Awesome August: What Are The Top Three Things You’d Recommend To A Friend This Month?

Awesome August: What Are The Top Three Things You’d Recommend To A Friend This Month?
Carly Jacobs

I went to my cousin’s engagement party a few weeks ago andΒ my aunty told me about her old boss and the unusual gift registry she had on her 50th birthday.Β She asked each of her friends to give herΒ what they were currently intoΒ for a birthday present. For example a book they’d recently read, a TV series they were addicted to, a CD of their favourite songs, a voucher to a great new restaurant they’d discovered. It was such a great way to get to know herΒ friends again and to discover new things she wouldn’t have known about otherwise.

It inspired me to start a new segment of reader recommendations.Β I often run surveys to get more information on the Smagglets, like how old you are or if you have kids or not, but this timeΒ I want to know what your obsessions are. So each month, I’m going to ask you for your top 3 recommendations from that month. It can be anything; a vegetable that’s been a staple in your weeknight dinners, a new workout that you’re loving or a fabulous app that’s changed your life. I’d love to hear about it!

August 2013 Top Three Favourites

Powerade Zero

Screen Shot 2013-09-02 at 8.49.05 PM

Yes I know artificial sweeteners cause cancer and brain shrinkage and drippy poo and all that other stuff but I DON’T CARE! A very wise woman who I worked with as a teenager, nursed me through my first ever hangover and passed on a piece of wisdom that stays with me to this day. Mountain Blast Powerade is the best hangover cure. I was only to drink Mountain Blast flavour and only in DIRE emergencies. As I’ve gotten older though and calories are getting harder to burn, it’s difficult to justify a 200 calorie spend on a blue sports drink. I’d rather have an extra glass of wine the night before to be honest. I swear I nearly cried when I saw this in my local supermarket. 9 calories for the whole bottle. Amazing. I’m still putting it in the ‘sometimes’ drink category though… because… you know… brain shrinkage… or something.

Mud

Screen Shot 2013-09-02 at 9.05.39 PM

Mr Smaggle and I were looking for a movie to rent the other night on Apple TV and we stumbled upon Mud with Matthew McConaugheyΒ and Reese Witherspoon. Literally the only reason why we watched it was because it has a Rotten Tomatos score of 98% which is practically unheard of. It’s about two young boys who find a washed up boat and then realise someone is living in it. I actually don’t have much to say about it, because I don’t have much to say about anything that’s almost flawless. It’s really engaging, beautifully shot and has two wonderful young actors in it who do beautiful performances. I believe it’s playing at some independent theatres in Australia but I’m pretty sure it missed our commercial cinema circuit. Watch it if you can. It’s a really, really good film.

Seche Vite

This isn’t strictly a new discovery but I just bought two more bottles from eBay and realised I hadn’t written about this stuff before. It’s a thick, kind of gluggy top coat that you apply with quite a heavy hand. It makes any nail polish shiny and smooth, kind of UV gel polish, and it makes an at home manicure last almost a full week instead of a few days. I’ve honestly scrubbed the bathroom with a three-day old Seche Vite topped manicure and come out the other end looking like I just stepped out of Β a nail salon. This stuff is the bomb and if you order it from overseas on eBay you can get a two pack for like $12. Bargain.Β

N2 Extreme Gelato

If you’ve been reading this blog for a while you’ll know that I have two main favourite foods. Porridge and frozen sweet shit. I’m not fussy when it comes to the frozen sweet shit. Even a scoop of cheap vanilla ice cream with some strawberry topping on it will please me far more than a sticky date pudding. I know where all the gelato shops are in my hood and I’m pretty quick to sniff out a new one. N2 opened not that long ago and it’s a den of frozen sweet shit sin. I had a scoop of Cookies and Cream gelato and I practically inhaled the stuff. Splendid. The menu is no-nonsense – you can get 1 scoop for $6 and instead of giving you a price for two scoops it simply states ‘you don’t need it’. Which you don’t. One cup of this delightful science cream will give you enough happy endorphins to last you all day. It’s proper full fat, full sugar, dairy deliciousness. They have really interesting flavours like Passionfruit Sponge and Caramel Earl Grey. One flavour even had bacon in it. True story.

Tell me… what are your top 3 recommendations from August? A product? A restaurant? A television show? What made July rock for you?

Orange is the New Black. It’s my new obsession and you MUST watch it immediately. It’s about a woman who goes to a low security prison. ALSO, an 8-part documentary series called The Staircase, about a woman who dies and her husband gets charged with the murder. It’s creepy and so interesting because they go into all the legal stuff and it only happened in 2001 so it’s relatively fresh. Also, the book Gone Girl. Best book I’ve read in ages! Don’t let anyone tell you the ending. If they open their mouth when you mention you’re reading Gone Girl punch them in it straight away, just to be sure. xxx

I HAVE watched Orange is The New Black! Love it! We got seriously addicted. I’m going to watch The Staircase and read Gone Girl. I will do BOTH. I need a good book for my holiday!

