In November, I trialed a themed editorial month on Smaggle called 20 Days of No Bullshit Health and Fitness and I got a fantastic response. I ran a mini survey for you guys and the consensus was that most people liked the themed months but would like off-theme posts as well. Thank god. Writing exclusively about health and fitness for a full month was very draining. This month’s theme is How to Have a Crap Free Christmas This December and I’ll be posting in this theme on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for the month of December.

So… what do you need to know about how to have a crap free Christmas?

How to cater for allergies when preparing a Christmas feast? A gift guide for your hard to buy for sister-in-law or BFF? How to politely decline invitations? How to be charming at Christmas functions when you’re so tired you feel like crying? Beauty deadlines for spray tans and manicures? How to take the stress out of multiple Christmas day events?

Let me know in the comments anything you need to know on how to smash out the best December ever.

How to politely deflect talking about your diet at the Christmas dinner table. Please! I’m a vegetarian, and I don’t really like it when every meal with my family becomes a debate over why I eat the way I do. I’ve been a veggie for years, but my Nanna still insists on telling me that chicken is vegetarian, and Mum is always surprised that I don’t eat seafood. Honestly, I just want to enjoy my meal and not debate my life choices!

I’m sure there are others out there with dietary ‘quirks’/needs/restrictions who don’t feel like having an extended debate about it either.

How to make family linger over coffee and dessert, instead of bolting the minute the food is gone! I always envision hosting as bonding and deep conversation, but my dad gets antsy when he isn’t eating and wants to leave.

Maybe try board games or a screening of a movie? Of staggering the food especially dessert into mini courses? You could also try the picnic approach where everyone goes to a park… there’s no escape then!

Those are great ideas! I was just talking to my mum and she suggested opening presents AFTER the meal, which I think I might try. Nobody would leave before we get to the best part, after all.

Ways to deflect the “So when are you going to find a guy/gal?” question from relatives and well meaning coupled friends. Other topics of conversation for either party to bring up.

We don’t have friends or family here (the family part I’m fine with), but Christmas is a favourite time of year for me and it would be nice to hear some traditions people can take part in when it’s just the two of them.

Last minute Christmas gift ideas are always welcome – perhaps something that you can give to a group?
