5 of The Best Australian Food Blogs

I remember back in the day when I first started blogging, we all had blog rolls down the side bar of our websites that show cased the blogs that we read and loved. Somewhere in the midst of improved blog designs and WordPress switch overs the old blog roll disappeared. I miss the days of discovering awesome blogs this way so I thought I’d pop together a list of my favourite food blogs that I’m loving at the moment.

5 of The Best Australian Food Blogs

Not Quite Nigella

This blog is an absolute delight. It’s written by the gorgeous Lorraine, who is basically a total nutcase about food. She makes crazy things like Obama Pizzas (seriously it’s a pizza with Obama’s face on it) and Bacon Roses and she records almost every mouthful of food that she eats. She also does no-nonsense restaurant reviews that are actually honest and don’t blow smoke up the arse of the owners. Lorraine has also met Nigella Lawson. Awesome points multiplied.

What Katie Ate

katie

This is a relatively new addition to my blog reader and although Katie hasn’t updated the blog since December 2013, her photography is such gorgeous eye candy that it’s worth a thorough look back into the archives, especially through her baking section.

Spicy Ice Cream

I discovered Lisa’s Spicy Ice Cream last year as one of the finalists in the Voices 2013 blog competition and I’ve been devouring her archives ever since. She pairs easy-to-follow recipes with gorgeous photography that just makes you want to throw dinner parties and eat outside every night.

Simple Provisions

I can’t remember how I found Simple Provisions but it’s such a delight to have in my blog reader. Her recipes are slightly healthier than the average food blog which is a huge draw card for me, with many of her main meals being protein and vegetable based. I also love her slightly darker photography. Lots of food blogs have a false summer feel about them but Amelia’s just makes me feel all warm and snuggly.

My Darling Lemon Thyme

I first heard of My Darling Lemon Thyme at Problogger last year and through the name alone, I knew it would be my kind of blog. Emma is a professional chef from New Zealand who now lives in Perth and blogs about gluten and lactose free cooking because her family (much like mine) are allergic to everything. What I love most about Emma’s blog is that although it’s technically an allergy cooking blog, you don’t really notice because she is a wizard in the kitchen and her photography is stunning. Fun fact I Learned from Emma: In New Zealand a tablespoon is 15ml but in Australia it’s 20ml. Mental.

Just food blogs? Smitten Kitchen and Recipe Rifle, as they sort of align with my own preferences, plus they go off at entertaining tangents. Other blogs include(bearing in mind I’m on the work pc, so diversionary sites are not bookmarked!) Backwards in High Heels, Smaggle, Bourbon and Pearls, Styling You, Woogsworld, Already Pretty, Wardrobe Oxygen, Apartment Therapy, Amid Privilege, Tom Degan and Belgian Waffling.

No worries at all, thanks for stopping by! I told my NZ bestie that she was so relieved. She thought she was going crazy putting sugar in her tea… a teaspoon seemed like heaps more here! x

Excellent collection of food blogs! I read all of these from time to time but particularly love My Darling Lemon Thyme – such amazing photos and so vegetarian friendly. Plus, I’m a kiwi too, so y’know, we have to stick together (or something like that!)

That tablespoon thing is bonkers! It’s the same difference between US and Australian tablespoons. I’ll have to remember it if I pick up any Aussie cookbooks. I didn’t have to think about it there because it’s all I knew, but if I’m using US utensils, I could be buggered.

I’ve read a little of Not Quite Nigella’s blog. I really enjoyed her posts on traveling in the US as there was recognition both from knowing some of the places well and being an Aussie in America. And of course her usual stuff (like reading other Aussie blogs) is a nice tie back for me.
Will definitely check out the others.