I’ve become incredibly addicted to “Call the Midwife,” which is a BBC show about midwives in 1950’s London. I’ve watched several hours of it already today! Also, “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” is the book I’ve been recommending to everyone, and my third obsession for August was putting together the world’s fastest makeup routine. Who has hours to stand in front of the mirror?

    • Nicole 11 years ago

OH MY GOD! I love ‘Call The Midiwife’ so much, I sobbed my way through seasons 1 & 2 last week. Chummy is the greatest.

      • Melissa 11 years ago

LOVE Chummy. And Sister Monica Joan (I think she’s my favorite).

I may or may not have watched ALL of season 2 today (coincidentally, I spent all of Labor Day watching a show about labor…)

        • Nicole 11 years ago

Sister Monica Joan and Sister Evangelina are fierce. And Trixie makes me want to buy all the Capri pants and cropped sweaters

More Midwife! Everyone loves it! Tell me more about the book please?

      • Melissa 11 years ago

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (1943, Betty Smith) is – and I hate this phrase – a “coming of age” story about a girl named Francie growing up in early 1900s New York in poverty. It’s very well written and not a difficult read at all, but the central theme of tenacity and fighting for the air & sun you need to survive (just like the tree growing in the courtyard) really spoke to me. πŸ™‚

That sounds lovely! I need to stock up on books – I’m off on a digital detox holiday in 2 weeks!

  3. Liz @ I Spy Plum Pie 11 years ago

I went to N2 on the weekend and LOVED it! In fact, I blogged about it today!
On the subject of food, I have recently started using dried cranberries in pretty much everything and I can’t get enough of them. Cookies, homemade granola, muesli bars you name it. Delicious morsels of sweetness.

I actually can’t stop thinking about it and I live walking distance from there. Terrible.

      • Liz @ I Spy Plum Pie 11 years ago

I live within walking distance too, so dangerous. Will be worse when Messina comes to Smith St later in the year too. And by worse I definitely mean better

MESSINA IS COMING TO SMITH STREET? WHEN? WHERE? I MEAN EXACTLY WHERE?????

          • Liz @ I Spy Plum Pie 11 years ago

Late October/early November to 237 Smith Street (right near Woolworths). I’m going to be eating so much gelato this summer…

  4. Nadine Armiger 11 years ago

TV show: The Almighty Johnsons. It’s the one and only show on at the moment that I watch. Book: The White Princess by Philippa Gregory. Her Plantagenet novels are SO GOOD. Tea: Twinings Lemon & Ginger – delicious.

Good ones! Is the book fiction or non?

      • Nadine Armiger 11 years ago

It’s fiction, my love (what with being a novel and everything . . ) Love these recommendation posts, so fun and so positive. ????

Ah! I missed the novel part. πŸ™‚ I’m stoked at how everyone is contributing! It’s like the good old days! xxx

      • Nicole 11 years ago

The Almighty Johnson’s is so good and, it’s a New Zealand show!

  5. Nicole 11 years ago

August was a busy month so I’m cleaning up my diet for September. I have been loving ‘Call The Midwife’, I sent the first season on DVD to my grandmother so I have someone to talk to about it.
Sparkling water, especially the Perrier by Andy Warhol bottles. They are pretty cheap here ($4 for a 6 pack) so I’ll be having a little bottle every night in place of alcohol.
Wet n Wild and E.L.F lip colours. The WnW ones are long lasting and are only $2 each. Super pigmented and moisturising.
    I love this idea!

    • Chiquita 11 years ago

I love the Andy Warhol tomato soups, packaging not contents…

      • Author
        Smaggle 11 years ago

Oh me too! I love the packaging… the soup is like 90% sodium.

      • Nicole 11 years ago

Exactly. The water bottles are really cute and the perfect size to have with dinner.

I think I’m going to have to watch Call the Midwife! Sounds right up my alley. Also… are ALL Smaggle readers called Nicole??? πŸ™‚

      • Nicole 11 years ago

It’s a really lovely show, I recommend it to everyone. Yes, but only the most fabulous!

  6. Nicole 11 years ago

I wanna love Seche Vite, but all the health risks are a little too much for my anxious brain.
I’m really into The Good Wife. I’m only up to season 3 and it’s not my usual kind of show, but the cast is just really enjoyable to watch.

And it’s just about to be Autumn here so I’m really into pumpkin everything.

    • Author
      Smaggle 11 years ago

Oh tell me more about the health risks!!! Is it just Seche Vite? Or all nail polishes?

I WISH we could get canned pumpkin puree here in Australia. I want to make pumpkin pie but can’t be arsed chopping and peeling my own pumpkin.

      • Nicole 11 years ago

Specifically Seche Vite. It actually comes with a box, but the the retailers tend to remove that before it’s put on shelves. All the health risks are listed on there. Probably not applicable to you personally but it’s known to cause birth defects. Also possible brain damage. I do know of some youtubers who had to stop using it because they were getting sick and “foggy” whilst using it.
That being said, plenty of people seem to use it and are just fine so maybe it’s only as “dangerous” as taking a medication that has possible side effects.

You know that David Jones food market beneath the Male section of David Jones? they have the kind of canned Pumpkin there that everybody uses over here. It’s right at the back of the store.
I bought some just before I went back to Sydney before coming here and blew my family’s mind with pumpkin bread.

