How to Style Curly Hair Tutorial – 2 from Lady Smaggle on Vimeo.

After three years of promising my fellow curly-haired gals that I would do a video on my hair, I’ve finally done it. Actually I did two. You lucky little Smagglets…

If you have any questions just ask them below – I’ll answer every single one.

For local Melbourne ladies I get my hair cut at Barbarella.

Products used include Head and Shoulders Shampoo, Schwarzkopf Leave in Treatment, Schwarzkopf Hair Thickening Lotion, Pantene Three Minute Miracle, and Schwarzkopf Taft Felxible Hair Spray.

Yay for embracing curly hair! I love my curls now, but for a few years I didn’t know how to handle them (at one stage I even shaved my hair off!) I totally agree about the cream products, and might give hair spray a go as the only time I’ve ever used it was for dance performances.

Well that’s how I got back into hairspray! I was in a play and needed uber volume and just started using it every day. It’s awesome. Get back on it!

I stopped using shampoo over a year ago and now just clean my hair with conditioner. I made the choice after I moved to the desert and discovered that the incredibly dry air combined with the sulfates in shampoos were turning my hair to straw. The trick for me has been to use silicone-free conditioner. I “wash” my hair twice a week and I find that giving my scalp a good scrub takes care of the flakey problem. And bonus, my hair never feels greasy now. I wrote about the process here: http://bit.ly/imI5Kq

I’m a big fan of showering without a shower cap and letting the humidity and moisture reactivate my curls. Now that my hair’s longer the shape has relaxed into waves, but I’m actually getting it cut tomorrow (!) and am planning on going short and choppy to encourage the curls to do their thing.

Don’t you miss the delicious shampoo smell? I can’t give it up… my hair smells like a wet, dirty puppy after a week without washing it. But I do occasionally do a ‘no poo’ wash if I’m busy.

Your hair is amazing by the way.

You come across really well on video, so natural.
It’s nice to watch a video on my favourite blogs and not have an American accent blast out at me!

This couldn’t have been better timing for me!! I adore your hair and I’m on my way to the hair stylist today to force her not to straighten my before cutting. She’s never done this before so it will be interesting. I’ve had it cut that way before though. I’m thinking of bringing your video so she can see the beginning. I think it will be fun for her in the end. Luckily, I’m moving to a bigger more metropolitan area at the end of the month and I’ve read some great reviews of curly stylists there. Thank you so much for these videos! (I don’t use shampoo and do the no poo thing, best ever for me! I haven’t used shampoo in almost 10 years)

I forgot to mention that I HATE it when watching a makeover on TV and they almost always straighten the curlygirl’s hair. If someone did that to me in the premise of a makeover I’d be very angry. Embrace your curls!!!

Oh also my hair dress cuts my hair dry! I forgot to mention that! I’ll write it in the post!

That’s what I had my stylist do for my cut today. She giggled as she chopped, it was a new experience for her and she did an amazing job. I’m loving my cut! You’re explanation of how your stylist cuts chunks out helped her to pick and choose so now I have way more volume which is what I really wanted. Thank you!!

I agree with all of your tips! (Well, I haven’t used hairspray in a while, but I am always wanting bigger hair, so I have it down on my list of things to buy next time I’m at the store now ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) Finding a good hairdresser is SO. VITAL. I used to live in this podunk little town and getting my hair cut was a nightmare, they would always straighten it afterwards so I had no idea how it looked until 24 hours later. (And it always looked bad.) I live in Austin, TX now and have the best hairdresser ever, she cuts my hair dry too and has a lot of fun with it.

Talking to non-curly-haired people about it is so frustrating, my roommate dated this guy once who was positively aghast that I paid $55 for a haircut when I could get it cut for $10. I tried explaining to him how hard it is to cut curly hair and cut it well, and he told me I should stop having layers cut into it because then the $10 people won’t screw it up. Well okay then, Mr. Expert. I need to try washing my hair less…throughout the winter I was just showering every other day & shampooing on days I shower (I don’t use conditioner in the shower, but use a cream leave in conditioner afterwards), but now that it’s summer there are some days I feel a little grody if I don’t shower. I was waiting to buy a showercap, but after hearing your rec, I’ll just give it a go without one tomorrow and see how it works. I tried doing no ‘poo for a while but because my hair is incredibly fine, it would just end up gross and weighed down (the only time no ‘poo ever worked for me was when I had hair about an inch and a half long or shorter, then I could shampoo about once a month).

