I Straightened My Super Curly Hair… And I Won’t Be Doing It Again.

I Straightened My Super Curly Hair… And I Won’t Be Doing It Again.
Carly Jacobs

When I was a kid I had super thick, slightly wavy hair like Brenda on 90210. Then when I was about ten years old my hair turned into a giant ball of frizzy curls and has had a mind of it’s own ever since. When I was in high school I experimented every now and then with straightening my hair but I never got serious about it. It always looked so obvious that I’d straightened my hair so I never really pursued it as a regular thing.

Over Christmas I got sent what I’m told is the holy grail of hair straighteners. The GHD. I’ve only owned one hair straightener in my life and it was called a Musterย and it was a big beast of a thing with combs on either side and it utterly terrorised my hair on the very few occasions that I actually used it. I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about GHDs so I thought I’d give it a go. Here are the results.

Not too bad but it was only like this for about 5 minutes. Scroll down further to see how it looked the next day.

Reasons Why I Won’t Be Straightening My Hair Again

It’s a Collosal Waste of Time

It’s also boring. I listened to the first act of Les Mis and then I felt sad because a) I knew I still had at least another half an hour left of mind numbing hair straightening left to go and b) Fantine died. It was really quite an unpleasant experience. I know of people who do this several times a week. All I can say is that they mustn’t like sleeping very much.

It’s Completely Unsustainable

It looked great for the first 5 minutes but then it started to boof out like I’d stuck my head out a car window. Then I had to sleep on it. Then I had to take it on my morning run. Then I had to shower with it and by then it had really lost the plot. I refuse to have the kind of hairstyle that’s destroyed by regular activities of life, such asย sleeping and showering. I was constantly touching it up and it was only straight for 24 hours. It was like having a needy dog that required medication every hour. Too much commitment.ย

It Doesn’t Look Good

I got some lovely feedback on Facebook yesterday about this do which was very sweet but honestly after the first 5 minutesย it looked totally shite. My hair does not straighten well. I have a terrible hair cut for a straight style and because my hair inexplicably defies gravity it just looks messy and weird.

It’s Always A Let Down

Even though I love my curls I do often have fantasies about having long swishy, razor-sharp, Asian straight hair. So when the GHD arrived in the post I immediately had visions of myself with perfectly sleek geometric hair like Rooney Mara.ย ย Instead I ended up looking like this.ย

Barely 12 hours after I painstakingly straightened my hair. Gentlemen. Form an orderly queue.ย

I was going to give the GHD away on the blog but I thought it might be icky to give away a used hair gadget so it’s going off to live with Mama Smaggle. All my friends were fighting over it so I’ve done the parent thing and given it away to someone else entirely. Good riddance I say! However if I do ever get another one it’s going straight up for grabs here. They really are great little gadgets… if your hair plays nice with them.

Tell me…What’s your hair routine?

P.S GHD was provided for editorial consideration… and Mama Smaggle is stoked that it wasn’t my cup of tea.

  1. I love you both ways, but curly hair really suits the Smaggle. And I kinda like that I have someone to go when Lacey is all hatin’ on her curls {as girls will do}.

My natural hair is a hot mess. It’s just fluff. Not straight, not curly. Just fluff. So it needs straightening. But it only takes me 7 minutes to do. {And yes, I’ve timed it}.

I used to own a Muster too, circa 2000.

    xx

HA! We’re both part of the Muster club! Of course my dear, hit me up whenever Lacey needs it! Don’t let her do ANYTHING chemical to it. EVER!

In the beauty routine category I am a minimalist. I wash and go, I don’t even blow dry. If I take a shower in the morning (usually an evening showerer) I put it up in a bun to hide the wet and pin my bangs down.

My hair is pretty straight. Maybe a little bit of a wave on more humid days, but with a good bushing it’s straight as can be.

Wow when I brush my hair it goes the opposite of straight… it gets so frizzy it’s practically horizontal.

