If You Were On Death Row What Would Your Last Meal Be?

If You Were On Death Row What Would Your Last Meal Be?
Carly Jacobs

Do you have a weird thing that you’re into? Something that you feel a bit weird telling other people about? It might be your penchant for watching international beauty pageants, your weekend habit of attending Renaissance Fairs or maybe you like to watch Hitler documentaries. Me? My weird thing is that I like to read about serial killers. It’s creepy but it’s true. I don’t like drug crimes or gang wars. I want weird dudes who cut up other dudes and kept their severed ears in pickle jars on their bookshelves. The kind of guy who worked at the post office but no one ever suspected anything except that he was always a ‘bit weird’. There’s no need to panic though as I’m extremely unlikely to go down the murder path. Dead things freak me out.

So anyway, a few months ago I stumbled across the work of Henry Hargreaves, a photographer and artist who came up with the genius work No Seconds. He recreated and photographed a series of last meals from prisoners on death row. Being the deranged little semi-psychopath that I am, I lapped it up. Here are a few of my favourites.

I found the entire series utterly fascinating.

I mean think about it… what would you actually have for your last meal? It’s such a huge decision considering you can literally pick anything at all in the world.

I would have…

• A crunchy tuna sushi roll

• A piece of inari sushi

• Lasagne

• A few crispy hot chips with mayonnaise

• A whole bottle of Pepper Jack shiraz

• Cookies and cream, salted caramel and choc chip ice cream

• A coconut Whitakkers

• Strawberries with sweet deli yogurt

• A cup of chai tea

When I took the time to really think about it, my choices surprised me. Especially the lasagne. I hardly EVER eat lasagne because holy carbs and calories Batman that stuff is bad for you but when you’re on death row, who gives a crap? I admit it’s also a rather large meal but I figure if there’s one point in my life where it’s totally acceptable to eat my feelings, it should be when I’m on death row.

So tell me… if you were on death row what would your last meal be?

I really liked No Seconds too, creepy but fascinating things are the best. I think my last meal would be a giant bowl of my homemade carbonara, combines all my food loves carbs, bacon, mushrooms, garlic and cheese haha. And maybe strawberry cheesecake to finish.

That is the best response ever. You want to cook your own last meal. Adorable.

Chips, as in hot chips, with aioli
    a protein of some description
    oysters with shallot vinaigrette
    Laduree vanilla macarons
Connoisseur salted caramel and macadamia chocolate coated paddle pop thingy (I had one at Rocky Horror show on Sunday. It’s the shizz)
    Boquerones
some cheese with truffle bits in it
    all the wines

I highly approve of your last meal choices. Anything salted caramel. Always.

Oh I’m oddly fascinated by killers too! I think I get it from my mum – if ever a serial killer started up in our small home town I know who I’d be looking at…

In terms of last meal…I think too many favouritest foods to choose from! But it would definitely be unhealthy and super indulgent.

I’m actually really weird about it. My cousin and I have the same weird book fetishes. We love serial killers, kids that grew up in cults and women who have been held captive like Jaycee Duggard. Our families think we’re really weird so we sneakily swap books at family gatherings.

      • Tahlia Meredith 10 years ago

Dude, I’d like to borrow all of those books pleasekthanks 😉

A zinger burger with no mayo
    half a bbq’ed lobster
    a pork bun
a bottle of Cloudy Bay Sav Blanc
    A bottle of vodka
    3 xanax

A Zinger burger? Really? I don’t believe I’ve ever had one and now I feel like I have to. Apart from the Zinger burger, thislist does not surprise me at all. x

  5. Start me off with a massive antipasto platter – I want salami, arancini balls, oysters, the works!
Then I want a chicken schnitzel with hot chips and mushroom sauce (on the side, thanks).
    A bottle of Veuve Clicquot.
And finish me off with a chocolate fondant for dessert.
But obviously I’d be finished off with a lethal injection.

I always have antipasto regret… but I guess that wouldn’t matter much if I’m on death row would it? 🙂

I like to read about serial killers too! I’m fascinated by them. Their brains. I could read about them for days.

