Guilty Pleasures

Guilty Pleasures
Carly Jacobs

Ever since I published my post called 31 things that women do when they’re alone I’ve been thinking about the perfectly sinful act of indulging ones guilty pleasures. Like eating breakfast food for dinner or watching your favourite shitty movie twice in one day. A friend of mine is a mother and her guilty pleasure is arriving at her child’s pre-school half an hour early and reading the news on her phone in the car. Mr Smaggle’s guilty pleasures are all beverage related. Like having more than 1 cafe coffee per day or drinking a 100Plus (his favourite isotonic sports drink) if he hasn’t exercised. This also made me think that my guilty pleasures are quite transient and that they tend to change every few months. Here are a few recent guilty pleasures that I’ve been indulging in.

Watching Sister Wives

It’s a show about a polygamist family escaping Utah to live in Las Vegas. I found it on Netflix not long ago and it’s the most enthralling reality TV I’ve seen since the first season of Big Brother. Literally nothing happens in the whole series after the fourth wife joins the family in the first few episodes but it just doesn’t matter. They have like 25 kids between 5 adults and it’s such a shit fight circus that I can’t look away. They’re also just lovely people. Mr Smaggle will often bust me in bed with my iPad watching it with headphones and he’ll gasp in mock shock and point at me in an accusatory manner but he just doesn’t understand the Browns. The show’s elevator pitch is ‘Love should be multiplied, not divided.’ Have I sufficiently seduced you yet?

Subscribing to the 90s radio soundtrack on Spotify

Confession: I’m a major shower singer. I like to do it in the morning. It helps relax my brain. I’ve started following the 90s radio station on Spotify and it’s just the best thing in the world. This morning for instance, Shawn Mullins‘ Lullaby came on and I was all ‘Ev-er-y thing’s gonna be alright… rockabye… ROCK-a-bye-y-eye…. rock-a-bye.’ It was a world of awesome.

Eating entire boxes of Sour Cream and Onion Delites

I’m a bit of a health nut and carbo-phobe but occasionally on a weekend, I’ll put some crap television series on and annihilate a box of Delites instead of lunch. It’s like a salt bomb exploded in my mouth every time I do it but I don’t care. It’s equal amounts of delicious and disgusting and I love it.

Morning naps

Being a freelancer who does a variety of different things everyday, sticking to a 9 to 5 schedule is almost impossible. I’ve recently taken to getting up at 6am after only a few hours sleep, heading out for a Barre class, coming home and working for a few hours and then having a nap at like 10am in the morning. It’s ridiculous… but so satisfying. Also naps are 75% more satisfying if you feel a little bit guilty about them.

Reading internet hate sites

I KNOW! It’s awful… but sometimes when I have a spare 5 minutes I’ll visit a few celebrity hate sites and be all ‘Yes! Kiera Knightly was completely insipid in every movie she’s done except for Bend It Like Beckham!’ and then I hate myself a little bit.

The hatred is all part of the journey with guilty pleasures though. If you don’t think that you’re slightly less of person because of what you just did, it doesn’t qualify as a guilty pleasure.

So what are your guilty pleasures? Any particularly recent ones you’d like to share?

Yes! I am also a massive slave to the 90’s hits on Spotify. I just can’t get enough. And those Delights crisps have stolen my heart.

My current guilty pleasure is Zoopa Doopa icy poles. I know that they’re pretty much pure sugar but I can’t help downing a couple when the weather is hot and sticky.

Oh man. You’ve totally inspired me. They’re totes going in the trolley on my next super market visit.

Waiting for the baby to go to sleep, taking the video monitor with me into the bedroom, having a cup of tea and reading the internet – ignoring the feral bowls of left over baby food and piles of washing, and unvacuumed carpet. I embrace the ‘building immunity’ theory of exposing children to not completely sanitised spaces 🙂

Oh and also Netflix – One Tree Hill, any reality show about weight loss, documentaries about Orcas gone bad (Blackfish – OMG).

And Lindt 80% dark chocolate squares with natural peanut butter sandwiched between two pieces.

Wait – I am not sure I have any non-guilty pleasures??

I LITERALLY have not stopped thinking about dark chocolate and peanut butter since you mentioned it. It sounds sinful.

Daily mail online- horrible hateful celeb sightings but also quite delicious, and nutella straight form the jar, via a soup spoon and into my mouth. “What are you eating Mum?”. “Nothing, nothing at all”….

Nutella Spoons are like my favourite food!

Hey! Hair cut photos, where are they?
I just generally feel guilty about not being able to do things, but that’s CFS, so I keep trying to NOT feel guilty and continue to ignore the dog hair piling up on the floor.

So my guilty pleasures are few and simple. Waaaaaaaaaaay too much Milo in my cup. Pinterest. Cuddling the dogs On The Couch (the couch being a forbidden zone for dogs, according to Best Beloved – they get off when they hear his car pull up).

    peopleofwallmart.com and WTFtattoos.com

I feel bad for laughing or cringing because they are real people and all. But sometimes it just makes me feel a little better about my lot in life…

I have the hugest 90’s playlist that I rock all the time… never be ashamed of the 90’s music.. lol

Fantasy novels, especially the smutty ones. I’m not proud of how much I enjoy them.. but I do.

I LOVE people of Wallmart. So sad and so awesome. Any recs on smutty fantasy novels? They sound like they’d be right up my ally!

      • Nicole 10 years ago

Katie MacAlister does some pretty good smutty fantasy books.

Ok mine are: reading Dlisted every single day. Brilliant snark and watching Idris Elba movies and tv shows. I’ve watched some truly terrible stuff just to watch him.

If you love sister wives, can I suggest Big Love, a HBO show about polygamist families…..addictive, amazing and makes me entertain the idea of a sister wife…. for about 10 mins!!!

    • Nicole 10 years ago

I will also hop on the Big Love recommendation wagon. SO good! Really great cast and constantly just pulling you along as the shit is always hitting the fan. And, a beach boys song for the opening title.

I LOVED that series! One of the seasons was a bit off but the rest was amazing. I even read a book written by one of Merril Jessops ex-wives (the real life dude that Roman Grant is based on) and when she escaped from the LDS her first job ever was sewing regulation long underwear for the characters on Big Love that live on the compound. It was RAD.

Be there girlfriend! Watched the whole series and LOVED IT! Hard. I’ve never thought having a sister wife was a good idea at all but I loved that family SO MUCH!

I gotta know: Did you have to Google Shawn Mullins name???

And going to the 10am showing of 12 Years A Slave last Tuesday was a guilty indulgence and the best thing I’ve done in ages. I came out if that theatre and was shocked that it was daylight. x

Nope! I went to school with a kid called Sean Mullins so I never forgot!

HAHA oh Sister Wives – that one is among my guilty pleasure tv shows too, which include 19 Kids and Counting, and Teen Mom. My partner sits there rolling his eyes at me the whole time I’m watching those shows and its hilarious!

I also like to google Tori Spelling, that one needs no explanation. Oh, and reading the trashiest articles on Daily Mail – that’s a big one.

Girrrrrrrl, I am so feeling you on morning naps. I love, love, love getting up early and having a nice breaky and a walk or something and then getting back into bed later. My all time fave guilty pleasure is people watching while sitting outside at a lovely cafe with a good cup of coffee. I am such a sticky beak and am super into being nosy. I cannot WAIT to get to Melbourne for a new place for people watching.
