Gluten Free Crumpets… from a packet mix.

Gluten Free Crumpets… from a packet mix.
Carly Jacobs

For those of you who don’t know, my man is a glutard. The poor little lamb also has a rather torturous obsession with baked goods, most of which are made from delicious and poisonous wheat. I’m pretty handy in the kitchen and can whip up some mean GF cookies and cakes but things like crumpets and pies are a little beyond my scope. Recipes for these exist but they usually require the grinding of seeds into baking flours and the addition of weird sounding ingredients like ‘xanthax gum’ or ‘sorgum’. I’m not an adventurous chef at all and the second I read a word I don’t know in a recipe, I’m done. I ain’t cooking it.

Anyway, the mister has discovered that Macro Foods has released a new line of gluten-free packet mixes. He’s still a little too excited to talk sensibly about it. He stumbled up to me in the supermarket yesterday, clutching his sad little box of crumpet mix and just stared at me, all bugged eyed at the concept of being able to eat a crumpet. I quickly scanned the box for veto worthy instructions like ‘leave covered with a tea towel for eight hours‘ or any step that requires the use of electric beaters.

The instructions were super easy, it only required one bowl (and a sneaky jug) and the whole project only took about twenty minutes.

They aren’t too shabby*. They taste almost exactly like real crumpets. They are just half the size which for some strange reason is rather typical of gluten-free foods.

We also tried out the donut mix a few nights ago but they didn’t last long enough to photograph. They were pretty extraordinary. My man keeps hinting at me to make them again. And by ‘hinting’ I mean sending me several text messages a day saying ‘DOOOOONUUUUUUTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!’

I’ll be sure to share the donut experience with you next time.

Have you tried any gluten-free packet mixes? What did you think?

Feel free to share on twitter and facebook too.

* The mister felt the need to correct me on that statement. He would like the record to show that they are ‘fucking amazing’.

Where are you from? If you say the US I’m going to bring up gluten free bagels and knock you out of the park.

There are NO good gluten free bagels. Yes, from the US. I actually mostly avoid gluten-replacement things, and just don’t eat bread/bagels/rolls/muffins/etc, because they’re all so bad.

Oh this is adorable! I have no experience with gluten free food, or your boyfriend for that matter – but I’m exploding with the cuteness of him being so excited over a “sad little box” of gluten free crumpets hahahahah

You have no idea. The man is adorable. I’m going to have to kill him.

Considering everyone keeps telling me that I may have a gluten intolerance due to how I look 5 months pregnant every day – I’ve been toying with the idea of trying a gluten-free diet out. I HEART crumpets so if your mister loves them then I am sure these are a winner.

And DONNNNNNNUUUTTTTTTTS!!! 😀 Make them 😀

Ha, I will. I get so much relationship leverage from baking, it’s ridiculous.

Aw, cute! Regarding the problems with trying out recipes, I think most health / eco food stores should be selling corn flour, buckwheat flour and rice flour by now, so why is there the need to grind stuff into flour by hand? I’m puzzled!

Yeah, most of them do but I have this gluten free book that’s AMAZING but the authour is like a weird GF purist and doesn’t like the use of GF flour. I’m like bite me. Same shit, different smell.

i make gluten free muffins from the packet mix quite frequently and I am starting to prefer them over normal flour ones!

I agree! I feel like normal flour muffins are all full of air or something.

Yes! we’ve tried the donuts and they were fantastic! and so easy. I’ve been eyeing off the crumpets for a while now so I’ll have to try them too. Thanks

They aren’t as good as the donuts but much healthier.

I discovered these packet mixes while on holiday in Australia. I was also very excited. I made the donuts they were so good. The crumpet mix is calling to me from the cupboard. I am hoping that they will be available in New Zealand too.

Just wondering if you followed the packet instructions or did something different with the crumpets?

I’ve tried them a few times and I can’t get them to cook properly.  The either burn or don’t cook in the middle. I’ve tried adjusting the heat but end up one way or the other.

In the Uk last year I found pre made ones from tescos that were incredible. I wish someone would sell them here.  I actaully found a site that will send them to me, just not sure I want to pay the postage. Although they do also sell gf bagels.

My philosophy is just to realise they won’t be like normal crumpets. Ours were a bit chewy… but Mr Smags isn’t very fussy.