My last meal would be …

    Tortellini with creamy mushroom sauce
    Bread and butter pudding
    Chips and gravy
    Apple juice

    So, health food.

I’ve been obssessed with serial killers for as long as I can remember. When I was in year 9 the year 12 psych students went to Tasmania and actually got to talk to Martin Bryant. How crazy is that? Apparently he’s really obese now (then) and likes to play cards. Which again is so fascinating.

The responses to this have been THE BEST! Apple juice? For your last ever beverage? That’s so fascinating.

Start with oysters, some cheese and olives. Then lobster mac and cheese and a bottle of Dom Perignon. What? I’ve never had it before and I definitely don’t want to miss that opportunity.

I’ve had Dom Perignon before but it was in the US. I drink anything with alcohol in it so fancy champers, although I love it and deeply appreciate it, is not a massive priority for me. 🙂

I SERIOUSLY THINK ABOUT THIS ALL THE TIME. This is why we are friends. I’d have:

Green chicken curry cooked to PERFECTION with white rice
    Bottle of Wolfblass
Ben and Jerrys chocolate ice cream cone with sprinkles

How’s Timothy McVeighs mint choc chip? What a pussy.

I know I looked at that I was like dude… are you twelve? Your choices are perfect. Including the heroin. x

    • mummy2v 10 years ago

Hmm the mint choc chip guy really stood out… but more for the murder of 168 people than the icecream.

… if Mrs Woog gets Xanax then I get to have heroin it’s only fair.

just thinking about it is playing around with my psyche!
food is another thing … I would want a whole large lobster in medallions with a little lemon
can you sit and savour for a bit? even though I’m not drinking now I would have to have a champagne maybe the whole bottle dom perignon is ok!
then a sticky date pudding with melting icecream
then a block of dark lindt chocolate with chilli … that’s enough of that! lol m:)X
    I don’t think I’d be laughing omg!

Chilli chocolate? Wow. You’d have to pay me to eat that in real life. 🙂

I think about this all the time, not because I plan to turn into a serial killer, but because I love all food and the thought of having narrow it down to a last supper is just too hard to bear! II think I’d have some kind of bizarre degustation of most of my favourite foods. That would be dumplings, a bowl of chicken soup with kneidlach (Jewish dumplings,) some felafel, a bowl of custard, some New York cheesecake, a couple of pieces of fudge and some bread pudding to finish it all off. Of course, my last supper would be sweet (like me!) and it wouldn’t matter if I felt sick as a dog, because I’d be able to slip straight into my food coma and never have to wake up.

I need to hear a lot more about Jewish dumplings. Do you make them? Or buy them? I’m a dumpling whore and I need to try these.

      • Sammie 10 years ago

Well, they’re called kneidlach, here is my auntie’s best recipe, http://www.theannoyedthyroid.com/2011/10/26/kneidlach/ or you can make them from a packet mix which you can find in the kosher aisle of the supermarket. They have a high nom factor and are best served in a chicken soup (recipe also on my blog) with some thin egg noodles. I too love dumplings as much as life itself and although these aren’t anything like dim sum type dumplings, they’re totally darn delicious all the same. If I had to eat one food for the rest of my life, I would definitely choose dumplings, how about you?

So just a meat and three veg situation for you? I love the simplicity of that. x

  13. Christie 10 years ago

Oh gosh, I’d have so many things. But it would include pad thai, spaghetti bolognese, butterscotch self saucing pudding, salt and vinegar chips with onion dip, and copies amounts of red wine. Accompanied by lots of cheese!

Salt and vinegar chips with onion dip! I need to try that immediately.

      • Cilla 10 years ago

I am with you sheilas on the SnV chips with onion dip. I don’t know why I haven’t tried that before but I must rectify that.

  14. mummy2v 10 years ago

Feeling like a total failure right now. I seriously have NO idea what I would choose as my last meal!! This coming from a woman who loves food and the body to prove it…. could pregnancy be messing with my head?! This whole last meal thing will keep me up all night! Ha.

