How to Be A Fashion Stylist – with Channel 9 Senior Stylist Cheryl Weir

* Realise that fashion is a hard industry to work in and you’ll only survive the game if you truly love it.

* Styling isn’t just about plucking a frock from a rack and throwing it at a celebrity. There’s politics and sponsors to consider with every celebrity client that you style.

* Get back to basics and form a strong foundation of education. There’s little point in trying to be a stylist if you can’t even sew a button on a shirt.

* Learn everything you can about your profession. Never stop educating yourself.

* Be professional at all times. Never take your bad day or bad mood out on anyone.

* Your contacts are priceless. Treat the clothes you borrow like precious jewels because you need the designers more than the designers need you.

* Don’t waste your time shmoozing at every glamorous event. You need to work more than you need to play, especially at the beginning of your career.

* Don’t let your training dictate your future. You can always expand your education.

* Realise your job is a privilege but also realise the stakes are high. Dream jobs come with lots of responsibility.

* Never think that a task is below you. As a stylist, you’ll be taping shoes for the entirety of your career.
