Daily Style – Making pancakes and packing.

by Carly Jacobs

29:10:101

Today was filled with pancake making, studio work and I’m just about to start packing for my weekend away for a hen’s night. Here’s what I wore.

* Jeans from Jag
* Silk top from Country Road
* Strapless top from Supre
* Shoes from Nine West
* Tie belt from a dress from Metalicus
* Kenneth Jay Lane bangle collection ebay and gifts from Mr Smaggle
* Tinkerbell earrings Disney Couture from ebay
* Oroton sunglasses from JustSunnies

And for those of you that have been asking (I’ve been VERY lazy about this!) here are the articles that I’ve written so far for Lustable. Don’t worry though, they are very Smaggle-y. I promise.

Smaggle took our $150 challenge and isn’t afraid of internet shopping.

Smaggle shows us how to shop for sunglasses online.

Smaggle indulges her perfect self at Anthropologie. – This article is evil. Don’t read it unless you have copious amounts of both time and money.

Smaggle gets acquainted with her new sunnies.

Smaggle gets more goodies in the mail.

There’s a few conversations going on in the comments sections of these posts so feel free to join in. Oh and FYI for those of you who have been wondering for years what Mr Smaggle looks like… there might just be a photo of him in one of the articles. Tantalising!

Smaggle asks – Which five people in your life are you the product of?

by Carly Jacobs

face

I read an inspirational poster recently. I want to say it was on Yes and Yes but I forgot to put on my bra this morning so my memory is not entirely reliable, but anyway the poster said -

‘You are the average of the five people that you spend the most time with.’

I thought it was such a beautiful way to acknowledge the contribution that your friends and family make to you as a person.

I made a list of the five people that I spend the most time with and the qualities that I have absorbed from them.

My man.

Ambition, determination and an adopted wheat intolerance.

My housemate.

Energy and optimism.

My bestie.

Patience, kindness and acceptance.

My man’s brother.

Scathing wit and coffee addiction.

My man’s bestie.

Sensitivity, the art of reflection and a renewed faith in the existence of stylish men.

I know that most readers at Smaggle don’t know these people but it doesn’t matter. What’s important is for you to take the time to list your five people in the comments section and share the qualities that they have that have rubbed off on you. Remember, these aren’t your favourite people but the people you spend the most time with.

Give it a go, it will make you feel all warm and gooey inside!

Love,

Carly

Are you in a style rut? What can you do to fix it?

by Carly Jacobs

My dear blogger friend Alicia at Sea of Ghosts wrote a marvellous post yesterday that couldn’t have come at a more appropriate time. She lamented that due to work restrictions and lack of funds she has found herself in one hell of a style rut which is a frustrating and rather ironic place for a fashion blogger to be.

Like Alicia, I also have a ridiculous number of jobs and like Alicia many of those jobs are physically demanding, constantly changing and to be honest pretty filthy which equals Style Rut, population… me.

So far this week I spent Monday researching, writing and doing general admin for which I wore footless tights, a grey t-shirt dress and Mr Smaggle’s hoody. Sad but true. Tuesday was spent visiting suppliers and outsourcing some jewellery work and stressed up to my eyeballs I threw on a charming ensemble of an ugly summer dress with a giant poo-brown cardigan and my studio boots. Sexy. Today my hands were plunged elbow deep in poison so I wore my crud-covered jeans, industrial leather apron and my ever stylish OH&S clogs. I’m feeling Alicia’s pain.

She writes of discarding her sleek yet dark style in favour of a more relaxed aesthetic. I feel similarly in that, once upon a time I would never leave the house with out adding at least two more accessories yet these days I find myself wearing simple hoop earrings with an understated ensemble in neutral tones and little else. What’s up with that?

Is it convenience influencing this shift in me? Is it laziness? Maturity? I decided to write a list to pin point exactly what my beef is with my current style slump and the solutions to send me back into sartorial heaven.

Work

It’s messy, busy and unpredictable.

Solution

Not all jewellers dress like hobos and not all writers dress like Eminem. Note – consider these points and apply to self.

Being too fussy

I need to really love a piece before I’ll part with my hard earned cash.

Solution

Get over it. It won’t be the last grey t-shirt dress you ever buy dude.

Lack of time

I maniacally sewed leather for sixteen hours straight yesterday in my aforementioned ugly summer dress combo with a massive hunk of cereal in my hair that I didn’t notice until Roomy Smaggle got home from work. At 6pm. I ate the cereal for breakfast, you work out the time difference.

Solution

Would it have killed me to take the time to choose a less offensive dress? Comfort doesn’t always mean stretchy pants and giant knickers. Or the complete relaxation of ones personal hygiene resulting in the storage of breakfast food in ones hair.

