How to look amazing after a work out

How to look amazing after a work out
Carly Jacobs

The worst thing about working out every day is how bloody long it takes for your appearance to recover afterwards. Personally, I’m red faced and sweaty for at least an hour or two after I’ve finished my workout which is super attractive when I’m sitting opposite a client in a meeting with half my make up melting off my face. Exercise is not negotiable for me, so I’ve come up with a few tricks to make me look less gross in a rush after a workout.

Have a dry shower

If you don’t have time for a full shower lather up, just go with the dry shower option. A quick wipe of your stinky bits with a few baby wipes will tide you over until you have time for a full wash.

Go light on the make up

Make-Up BorderDon’t bother with a full face of slap. Go for a tinted moisturiser or a redness fighting BB cream. Then dust your face with a little bit of powder to fight the post work out shine. If you must conceal, do it lightly as concelear doesn’t like sweaty skin and tends to slide around your face. Skip the full smokey eye and go with two quick coats of a no fuss mascara. Pop on a tinted lipgloss and you’re fresh-faced and good to go.

Don’t forget your deodorant

A quick spritz of antiperspirant deodorant and a dab of your favourite perfume will have you smelling shower fresh in no time.

Go fuss free with your hair

Give the roots of your hair a quick blast with a hairdryer if you got super sweaty otherwise just spray the roots with dry shampoo and brush your hair into a pony tail. If you have curly hair just give your mane a spritz of dry shampoo and a quick shake and you’re good to go. Alternatively a messy bun is a good post workout option for my curly haired sisters.

Keep a separate beauty kit in your gym bag

There is nothing more frustrating than forgetting your hair brush or deodorant when you go to the gym. Buy two of everything and keep them in a separate make up case and leave it in your gym bag, that way you’ll always have everything you need after your workout.

Lower your standards slightly

You’re never going to look like you’ve just walked out of the hairdresser when you’ve just spent an hour at the gym, so get over it. No one will notice your slightly greasy roots or flushed cheeks. Honestly, the only thing they will notice is your firm butt and that gorgeous exercise glow.

Are you a gym go-er? What are your tips for looking less like a cave creature after your workout?

Great tips Ms Smags – some of which I use every day not just gym days (eg BB cream and a light touch on everything!). I try to fit my workouts in first thing and fully get the red and sweaty thing… but it’s good for me in the end so it’s worth the little frustrations. One thing I find helps with the sweaty hair issue (I’m not curly like you but have that weird semi-wavy thing going on) is to put a curl spray or styling cream in my hair BEFORE I work out, twist it into a loose bun and use a hairband/sweatband to keep sweat out of my face as much as possible. Then after my shower I just hit my hair with a quick blast from the hair dryer and loosen it out; it gives a nice wavy effect that I can leave as is or put into a ponytail or loose bun as you suggest 🙂

I’m pretty lucky because my hair looks great when it’s dirty so I just give it a quick blow dry and I’m good to go. But oh my lord the FACE! I get so ruddy and red. I tend to workout, get dressed, wait half on hour, then do my make up, other wise it slides off my face.

Solid tips. Two makeup bags is a great one, I’ve forgotten stuff before and it SUCKS! (Even though probably no one except me notices my lack of mascara)

I freaking HATE forgetting anything in my gym bag. I have 2 deodorants in there, I just cannot forget that stuff!

Yes, I like the one tip where you need to be realistic and lower your standards. Do I stink? No. Great.

That’s my biggest one, is that deep down, I’m just not that vain. I have a friend who only exercises once a week on blow dry day. I just can’t even with that.

I’m an extremely heavy sweater and I tend to go pretty hard while exercising, plus I’m a naturally flushy person so I look and smell unbelievably disgusting post gym. I organise my day so I can shower immediately otherwise the results are just offensive. I won’t even go to the shops after the gym.

You’re spot on. Immediately after working out I blow dry my hair on the cool setting to dry up the sweat, and to prevent oils from traveling down my hair shaft. I then apply dry shampoo. The secret to dry shampoo is to leave it on for 3+ mins. I then scruff/brush it out and either put it up in a messy bun, or leave it down and tousled.

Favourite tip: Lower your standards! Brilliant! So many girls won’t try hard in fear of getting a little sweat on their brows…honestly! I’m a fan of wet wipes too if I’m going sans shower after a workout either that or a DRENCHING of Gucci..masking all signs of my sweat! Ewwww
