How Was Your Year?

How Was Your Year?
Carly Jacobs

I’ve been cruising the internets for the last few days and it seems like lots of people are keen to see the back of 2013. I’m totally ready for 2014 but I have to say that 2013 has been one of the most bonza years I’ve ever had. I usually compare years to food. So 2011 was a crappy sandwich with not enough peanut butter on it. 2010 was a disappointing hamburger. 2013 was a perfectly poached egg on avocado toast with the best damn skim cappuccino I’ve ever had. 2013 was the year I got invited to join The Remarkables Group, my wonderful blogging talent agency. I got to do a play this year and started a comedy duo with my best mate and writing partner Steph Lee. I went on an amazing trip to the Whitsundays with my agency and even managed to have a holiday in Thailand with Mr Smaggle. I won the Beauty and Style Blogger of the Year for Voices 2013 and I get to write for Vogue next year. I got my health and fitness mojo back and managed to shed enough kilos to fit into my summer wardrobe from pre-2010. My family and friends are all healthy and happy. I watched lots of people get married and welcomed my beautiful friend’s baby into the world. I hung out with my amazing niece and got to know her as this rad little human instead of a baby. I loved 2013. It was a great, great year.

I’m off to buy to some bubbly for a casual backyard New Year but I thought I’d leave you with my top 5 posts from 2013 to tide you over until regular posting resumes.

Thank you…

The Remarkables Group and the awesome pocket rocket Lorraine, for taking me on this year. It’s been such an incredible journey and I’m honoured to be a part of such a fantastic agency.

My fellow Remarkables. Words cannot describe these amazing people. There’s not one other blogger in my agency who I couldn’t call at a moments notice, share a bottle of wine with or crash on their couch. They are just extraordinary people and I’m so privileged to be able to work with them. They have honestly become like my second family this year and are by far the greatest perk of being a Remarkable.

My wonderful 2013 sponsors – Cheekies, Woolworth’s, L’or, Recipe to Riches and Caffitaly. It’s extraordinary to have the support of brands that I love and that fit so perfectly with Smaggle.

And last but certainly not least, my wonderful readers. I just absolutely adore my Smaggle community. You guys are smart and funny and you really care about each other. I love it when a reader asks a question in the comments and another reader answers it. I got an email this year about two of my readers who met up and started a jewellery business together. I mean, can you think of anything more awesome? You guys rock. I seriously love you.

Tell me… How was your year? Are you happy to see the end of 2013? Or are you celebrating the close of an awesome year?

I feel like that was the theme of 2013 – change. Some good, some bad. I still think there’s a very good feeling around 2014. 🙂

I’m glad you had a good year – as always it’s been a pleasure to read your site this year. I definitely fall into the category of ‘immensely glad to see the back of 2013’ camp but am excited for 2014 as I have a new job which will be really exciting and challenging. Best wishes to you Carly. Enjoy that champers.

2013 has been a real mix of good and bad for myself and several good friends, so we’re all hoping for improvements in 2014. But it sounds like you’ve got some exciting stuff coming up for 2014, and that is most excellent news!

From a reader’s stand point, you really did seem like you were having a great year. That’s awesome! I’m already high-fiving other people’s upcoming 2014s and hopefully yours is great too! Like a giant pile of rosemary chips! : P

2013 (or Twenty-Bakers Doz. as my husband and I referred to it to pump ourselves up) was a pretty darn good one. I think it was the first year of our 9 year marriage that we felt completely stable and not in some odd limbo. Anthony got made a permanent staff member for the first time in 8 years, kept his temp pay rate, and then got a mini raise, even though first years aren’t supposed to.
I prioritised experiences over things after having to ship all our things across the world twice in a very short period of time. And in making that change, got to visit three new US destinations and have plans to go to England next year for our 10th wedding anniversary.
We live in Colorado, a State I knew nothing about, but really enjoy living here. It’s the first place that we moved to that I didn’t have an anxiety-induced breakdown from the change of moving somewhere. I liked Melbourne too, but something about knowing how temporary the situation felt made me uneasy.

I’m looking forward to 2014 (or twenty-fortnightly as my husband and I are referring to it). I plan to re-open my etsy shop, the aforementioned trip to London, and we’ll finally have health insurance so hopefully that will help in many ways.

Oh thank you darling! PLEASE let me know when you open your Etsy shop I’m sucker for Etsy.

Make sure you go to London. One of my biggest goals this year is to not say no to travel. I’m a money hoarder (seriously I’ve never owned a credit card) and I just think that you never, ever regret travel. If you’re paying it off for a while! xxx

      PS I LOVE 20fortnightly.

2013 was an eventful year for myself and my family with 2 family weddings a cruise and my eldest daughter completing her schooling life ready to take on the world. Wishing you all the best for 2014 and let’s hope I can achieve a few of my goals. Vicki x

2013 was balls. I got dumped by the love of my life, I had to move out of my dream home and my Nana died. I’m so excited for 2014. I have a very good feeling about this year!

Love your work darling! It has been so great getting to know you through TRG and the blog. 2013 was probably the best year of my life but you’re right, it seemed like it was hard for many.