Exercise

I’m a regular inhabitant of my local gym so at least three times a week I get dressed knowing that I have to change in to gym gear in the near future and I think – what’s the point?

Solution

The point is I look feral enough at the gym so there’s no need to book-end the gym feral with extra hours of feral, am I right?

What about you? Are you in a style rut? Is there anything you can do to change it? What are your problems and solutions? Would love to hear your thoughts!

I can’t guarantee that I can implement all of these changes because sometimes I’m cold, late, feeling lazy or simply out of clean clothes. You know what though? It’s completely acceptable because no one can expect you to wear a ball gown to work. You wear ball gowns to a ball, that’s what they are for.

For Alicia, my friend in cruddy fashion crime.

Love,

Carly

Why don’t you…?

by Carly Jacobs

Why don’t you…?

* Buy organic tomatoes that smell like summer? Have them on sliced sourdough with a drizzle of olive oil and sprinkled with fresh basil?

* Paint your nails nude? Mocha? Sand?

* Go swimming in the mornings?

* Develop your photos in sepia tones? Have leather bound albums full of prints in nostalgic hues?

* Dab soothing gel under your eyes before bed?

* Go to bed really early? And read a book instead of watching television?

Can I get a consensus? Do you prefer pointy or round toe heels?

by Carly Jacobs

pointyshoe

Pointy toed shoes elude me. Different shades of denim come in and out of style yet you’ll always see classic blue amongst the trendy dark washes no matter what fashion is dictating. This doesn’t seem to translate to the pointy toed shoe. I would say that pointy toed shoes have hit a peak of popularity twice in my adult life. In 2001 and again in 2004. Where do they go when they aren’t in fashion? It seems that you can’t even purchase a pointy shoe unless Corinne Roitfeld wore them at fashion week that year.

Can I get a consensus? Do you prefer a pointy or round toed heel? Do you suffer through out the seasons when pointy shoes are on the ban list? Or do you not even notice until they hit the shelves again?

Would love to hear your thoughts on this. I am rather perplexed about this issue.

Daily Style – Sketch books and peppermint tea…

by Carly Jacobs

linen

Today was spent maniacally planning my exhibition, running all over the city delivering and collecting materials and then I went to a good old fashioned aerobics class. It hurt. A lot.

* Dress from Material Pleasures, the best second hand store in Canberra. They used to only have stalls at the major markets but now they have a brand spanking new shop out in Fyshwick right across from a delightful bakery that sells French bread and macaroons. It’s fairly priced and there’s brilliant stock but to be honest the staff are a little too Prozac for my liking. Just chill and let me shop. Sheesh.

* Shoes from Funkis (um… I just noticed they released new clogs. Visit the site. Immediately.)

* Wheelie bin necklace by Tae Schmeisser

* Coin necklace from Poppy Smaggle

How was your day by the way? I’ve been very slack with comments because I’ve been working so much but I read them everyday and smile. So thank you!

Daily Style – life etc…

by Carly Jacobs

serious

After visiting Puckle St to go to the bank and run a few errands I treated my sore back (pulled in yoga yesterday, that’ll teach me to take a month off!) with a leisurely swim and some time in the steam room. Now, off to have dinner at my favourite restaurant.

* Dress from Ebay
* Cardigan from Valley Girl
* Shoes from Nine West
* Necklace from Equip
* KJL tiger head bangle from Mr Smaggle
* KJL safari bangles from Ebay
* Ghetto gold and black bangle from Mamma Smaggle

What are your plans for the weekend? I’m cleaning, working, writing, designing and sleeping. And hopefully getting myself back into my regular gym schedule after being away for a month.

Daily Style – Getting back into the swing of things…

by Carly Jacobs

creamdrape

I had the most epic weekend so I’ve been a bit slow this week. I started a ten day detox program (no alcohol, sugar, coffee, wheat or dairy) to get myself in tip top shape for the next few hectic months. What is it about November always being so manic? Today I worked on my leather bangle collection, went to the Tim Burton Exhibition and made it through a full day with out coffee. Success.

* Tights from Big W
* Slip from David Jones
* Dress from Maxine’s on Brunswick Street
* Shoes from Trenery
* Wheelie Bin necklace by Tae Schmeisser
* Coin necklace from Poppy Smaggle
* Rings Smaggle made
* Earrings from Girlprops

Have a beautiful evening!

by Carly Jacobs

I’ve been following the Flickr stream of Nemrespobjecodnedjelje for four years. She is from Slovenia, has an Etsy store and is one of the most intriguing members of the wardrobe_remix pool.

Thanks Nemres! I still love your style!
