If you’ve been reading Smaggle for a while you’ll know I’m a long time carbohydrate avoider. I don’t scream and run at the sight of a hamburger but in general pasta, rice and bread are sometimes foods in my diet rather than daily staples. I’ve long been a fan of the old Cruskit as a sneaky lower carb vehicle for protein so I was delighted when they wanted to collaborate on this post. It’s so easy to eat more calories and carbs than we need in a day and it’s little changes that make a difference. Replacing two pieces of most bread with two Cruskits will save you around 150 calories if you go with  Light Cruskits that have only 45 calories per two crispbreads. Total calorie bargain. Here are a few snack ideas for when the 3pm Mars Bar cravings hit but you want a healthier alternative.

Salami Pizza

Pizza sauce, low fat salami (30 calories) and Parmesan cheese (30 calories) on Light Cruskits (42 calories for 2).

Total Calories – 102

Salmon and Dill

Extra Light Philadelphia cream cheese (52 calories per mini tub), smoked salmon (34 calories) and dill on Light Cruskits (42 calories for 2).

Total Calories – 128

Choc Strawberry

Chocolate Philadelphia cream cheese (120 calories per mini tub) and sliced strawberries on Light Cruskits (42 calories for 2).

Total Calories – 162

Just FYI, Cruskits are also awesome as croutons in soups and salads. You can also use them to shovel cheese in your mouth. They are quite perfect for that.

For your chance to win a $100 Coles gift voucher simply comment with your most favourite Cruskit topping. Vegemite and cheese anyone?

Maybe not the best low-cal option but certainly delicious and an absolute indulgence – fig paste, prosciutto and Meredith goat’s cheese <3

I was never overly into the whole PBJ… but I have to admit I’m a touch tempted.

A smear of smooth peanut butter sprinkled with dried apple pieces. Sounds nuts, but it’s delicious.

Avacado, a tin of that fancy flavoured tuna, a herb garden sprinkle of whatever is the least tragic looking green stuff and a good place to hide… before the kids spot me and complain that their vegemite sangas are boring and they want what I’m having.

Easy. Smoked salmon and Happy Cow cheese. However, I’ve been going through a bit of a horseradish cream phase lately, so might have to try some of that with … let’s see … shaved roast beef! Yesss!

I LOVE horseradish cream! Also wisabi… I’ve been putting it on some strange things recently.

The choc-strawberry combo looks divine! *wipes drool from keyboard* I’m pretty plain and boring and usually just go for shredded roast chicken, light cheese and baby spinach leaves… Lunch without carb-guilt = awesome! 🙂

Please to be telling me more about this ‘pork floss’?

  19. dr stumpy 11 years ago

avocado, pastrami, baby spinach, cracked pepper. But you have to put the cracked pepper on the avocado BEFORE you put the pastrami on. And the the baby spinach last. Obviously.

    • Author
      Smaggle 11 years ago

You’ve got to have something to stick your pastrami to!

My food life revolves around being a vego, no dairy, very little soy, little bits of wheat and being super careful with spices. Even pepper is too much for me.

Here’s two of my favourite ways to eat the crunchy rectangles of heaven:
    1. Mayonnaise, fresh tomato, basil, baby spinach, pine nuts (or walnuts), a bit of garlic and sometimes a drizzle of olive oil.
    2. A mix of peanut butter and Vegemite. You read that right.

YUMMMMMMM! I love cruskits too, there would be a melt down in our household if we didn’t have a box in the cupboard. Definitely trying your pizza one, yum!

My favourite combination when I want something sweet is ricotta, honey and fresh figs! Or avocado and tomato with cracked pepper…mmm.

Cruskits are one of my favourite foods. I actually couldn’t have them in the house for a while because I would eat them all at once. I’m old school with my toppings – vegemite and cheese (preferably fake cheese slices…embarrassing) or crunchy peanut butter.
