Juicy July: What Are The Top 3 Things You’d Recommend To A Friend This Month?

Juicy July: What Are The Top 3 Things You’d Recommend To A Friend This Month?
Carly Jacobs

I went to my cousin’s engagement party on the weekend and my aunty told me about her old boss and the unusual gift registry she had on her 50th birthday. She asked each of her friends to give her what they were currently into for a birthday present. For example a book they’d recently read, a TV series they were addicted to, a CD of their favourite songs, a voucher to a great new restaurant they’d discovered. It was such a great way to get to know herย friends again and to discover new things she wouldn’t have known about otherwise.

It inspired me to start a new segment of reader recommendations. I often run surveys to get more information on the Smagglets, like how old you are or if you have kids or not, but this time I want to know what your obsessions are. So each month, I’m going to ask you for your top 3 recommendations from that month. It can be anything; a vegetable that’s been a staple in your weeknight dinners, a new workout that you’re loving or a fabulous app that’s changed your life. I’d love to hear about it!

July 2013 Top Three Favourites

1. Nathan For You.

It’s shot in a kind of Ali G style where the main guy, Nathan, approaches real businesses and offers to ‘help’ them. It’s hilarious. You’ve never seen dead pan delivery like this before. Oh and follow him on Twitter.

2. Gelativo Coffee Ice Cream Cups.

Totally. Obsessed. They’re a tiny little cup of espresso flavoured gelato. The perfect after dinner treat with the added bonus of being portion controlled so you don’t go all gutsy on a full litre tub. Plus you can hold them and feel like a giant. Double winners.

3. Look At This Instagram.

I’ve literally been making everyone I know watch this on my iPhone… then I watch them watch it because it’s EVERYONE ON INSTAGRAM! I’m pretty sure I’ve done all of them… except maybe the garden gnome. I’ve definitely done a duck though.

Hooked on Chapel Street and Brunswick Street. It’s a funky little seafood chain where you can get gluten-free salt and pepper squid. We’ve been huge fans for years but in the last few months they’ve had 2 for 1 meal deals on shopper dockets at Woolworths. We’ve eaten there once a week for at least the last two months because one of us eats for free. Highly recommended. Try the grilled fish with 1/2 salad and 1/2 chips. The perfect balance between naughty and nice.ย

Tell me… what are your top 3 recommendations from July? A product? A restaurant? A television show? What made July rock for you?

Oooh, I love this idea! Here’s some for me…
    1. Greek Yogurt – I am lactose intolerant and have IBS (not TMI, right? RIGHT?) but after eating good quality Greek yogurt every morning, I’m finding I have a much better gut. Also, I think it’s doing good things for my skin sooo win win!
    2. Noxzema – Purchased purely for the line in ‘Clueless’ (Cher: Okay, so you’re probably going, “Is this like a Noxzema commercial or what?” But seriously, I actually have a way normal life for a teenage girl.) and it works beautifully. It smells like eucalyptus and is super thick.
    3. I *hated* the way it looked on the ads, but ‘Orange Is The New Black’ has suckered me in.

I’m a greek yogurt WHORE! I love that stuff. I might just give Orange is THe New Black a whirl! I’ve seen the ads and thought meh!

      • Nicole 11 years ago

We can be Greek yogurt sluts together! The Chobani one? Freakin’ yum.
I rolled my eyes so hard at the ads for it but it’s turning out to be surprisingly good. We have Netflix so I can binge watch it and call my hubby out whenever there is a lesbian scene. He enjoys it, the ol perve that he is :p

  2. cilosophy.blogspot.com 11 years ago

    1. Fun Runs. I did Run Melbourne, there was a Sri Chinmoy event at Princes Park, and I have signed up for the 10km at Sandy Point. It is a great way to keep yourself motivated to train and exercise during these colder months. [And missy, when am I gonna see your curly mop at an event, hmmm?]
    2. Soup in a pouch – I like Pitango or Momos. They are yummy and a good way to get veggies in.
    3. Offspring. That really needs no explanation.

The blog 40 Days of Dating. I am SO OBSESSED and checkit every day then discuss it with my colleague like they’re our good friends. Get. on. it. http://www.fortydaysofdating.com
If you have straight hair like me and want big curls for the next day, I recommend an evening hair wash then braiding your hair into two pigtails the nigth before. The next morning when you pull your hair out you have the body and wave before you start curling with a wand, making it a 5 minute job! Amazing results.
I can’t think of another, so I will just say two coffees before 10am make a happy day.

That site is RAD! What day are they up to? I’m a bit old school and their blog lay out is a little bit confusing!

