Want a career in fashion? Take the advice of 5 industry professionals.
Carly Jacobs

I quite regularly attend fashion events, forums, launches and weird nondescript meal-time gatherings for the purpose of blog fodder. Most of these events end up being quite fruitless and I walk away with nothing more than a warm champagne fuzz and about thirty badly lit photos of trendy hors d’oeuvres.

Last week I got an email from Greta Donaldson PR inviting me to a fashion seminar hosted by Prospect360. It promised industry advice from the best in the fashion business with a panel boasting a journalist, stylist, publicist and blogger. The blogger in question was my friend Sarah from Style Melbourne and I figured that the odds of the event being deathly boring were far exceeded by the temptation of embarrassing the crap out of Sarah by waving to her from the front row. I accepted the invitation. Upon arrival I found fashion friends Cheryl, Cecylia and Sally and we all trudged to the front  row to cheer on Sarah.

For the next three hours we were held utterly captive by five extraordinary women who shared with us the stories of their success and handed out golden eggs of career advice. Over the next five days I’ll be profiling each of the women who spoke and passing on their wisdom to you. Here’s the schedule.

Monday – Anthea O’Connor

Anthea held the enviable title of Melbourne Fashion Editor for Vogue for ten years before starting her freelance career. She’s now the stylist and fashion commentator on The Circle.

Tuesday – Cheryl Weir

Started her career as a pattern maker and designer, releasing her own self titled brand. With over 20 years of styling experiences she is now the senior stylist at the Nine Network, styling for the red carpet, fashion spreads and television shows.

Wednesday – Jan Breen Burns

Jan is the fashion editor at The Age and has over 20 years experience in print journalism.

Thursday – Melissa Templeton

Starting her career in the travel industry, Melissa made the switch to fashion and never looked back. She’s now the National Public Relations Manager for Myer Australia.

Friday – Sarah Wilcocks

Founder and editor in chief of the quintessential Melbourne fashion blog, Style Melbourne. Sarah is a freelance writer, copywriter and online media wizard.