It’s so much pressure isn’t it? It’s like if you choose now and you end up on death row, you can’t change your mind.

My friends and I did a dinner party recently (after I saw these pics on another blog)where we each emailed our last meal choice to the host – he then mixed them up and sent them out to other diners.. So we each had to make someone’s last meal. We all then had to guess who made and who chose what… It was great fun and such a mix of last meals. Some were very specific (including brands of condiments and size ingredients needed to be cut), others really broad (chocolate, cheese and caviar together). I had to make someone her mum’s apricot chicken and Ben and Jerry’s ice cream! And I got what ordered….. A huge giant chopp salad (with bacon, blue cheese, avo, bacon, chicken, lettuce, dried cranberries), Kraft Mac and cheese, and honey joys. It was such a great night!!

Holy shit, that sounds AMAZING!!! How cool would it be to host one night a month where everyone eats one persons last meal? That would be heaps of fun.

  16. Anna.K 10 years ago

This is actually something I have thought long and hard about! I’m having an operation next month and because I am super morbid (and because I won’t be able to eat solids for a week or two after) I’ve been trying to come up with my own “last meal” to have the night before. Just in case.
    I’ll be having:
    Deep fried mozzarella sticks
    KFC original recipe chicken
    Pad Thai
3 stacks of pancakes with strawberries and ice cream
    4 Maccas cheeseburgers
Butter chicken with a side of naan
    Peanut butter milkshake

I am also obsessed with serial killers. And cults.

Also that’s deliciously morbid having a just in case meal. Love it.

Lobster with copious amounts of melted butter, steak au poivre, fresh rolls, fresh blueberries with brown sugar and sour cream, bananas foster, and chocolate peanut butter ice cream. Oh and some icy cold milk and Oreos. And then I would spend my last minutes on earth ridiculously nauseous.

    • Author
      Carly Jacobs 10 years ago

Bananas foster? I love this game. Bananas are like punishment food for me.

  18. Caz 10 years ago

I’d have a *really* hard time narrowing it down. mmmm mac & cheese, spaghetti & meatballs, pad thai (clearly I love noodles)….

But if I had to pick I think it’d be oysters with a champagne mignonette to start, rare steak, steamed asparagus & mashed potatoes for main, and traditional chocolate cake with chocolate icing for dessert. Plus some fabulous wine. And maybe lobster.

    • Caz 10 years ago

Oh, also I don’t have a huge thing with serial killers -but drug dealers/smugglers/users any of that stuff fascinates me.

Have you watched Banged Up Abroad? It would be RIGHT up your ally. It’s just simple stories of not particularly famous drug smugglers ending up in prisons. It’s awesome.

Katsu Don from O’Bento with Naan on the side. And a Terry’s dark chocolate orange. Sadly, I think anxiety would have me puking.

  21. musicoholic 10 years ago

OMG – this is too hhhhaaaaaaarrrrrrddddd!!!!!! SO many things to choose from!!!! But, I guess, if it’s my last meal – I can eat all I want (is there a time limit for eating?) and someone else gets to clean up the devastating aftermath, right?

Soooo…. Having lived in Thailand for a few years, I’d HAVE to have:
    – chicken larb and somtam with sticky rice
    – BBQ chicken and the chilli sauce (but ONLY from the gutter-cook that was just down the road from my house)
    – yum woon sen (spicy noodle salad with pork mince, calamari, prawns…)
    – tom yum goong
    – tom kha gai
    – spicy beef salad
    – mango and sticky rice
    – banana pancake/omelette thingy with condensed milk

And then, having Indian heritage, I’d have to add:
    – beef vindaloo with basmati
    – chicken biryani
    – dahl
    – gulab jamun
    – kulfi
    – sharbat gulab… or falooda (hey, I’m not going to be fussy… 😉 )

Then to finish it up, I’d have to have some of my Nan’s golden syrup tart (which she never did give me the recipe for… sigh) with whipped cream. Or salted caramel cheesecake. Both?

I’m feeling a little like this fellow just reading this now…
