The 2014 Mother’s Day Gift Guide For Fussy Mums

The 2014 Mother’s Day Gift Guide For Fussy Mums
Carly Jacobs

If your mother is anything like mine, you’ll know better than to get her a shit present for mother’s day. When I was seven years old, I gave her a purple grape-shaped sponge from The Body Shop and she’s never let me live it down. I don’t quite know what she was expecting from her primary school aged daughter but The Purple Grape sponge was clearly the lowest point of her gift receiving life. So, in order for you to maintain a decent gift history with your own mother, I’ve been cruising around Etsy to find a few fail safe bits and pieces that most mothers will love… even mine, the fussy wench.

The 2014 Mother’s Day Gift Guide For Fussy Mums

mothersday

 1. Cotton Candy scarf from Rannka 2. Rose Garden lip gloss from Painted Lips 3. Pink Furniture Print cushion from Chocolate Creative 4. Pink Leather Wallet from Gift Shop Brooklyn 5. If your mum isn’t really into gifts why not give her an experience instead?

Try…

* A voucher for a manicure or pedicure?

* An afternoon movie date with choc tops?

* Take her out for high tea with champagne?

* Give her tickets to a local theatre show?

* Cook her dinner and make a very fancy dessert?

* Visit her at work with a coffee and some fancy pastries?

What are you getting your mum for mother’s day this year? If we all share our suggestions we’re all bound to find the perfect gift!

I love the idea of taking her to a movie with choc tops. I am going to shamelessly steal this idea, particularly as I profit from the exercise too! Maybe I’ll take my Nan as well. The baby can stay at home though as she is really crap at staying quiet and always has an opinion she wants to share, generally loudly.

It’s the perfect date and it costs about $20 to $30 which is what I’d spend on a gift anyway!

Those slippers are just gorgeous. Bad luck Mum, I am buying them for myself!

I know right? How cute are they?

I relented and bought them for Mum. She is going to love them. But now you have got me hooked on Etsy – bad, very bad!

Hehe my mother is a notorious regifter so I used to buy her things with her name on them so she couldn’t give them away. I thought that she had stopped but the other day she handed me a Swarovski keyring and asked me if I had given it to her. She was going to give it away not knowing that it had an initial engraved on it! 😉

Holy shit that’s hilarious! I used to be a re-gifter but only casually. Like when I was a teacher I’d get heaps of boxes of chocolates and I’d take them to friend’s houses so I wouldn’t eat them all myself.

I actually LOLed at the grape sponge. I totally would have given my Mum that.
My sister and I got Mum one of those super useful foot spas once when we were kids. I believe I saw her use it once, the day we gave it to her.

I thought it was a great idea. I was 7. Anything purple was obviously an amazing gift. Ah! The foot spas! My mother would have KILLED me if I bought her one of those!

I have never had much luck getting my mum presents, and was never so hurt as when I realised that she’d left some things I gave her behind when she moved out of the family home.
Since my parents divorced, she’s living in a nice little apartment, which doesn’t have much room for ‘stuff’. So now I do exactly as you suggest, and go for an experience instead of things. This year, my mother is getting two movie tickets (which I purchased through an organisation I’m a member with, so I got them for a discount) and a generous voucher for a nearby, well-known and delicious cafe. I’m pretty happy with that, because I know she’ll use it, and it will give her a treat.

I’m thinking this year I’ll take my mum out for afternoon or cocktails when she comes to Melbourne. My parents built their dream home a few years ago and it’s very carefully decorated so I wouldn’t dare buy her anything for her house. I do get her fancy candles every now and then and she’s getting a framed photo from Smaggle too.

Can I please adopt you quickly … like by Sunday? This list has all the things and I’m very much up for an experience … with maybe the spotted scarf as well 😉

help me please ladies. my mum I think is the fussiest ever!!! she is diabetic and on a strict diet so she doesnt appreciate food. ie meals in or out. so therefore wont eat chocolate. she doesn’t like flowers. Thinks handmade gifts are tacky. Thinks vouchers are thoughtless and would be offended with ornaments etc as she believes she shouldnt have somrthing as a gift if its purpose is for the home. im planning a photo shoot for myself, kids, sisters and their kids so she can have us all in a frame but I would also like to do something else really special any ideas please? ? laura xx
