Celebration of Lights

Today is a special day for me. It’s my three year blogaversary. Today is even more special because I thought my blogaversary was on Saturday but it appears that I don’t know how to use calendars and apparently it’s today. Score.

I was asked recently by Reckless Daughter to respond to the question ‘What do you like best about your blog?’.

*groan*

Generally speaking I love to talk about how awesome I am. All you need to do is have a little skip through the archives to witness my gross self appreciation. I go to the gym, epic win! I complete an assignment, mini-wave in celebration of me! For some reason though I’m a little weird about congratulating myself on my blog. It feels a little, for lack of a better word… masturbatory.

However in the interest of celebrating three years of (mostly) consistent blogging I’ll get over my weird phobia of blog self-praise and make a little list…

I love…

* My banter. I think my writing style is conversational, friendly and engaging.

* How many doors Smaggle has opened for me. I’ve been featured in Cosmopolitan, Cleo and Bust magazines and made many contacts with creative geniuses.

* How unusual my statistics are. Not to go into too much detail but my blog is really, really sticky. Once my readership increases it rarely drops even by a few people.

* My readers. They are intelligent, inspiring, positive, life affirming and incredibly respectful.

* How my blog makes people smile, stand a little straighter and feel a little more amazing. Even if it’s just for a few minutes a day.

I do want to take this opportunity to thank three people who were pivotal in the success of Smaggle.

Mr Smaggle – For being my site administrator, by maintenance man, my tech talk translator and for holding my hand the whole time.
Mama Smaggle – For tirelessly editing new posts on Smaggle. Every day. For three years. The woman deserves a medal.
Browny – For taking every outfit shot from 2007 to 2009 – anyone remember the blue walled Browny days? Love.

So… my question to you is – What do YOU like best about my blog?

Love Carly

I love the writing style. It is probably creepy to admit this but I have gone through the Smaggle archives on more than one occasion and laughed out loud, forced people to listen while I read particularly funny bits aloud… you get the idea.

I love the outfit posts too!

Congrats on three years of Smaggley goodness!

    xx

Thank you love! I love that you read it out to people – that made me laugh! It's all the poo jokes right?

For me you were the first fashony blog I read, and still read.

I love that I moved to a new town with not many friends and because of your blog Imade an excellent friend through the comments and another one of your commenters (Kate) is married to the drummer in my boyfriend's band – we're yet to catch up properly but I feel like I've made another friend already!

    • Carly Smaggle 14 years ago

That's insane! Kate isn't just a commenter she's my mate! If you look early in Smaggle archives… I'm going with September 2007? You'll see a post of me at her wedding to Tim – I styled her. That's mental. Catch up with her she's awesome, we've been friends for nearly 10 years!

      • LaLa 14 years ago

Mortified.. "fashony"? Can you tell I wrote that in a rush at work?

It's such a total spinout, just shows how small Canberra is! I saw those pics on her blog (or maybe your blog) she looked so gorgeous and I loved that it was a surprise wedding! Tim and Mick went to school together but we were commenting on each others blogs for a while until she saw pics and worked it out.

See how fabulous your blog is? It's like an introduction agency but for awesome ladies instead of creepy, old men.

Wow, the Kate/LaLa story IS awesome!
What I like best about your blog is your "voice" as it comes through here. And I love the fact that you mix fashion with life-type-stuff, and that you are so positive!

    • Carly Smaggle 14 years ago

      Thanks lady! I love that!

I adore your witty, banter-ish manner of writing. It’s fantastic. I also love the way that you encourage people to participate, by asking for opinions and input. I read a lot of blogs, and regularly cull my list of favorites, but yours is one that I will be hanging onto for ages.

    • Carly Smaggle 14 years ago

I'll try to keep worthy of the hang on! x

Congrats on making it 3 years so far, Carly!!

My favourite parts of your blog are your outfit shots and of course this segment "can I get a consensus". I love that it brings everyone into the discussion.