      • Nicole 11 years ago

Oh, and since you’re familiar with Pumpkin as a sweet flavoured ingredient and I won’t hurt your brain. I have to tell you m&ms just came out with Pumpkin Spice flavour this past weekend.

  7. Nicole 11 years ago

Nicole and Melissa reminded me. I recently watched Call the Midwife and loved that too.

  8. Ali 11 years ago

hmmm… well, if anyone out there still hasn’t watched Orange is the New Black, DO THAT NOW.
also, there’s an iPad app called Disney Animated which is totally amazing. it’s $14.99 and you’ll have to deleted half the stuff on your ipad to make room for it, but it’s completely worth it. it’s basically like an encyclopedia and all the DVD extras rolled into one, its interactive and beautiful and has all the music and you’ll spend hours going through all the stuff on it. so… that.
and I went to the body shop the other day for the first time in a long time, and came out with a whole bag of goodies and my 90s love for the body shop was renewed. the girls in there were really nice but not pushy, they gave me free shower gel, and the whole experience was great. I particularly recommend the chocomania body scrub, if you want to feel like someone is baking fresh brownies in your shower. it’s amazing.

Yes. Huge support for Orange is The New Black. That Disney app sounds RAD! Oh and Body Shop! I love all the purple flavoured stuff in there.

Rocket! I am not a salad fan but I can eat a mountain of rocket on the side of any meal with a splash of olive oil. The Americans TV series. White, pale grey amd pale grey in my home for some Scandi peace and harmony. Milkshakes made with Zymil…just not the same with soy! Whitehouse Down at the movies…bet it gets mediocre reviews but my whole family found it hugely entertaining.

    • Author
      Smaggle 11 years ago

That reminded me of the time I put rocket in a green smoothie. HUGE mistake.

  10. Chiquita 11 years ago

Embarrassingly my teen has only just got the family onto quinoa, mainly in salads that require lots of chopping but whoa, the leftovers for school lunches deserve a gold medal. I’m amazed its a nifty grain. I was bit over all the rap it got, but I concede…
Another foodie thing is butter with salt crystals in it. Yum yum, I am back to eating toast and butter and nothing else on top.
I got an app could iconfetti to amuse myself during work meetings…well my kids loaded it up

    • Author
      Smaggle 11 years ago

Quinoa is RAD! I love it. Adds the perfect amount of bulk to a salad. And butter with salt crystals? Are you trying to kill me?

I think I ODed on Mother back in the 90s when they were giving them out for free, although I heard they changed their recipe so perhaps they’re a touch more palatable these day! :-). Link for Ashloc Designs please? And I’m SO putty Philly in potato bake! Genius.

      • Amy Elizabeth 11 years ago

Buffy’s a rewatch for me – I was obsessed as a teenager so it’s a nice nostalgia trip (and a reminder that it really is the best show ever!).

The bracelet is one of these: http://www.nomination.com/composable_bracelet – my and my housemates from Uni all have one so it makes me smile to wear it!

  13. Sarah 11 years ago

I’m loving some Doctor Who, stationary shopping and Fall Out Boy at the moment πŸ™‚ and I need to try some seche vite…

  14. Erika 11 years ago

The dogs. Which is a permanent obsession, but I’ve been away for 12 days and I was basically mugging anyone in the street with ANY sort of dog just so I could get a dog-fix. Such a relief to have them on tap again. Also the Spouse.

Broadchurch, which has sadly finished. However, Miss Fisher is back – yay!

Mulch and secateurs. So prosaic, but it keeps the vegie patch in control and stops the roses being feral.

  15. Jamie 11 years ago

After years of trying (and failing) to get through a Stephen King novel, I read “11/22/63” on the recommendation of a B&B owner I stayed with this summer – and I LOVED it…like hauled it everywhere, read instead of doing anything else kind of love. It is not what you think a Stephen King novel will be (blood and gore and insane clowns), but it IS an extremely engaging, engrossing story. I’m recommending it to everyone!

My other great discovery of the summer was lavender-chai maple syrup. Sounds weird, but is so amazing!

  16. Amy 11 years ago

3 Loves of the moment – 1) any book by Cathy Lamb (all of them, really but I just devoured The First Day of the Rest of My Life. If you haven’t heard of her, you must read Julia’s Chocolates first, it is still my fave of hers!)
    2) putting both fresh and dried oregano in my dinner dishes…ever so fragrant and goes with many different sorts of meals
    3) Soma Intimates – fab bras for the endowed among us (me) and really fun dresses! Who knew! No, I am not pimping for them, I just recently discovered their stuff. Look at this dress: http://tinyurl.com/ngz9har πŸ™‚

I LOVE this idea. I will be turning 50 in 2 short years (ACK!) and might just borrow this (assuming anybody comes to my party and/or would like to give me a gift). My hubby and I watched MUD a couple of weeks ago and just saw another movie Joe (not sure when it is being released – we saw it during the Toronto Film Festival) and it stars Tye Sheridan who is the 2nd boy in MUD. He is an excellent young actor. I expect to see him alot more in the coming years.