And the thing your hairdresser said about the oil makes so much sense now! My ends look fine on day two or three without showering, but the roots always get a little greasy. I fix that with baby powder though, which as a bonus gives more volume.

After leaving the longest comment ever, I’ll close by saying: so nice to see you on video! You should do it more often.

Thank you so much! Seriously try the no shower cap. The steam and moisture do wonders for curls.

Did it this morning & my hair looks great! All I need to do is get some hairspray & I’ll be well on my way to hair of Smagglish volume ๐Ÿ˜‰

I’m gonna try your way this week! I’ve got curls a bit looser than yours, but I’ve got the same straight and wonky bits, too. I wash it every day and use mousse to style, but I think my hair is getting a little dry.

Question: I don’t mind a little frizz, but when I let my hair dry without any product, I’ve got Gilda Radner/Roseanne Roseannadanna frizz. Cah-razy. Gels are too heavy and make my hair way too clumpy. I’m using mousse, but it’s positively crispy. Do the creams cut down on the frizz while still keeping curl definition?

    Love your videos

Ashley – BACK AWAY FROM THE MOUSSE! It’s crunchy and wet looking. I went through a mousse phase… and just don’t. Creams cut down on frizz and will keep curl but you need to fiddle with your quantities. I use a good handful on mine before blowdrying. It seems excessive but it works for me. And little amounts in between washing. Seriously. Cream, cream, cream!

Ha thank you! I’m finding it weird that people think I’m hilarious. I wasn’t even trying!

      • Gracie_p 13 years ago

It was the rant about stylists always wanting to straighten curly hair!

  10. Nell 13 years ago

Wow! Your video was ace & you are very funny! Thank you! I have curly hair & have never really had any idea what to do with it!! I love my current hairdresser but I am tempted now to try Barbarella!!

I have a question about what your hair looks like if you don’t blow dry it with the diffuser/hairdryer .. Are your curls tighter or different?

    • Author
      Smaggle 13 years ago

Please do! The boss is called Sue I think, I haven’t tried her but I will next time I get a cut.

My hair is so weird it just does what it wants but if I let it dry naturally with no product it’s generally tight sheep like curls on top and flat dry long strands underneath. Sexy.

Hence all the cream based products. The hair dryer is great though really gives good volume which you need because with curly hair it kind of chooses where it wants to give volume.

Your blog alone makes me miss home, but hearing you talk makes it doubly so : ) I stopped having curly hair when I was a kid and my mum cut it all off because of the ole school yard nits, but I loved watching the video anyway. I agree that it would be great if you could do more.

  12. Marie 13 years ago

I fell in love with you a little finally watching you talk. Why do I live halfway around the world so that we probably won’t ever meet and be besties?

Also, having the straightest hair imaginable, I got a slight twinge of my curl-jealousy coming back. It’s ok, my son has awesome curly hair. Just have to make sure I get a girl when I’m ready for another baby in years (YEARS) to come. I’ll start googling girl baby-making, never too soon to start practicing, right?

Ah! That’s so lovely. Totally made my day! Where are you from?

On the baby girl making FYI you don’t want her BORN with curly hair. Mine was dead straight til I was nine. ๐Ÿ˜‰

And thinking about it, my son didn’t have curly hair when he was born either, and I was very puzzled. It didn’t take very long to get curly though!

Oh my goodness, you are ridiculously cute ๐Ÿ™‚ I have the straightest hair imaginable but as you said I will just embrace it and will use it to my advantage (although I don’t think I will ever stop having curly hair envy!)

Try hair powder! It’s my new favourite!

  15. cookie 13 years ago

oh really? i have massive boofy curly hair and am addicted to straightening, have even had that keratin treatment which was awesome but expensive and last 3 months, which is great but yknow.. I don’t think I’m brave enough to do naturally curly! I would feel self-conscious about having volume when I’ve spent my whole life trying to press it down!
.. great video though smaggle really awesome and inspiring.