Most of all, I really dig that this place brings be back to my Aussieness while I'm stuck in small town USA, even for just a little while.

    • Carly Smaggle 14 years ago

      That's a lovely comment. I'm glad it's obvious I'm Australian!

I don't like anything about your Blog. I come here every day because I wish I had your hair and secretly I've got this whole covert -scalp-transplant thing going on.

    Seriously.

  7. Grant 14 years ago

In all honesty though – I love Smaggle.

You were the first Canberran fashion blogger I ever came across, and I'm not really sure if I ever told you this, but you gave me the idea to be a fashion blogger.

I love your "Why don't you?"'s – even though I rarely follow their advice, and I love your ensemble posts because you've got some pretty amazing style going on.

Congratulations on three Smaggleicious years darling!

    Xx

Really? Oh bless! Canberra bloggers unite!

Honestly, I love everything about your blog and about your style. Your outfit shots are inspirational! (though living in the US, sometimes i see you wearing something I LOVE, but alas its from a store not found in the US, bummer!)

But out of everythingl, I really enjoy the "Why don't you…" posts the most.

    • Carly Smaggle 14 years ago

See, it's lovely to know that people like the Why Don't Yous because no one ever comments on them!

Three years? For real? Wow! Chur, as we say in Aotearoa.

I like your hilarious tone. Aussie forthrightness = awesome. Living in a culture that values diffidence, I WISH I could be as direct and hilarious as you are all the time.

I like your style. Your commitment to wearing skirts and dresses year-round was a total eye-opener and changed my life. For real. I wear skirts and dresses in the winter months way more than I used to.

I like your content. The issues you raise are really interesting. And I love that you're a performer and a teacher and an exercise fiend.

But I'm still waiting for my hair to go curly . .

    • Carly Smaggle 14 years ago

I mentioned you in today's post! I'm having an affair with jeans! I'm sorry!
It's so true about our culture. Let's bring back the bold!

    Happy blogging birthday Lady Smaggle!
The thing I love about your blog is just by reading your posts, I feel like I know you, kinda like an old friend.
I think you're quirky and I love the fact that your blog isnt full of advertising like a few of my old faves now are.
I love the fact that you try to interact with your readers and its not just about all you, you, you.
I also love your honesty and creativity. ๐Ÿ™‚
    Xx

I don't understand blogs that don't interact with their readers. I ADORE mine!

    Congratulations ๐Ÿ˜€

Now, the reason your blog is so special to me is that not only do you express your opinion on it, but you allow and encourage others to do the same! My expierience in the blogging world has shown me that to be liked, you’re not allowed to say you had a crap day, how you feel about body issues, or just have a giggle in general. Pretty much, to get a readership you have to collect porcelain deer, photoshop your pictures to have a “lomography” effect in photoshop, bake cup cakes in an apron you paid $80 for on Etsy and talk about Sofia Coppolla films. Sure as shit you are not allowed to say how you feel about a specific issue because having an opinion and encouraging others to have one makes people not like you. I mean, I feel like I’m not allowed to have a voice if I want readers, the reason I come to your blog is because commenting on the interesting insightful questions you ask your readers makes me feel like I have a voice and actually lets me have an opinion on the blogosphere without loosing 10 people off my reading list in an hour.

    • Carly Smaggle 14 years ago

Ah! Totally! I was thinking that the other day. Not that my blog is small or anything but that I wonder if I could hit the big time (as in more $$$) if I toed the line a little more. I'm not going to though. x

I keep coming back to your blog because you live your life with such fun and enthusiasm. It’s inspiring to me as someone who’s a little bit of a shut-in.

And to meet you in person and find that you are as engaged and interesting as you are on the blog, is a bonus.

    • Carly Smaggle 14 years ago

I DO live my life with fun and enthusiasm! Thank you!

And it was a pleasure to meet you!
