange. Then again, I am like two steps away from a recluse …

The best ones I’ve been on the receiving end of:

‘Has anyone ever told you you have great legs’ from an old man riding a bicycle (which completely took me by surprise because it was about 8am in a quiet suburb and I DO NOT have great legs.. not by a long stretch.)

I think Americans do generally have larger bridal parties. That being said, the most recent weddings I’ve been to were fairly small affairs.

I’m American, and I only had two bridesmaids. My bestie since Kindergarten was my maid-of-honor and my older sister was my matron-of-honor. Personally, I don’t have that many close friends, so it was an easy decision for me as to who would be in the wedding party.

Nico I’m on the same page as you. I really want a small wedding with only people i actually care about attending. My family is huge and i barely know them, so I’d rather have the truly important ones being the only people there.
Smaggle, the only wedding I’ve been to only have 2 bridesmaids and 2 groomsmen…ushers…dude-maids…whatever theyre called.
cookie i can honestly agree that i giggle and blush whenever a bartender or customer winks at me, but i want to throw something when people “woot” at me from cars.

I used to work in online advertising and we did recommend that clients used bold to highlight pertinent points so you are on the right track but too much can be.. distracting (more my issue than yours, I have the focus of a stapler sometimes…)
A man once stopped me in the middle of a crossing a road and told me I look radiant, it actually made my day!

Oo. The bold made me read those words EMPHATICALLY which felt a little weird. But it did make it easy to scan.

At my wedding there were 8 of us total standing up there, my husband and I, a best man/maid of honour (2 beloved friends) and then our 4 siblings, 2 each, it worked out nice and symmetrical.
I wouldn’t have more than 3 people standing up for me though, same for Craig.

re American weddings; I suspect that we in Oz would find a host of strange customs if we were to delve further. For example, the way mothers-of-the-bride dress, which is virtually the same as the bridesmaids. Do the following m-o-t-b styles strike you as being just a tad att*nt*n-s**k**g and competitive?