      • Fiona Dolan 11 years ago

Their layout is TOTALLY confusing, except for when you’re addicted and you only want to see the most recent day (mecoughme). I didn’t get it when I first started readin on day 7, but once I caught up it became much easier for me to process.
They’re up to day 23 or something?

Love that Instagram video ๐Ÿ™‚ I have two that immediately spring to mind – Breaking Bad (I’m a late adopter but friggen love it) and L’Oreal Elvive Instant Miracle: pop it on wet hair in the shower and rinse straight out for super silky hair and no residue. Winning!

The instagram video cracked me up! I’ve been showing it to EVERYONE! Breaking Bad is amazing and I’ll totally try that hair treatment! I’m always looking for something new to try!

  5. Kate 11 years ago

Ah I could do with individual gelato cups! I love the stuff but could easily eat a litre in one sitting ๐Ÿ™‚
Bloglovin – was really sad to say goodbye to Google Reader but I’ve now happily converted
Zombie Chews – I am addicted to these!
Scandal – was home sick last week and burned through both seasons. Kinda soapy but I just couldn’t stop watching.

To be honest, I’m not lovin bloglovin… it lost heaps of my favourite blogs in the move. Naughty. What are these Zombie chews you speak of???

      • Kate 11 years ago

oh that’s so annoying about losing your blogs, would be such a hassle, especially when I think about how long it took me to build up my list!
Sour strips of chewy candy, terrible for your teeth but I love them! I buy them at the local newsagents. nice 3pm treat on a busy work day

  6. lissymissy 11 years ago

    1. Frozen prawns. The most convenient frozen food after peas and pizza. Just like tins of tuna but better!
    2. Orange is the New Black. Thanks God, all eps were released at once. Fantastic show and no waiting ๐Ÿ˜‰
    3. Digital Daggers. This alternative duo that sound like Garbage cross with Sigur Ros. So you know, the bestest.

I’m so down on the frozen prawns. I always have them in the freezer AND I JUST started watching orange is the new black last night! LOVE IT!

  7. Nessbow 11 years ago

    1. The “A Song of Fire and Ice” book series (because I can’t wait a whole year to find out what’s going to happen on Game of Thrones).
    2. Dove Summer Glow body lotion. I’m not usually a self-tanning kind of girl, but this gives just the tiniest hint of colour to pasty winter limbs.
    3. Twinings Earl Grey tea. So delicious!

Have you read Game of Thrones (secret: I tried and found it too dense. Shhh!) That Dove lotion ROCKS because it’s not stinky.

  8. JessB 11 years ago

    Oh, what a great idea!
    1. TV Show – I feel in love with Newsroom when I was sick a few months ago, and I’m so excited that season two is currently showing on cable. That means it will be out on dvd soonish, and I can buy it and watch it and be happy.
    2. Food – I have just learnt how to make risotto and it’s the perfect thing to eat on cold winter days. I have three pans going on the stove at once, one fry pan to cook the chicken in, one little pot to have the stock warming in and one pot to stir the risotto in. It’s really pretty easy and I love to make a lot to have for lunches. Plus you can hide a lot of vegies in it, making bacon and chicken risotto a little healthier.
    3. Book – I’m reading Stephen King’s The Dome. It’s quite long, and has quite a large cast of characters, and I think it is a bit different to the TV show, but I’m seriously loving it. It’s too big to lug around in my handbag every day, so I keep it next to my bed to read before sleep, and it’s so good it makes me want to go to bed early to read.

I quite like Newsroom actually, must get more into it. RISOTTO! YES! Might have to check that book out love, it’s been a while since I’ve read a Stephen King.

    Okay having had a think…
    1. Mango sorbet is rocking my world right now, better for you than ice cream and no having to peel mangos (which lets face it is the worst bit).
    2. We went to an awesome restaurant the other night called Circus sauce, its a restaurant attached to yep you got it a circus (Giffords Circus, curretly on tour here in the UK) so not only did I get to watch most brilliant circus, we got to eat afterwards, it was sensational!
    3. TV wise total guilty pleasure Hollywood Me, some interior designer who claims to be huge in the US (no one ever recognises him) sends people who do lovely things off to the US to have strange beauty treatments with a pet celeb, meanwhile designer guy redoes their house. Best bit is designer guy has an long suffering assistant to frequently tell him certain things are out of budget at which point designer guy drops his eyebrows and mutters, “I am vvvvvvveeerrrrryyyy disappointed”, it is hillarious ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. The song Royals by Lorde
    2. Singing to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The musical very loudly
    3. Pitango Organic Vegetable korma (2 for $4 at the NQR around the corner) with the best roti ever (from the Asian supermarket also around the corner)