I have baby fine hair (lots of it too!) that is straighter than a ruler that I was so over trying to get full and wavy and thick looking so I cut it all off into a pixie and bleached it platinum and I have never loved it more. I used to give it a quick blow dry and straighten the front but the got very old, very quickly. Now if I want it to lay where I want it, I spray it with some water and comb it in place. Humidity here is a motherfucker so I have spent more time on my makeup so it doesn’t end up in my cleavage.
And curls are rad on you. Don’t send them away!

    CURLY HAIR.
    SMAGGLE HAS CURLY HAIR.
    STRAIGHT HAIRED SMAGGLE ISN’T SMAGGLE.

I have dead straight hair. I have a great hairdresser in South Melbourne, at Rokk Ebony, who does a great job with my hair. I wash it every second day (or every third if I put some dry shampoo in it). Once or twice a week I blow dry it then get jiggy with a hair straightener to make the ends all bendy and nice.
    My hair is very shiny.
I think we should make the best of what we were given in all aspects of life – hair is one of those.

Thanks angel. I do have a rather amusing face. It’s like jelly. You can squish it next time I see you. x

I have hair very similar to yours, Smaggle, and it reaches mid-back. I last tried to straighten it in june 2011. It cost me $50 and two hours of my life for two professional hair dressers weilding GHDs to get my hair straight for the time it took to pay and leave the salon. Once outside, the wind promptly turned it into a stringy, boofy, frizzy mess. Too much fuss for me thanks. I’ll keep rocking the “chuck in some leave in conditioner and I’m good to go” ringlets.

That’s my philosophy! I’m too used to waking up with perfectly tousled cavewomen hair, I just can’t cope with actually having to do stuff to it.

      • tuffhr 11 years ago

The whole “having to do stuff with it” is in my too-hard basket ???? It’s long and has a bit of a wave to it, so gets washed once a week (once a fortnight if I can get away with it) and brushed in the morning. If I’m feeling energetic it might get pulled back from my face or twisted up in a bun (summer heat management). I’m slightly in awe of anyone who can spend time on their hair…

    I am a serial curler.
I have thick straight hair and I have HATED it all my life!! I have been curling it since my early teens and there is no way I’d deliberately wear it straight. It is a very sad, very bad day if I leave the house with straight hair.

To curl my hair I just set it every night with old school pincurls and brush it out in the morning. I really hate applying heat to my hair so curling irons or hot rollers are a big no no! I love curly hair, I am crazy for it! My partner has curly hair and if he grumbles at me about how long I’m taking doing my hair to get ready I have to tell him to SHUT UP BECAUSE NOT EVERYONE IS LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE BEAUTIFUL NATURAL CURLS ๐Ÿ˜›

I am so very envious of your curls, so I’m slightly glad you didn’t enjoy all the hard work it takes to make it straight! I have to spend hours trying to get mine to curl, only for them to drop out in an hour. Except for that one natural ringlet I have at the nape of my neck that likes to curl around the rest of my hair and create knots. :p

I swear I pulled a neck muscle when I did it.

I have split personality when it comes to my hair. Mine is naturally curly and fine, so some days it will be a massive ball of curls and frizz and volume, others completely straight, and other with a nice, controlled wave.
My hair does straighten quite nicely, in under 20 minutes and holds up pretty nicely for two days (with a tiny touch up on the front in the 2nd day (due to the horrid Milanese humidity). The flat iron is also my weapon of choice for curling- it works like a charm.

I do agree, you look extremely bizarre without the mess. You lose your smaggle-y curly power.

Please oh please a follow up on how you keep those curls so mighty fine? I’ve been GHDing (read: frying) my frizz into submission for far too long and want to embrace what I think may be curls under the flyaways

where do you get your haircut? and who does it? My hair is almost the same as yours, but blonde. Except my Crazy curls are in need of a good cut… Mandyx

I have curly hair too (as you know) and I sometimes straighten it. My problem is that I inevitably burn at least one of my ear tips. Then I have little brown scabs that take a week to fall off. GROSS. I’m curly atm. Too much hard work.

Hey, Is it really straightened hair.
