How Should I Get My Hair Cut This Afternoon?

How Should I Get My Hair Cut This Afternoon?

So I’m braving a new hair salon this afternoon. I’ve had a massive struggle with finding a good curly hair cutter since my Regan left me. Regan was an artist. He’d hold my chin in his hands while his eyes glazed over and then he’d say ‘Darling… do you trust me?‘. I’d look him square in the eyes and say ‘I trust you!‘ and then he wouldn’t speak to me for the next hour as he worked his hair wizardry in his tiny, tiny shorts. I loved him.

He was responsible for this rad cut that I rocked for years.

Then he abandoned me to be a pool boy on a yacht in Brazil and left me in the hands of his salon owner. She was lovely and did a great job maintaining Regan’s work but it just wasn’t the same. I sought help elsewhere. I tried a salon that is renowned for this particular hair stylist who is apparently a ‘genius’ at cutting curly hair. Lies. He basically jabbed at my dry hair with scissors for 20 minutes, took about 7 selfies during the cut, charged me $110 and sent me on my way. Not impressed. I then went to a good old-fashioned stylist with 20 years of experience who cut my hair like it was the 80s. Sectioning my hair with razor like precision at the crown of my head and cutting it bluntly in straight lines. The cut was fine but not spectacular so I’ve decided to try someone else.

In desperation I asked my friend Clare from Checks and Spots for her hairdresser because she has super rad curls. I’ve had good luck in the past finding hairdressers by asking people with cool hair which salon they go to and she was super sweet enough to share her hairdressers deets. I made an appointment immediately and I’ve been thinking about what to have done for the past week.

My only hesitation about getting my hair cut is that I was sort of growing my hair out but then it reaches a stage where it just looks like I’ve gone to the hairdresser and said ‘Make me look like Slash on a really bad day!‘ and I’m about 2 weeks away from that happening.

This is what my hair looks like at the moment. It’s very beige and something must be done.

So I’ve narrowed it down to a few options and I’d LOVE to hear your opinion.

When I go to the hairdresser this afternoon should I…

1. Just ask for a trim and continue growing my hair although I know it will never look like Jessa’s and I’ll have to pass through the extremely unattractive Slash phase.

2. Let the hairdresser do what she thinks is best, but leaning towards a funky shorter-ish messy cut.

3. Ask her to re-create my signature cut.

Thoughts? I need all the opinions. Otherwise I’ll get there and be all ‘Can I get a Rachel cut? You still do those right?’ Help!

I’m always happy to take a risk with hair as long as it will be a low maintenance cut. It does, after all, grow back. So I go with Option 2. But ONLY if you get a good vibe from the new hairdresser. If you don’t click with them and think they get you then option 1 all the way.

I’m the same I’m not too fussy with my hair – that’s I ended up with my signature cut to begin with!

I got past the Slash stage and had very long hair about 3 weeks ago. Then, I also did an opinion poll using this https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc3/t1/q71/1511122_387824904686137_931643148_n.jpg as my ‘Whaddya think?’ photo. I ended up with https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/t1/q71/1606833_391761050959189_1910808505_n.jpg and I LOVE it.

You look GORGEOUS! See that’s what I needed to see. Your hair is gorgeous long but it thrives when it’s short. I think you just made my decision for me. Thank you petal. x

Oh yay 🙂 Thank you! I loved my long locks but once I chopped I felt like, “Oh yeah, THIS is me.”

xx Can’t wait to see what you get! x

See how you feel when there and you start talking to the hairdresser – if it feels safe, maybe let her suggest what should happen – take all these photos!!! x

Ha! Should I show her this post with the comments and make her super nervous??? 🙂

I agree with the other commentators; see what the vibe is before committing. I loved your signature cut, though you’ll look fab no matter what.

Thanks love I just think I look fresher and more ‘me’ with something similar to my signature cut! Good call.

Oh, I feel your pain! Mine is quite long (past the bra strap and almost at the small of my back) and has a distinct wave. I will be devastated when Gianni hangs up his scissors, because he understands what I want – wash and air dry, quick brush in the morning, no product.
Echoing everyone else – you already know what your preferred look is, take some photos in, close your eyes and try to relax. You’ll look great 🙂

I’m all for option 2, providing you get a good sense of your hairdressers hair vibe. Being a fellow curly haired lass I take a pintrest page in of what I DON’T want to look like (Kyle Minogue circa 1988 anyone?). Follow it up with a couple of pics of what your own general taste leans to and your new hairdresser will have a better sense of who you are. Will look forward to a hair pic update 🙂

Oh do you have a link to your pinterest page? That sounds like a brilliant idea!

I’m sorry Lady Smaggle. Too much of a Luddite for that new fangled trickery. By so you know, my don’t board features much is Kylie from about 5 years ago & Halle Berry when she went inverted triangle short and Ri Ri when she did the same. Good luck!

  7. Hope I’m not too late to comment! But echoing other advice here – Skip option 1, your curls are so much better in a shorter cut. Go with your gut at the salon as to whether you trust a new stylist to do what they want. I’d take some sample pics of your favourite hair and compromise on options 2/3. Good luck! Can’t wait to see pics x

Not too late at all! I can’t believe HAIR ROMANCE is commenting on this post! Squeee! I’m going to show her the photos in this post! I just want choppy, funky and major volume.

I’m too late to this hair party because I live on the other side of the world. I probably wouldn’t have been much help anyway because I would have suggested that you keep heading towards that Slash look and start donning a top hat everywhere you go. Possibly leaving in the middle of weddings to smoke a cigarette and play a guitar solo as well : P

I like your hair regardless, but would think going shorter would be refreshing with the heat you’ve been experiencing over there. And, you’re right, the hair cut Regan gave you was on point!

I actually snorted out loud when you described your hair as “beige”. Yours is the raddest hair I’ve ever seen. It’s anything but boring, no matter the cut.

Ok Can I please ask what hairdresser you go to as I do love your curls & I am a Melbourne girl with curls too. I have been seeing Neel a few times at his curly hair salon but curious about other curl hairdressers as I feel he might keep sticking to the pretty same cut for me & I like my new doo but not in love with it. Also need a good curl colourist & not sure where to go??
