5 Weekday Breakfasts To Go (…and under 300 Calories each!)

5 Weekday Breakfasts To Go (…and under 300 Calories each!)

I

’m a big advocate of breakfast eating but whenever I discuss this with friends I’m in the minority. Lots of people don’t like to eat breakfast or simply don’t have the time to prepare it or eat it in the mornings. After watching a friend spend $6 on two slices of dry multigrain toast at a very basic cafe near her work, I decided to pop together a few breakfasts to go for those busy little bees who need to eat on the run. All of these breakfasts are easy to prepare, transportable and under 300 calories. Most of these meals take just a few minutes of preparation the night before and it’s so worth it to invest that time so you have something decent in your stomach when you start the work day… and also so you don’t have to mortgage your house after spending a fortune on unappetising cafe toast with a 1000% mark up.

1. Banana Protein Smoothie

1 banana

2 scoops of protein powder

1 handful of spinach

250 mls unsweetened almond milk

A handful of strawberries

Ice

CALORIES

Throw all ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth. Pop it into a travel mug and have it with a container of fresh strawberries.

2. Bircher Muesli

½ cup macro rolled oats

¼ cup apple juice

1 tablespoon of toasted slivered almonds

2 tablespoons of low fat Greek yogurt

1 teaspoon of lime juice

1 teaspoon of macro honey

Small handful of mixed berries

Small grated apple

CALORIES

Simply pop your oats and apple juice in a jar in the fridge over night. In the morning add grated apple, almonds, yogurt, lime juice, honey and berries and mix it all up. Then pop it in your bag and eat it when you get to work.

3. PB Banana Coconut Muffins and Yogurt

1/2 cup of coconut flour

2.5 tablespoons of raw sugar

1 cup of macro peanut butter

3 eggs

¾ teaspoon of baking soda

2 to 3 large mashed bananas

1/3 cup of almond milk

1/2 teaspoon of vanilla bean paste

In a large mixing bowl combine coconut flour, sugar, and baking soda.

After mixing the dry ingredients together add in the mashed banana, almond milk, vanilla extract, and peanut butter. Completely combine all ingredients.

Half fill 12 muffins tins with mixture. Bake the muffins at 175 degrees for 20 minutes. Bake until muffin tops are golden or a cake tester comes out cleanly.

CALORIES

Pre-make these muffins and store them in an air tight container and then simply grab one on the way out the door and devour with a pot of natural unsweetened yogurt.

(Muffin recipe adapted from Taralyn’s banana muffin recipe)

4. Porridge and Banana

1/3 cup of macro oats

¾ cup of skim milk

1 banana

1 teaspoon brown sugar

I always try to make the time to eat a proper breakfast either at home or at work but for those occasional days when I have a 7.30am meeting or I have a morning gym session, these transportation friendly breakfasts-to-go are total life savers.

If I’m super desperate, even just a banana first thing in the morning or a small handful of trail mix is so much better than starting my day without any fuel in my tank.

Also poppets, this is also the finale to my Woolworths macro and gluten-free series and to celebrate I’m giving away a $100 Woolworths voucher to one lucky reader in Australia.

All you have to do to enter is answer this question in comments…

What did you have for breakfast this morning?

Easy peasy! If you can tell a funny story that goes with your breakfast, well that’s even better.

Yum! Lots of great ideas 🙂

We recently invested in a Nutri-Bullet (surprisingly good!) so I’ve become a fan of a green smoothie for breakfast – kale or spinach, a banana, cinnamon, maybe chia seeds and almond milk. The first few times I carried around a muesli bar in case it wasn’t enough but they actually get me through to lunch, win!

We live in a block of apartments so sometimes I feel self-conscious about blending too early. Those days it’s a bit of Carmen’s muesli (the green one’s my favourite), some yoghurt and some frozen raspberries to go. By the time I get to work the raspbs and yoghurt have softened the muesli a bit so it’s nice and chewy, mmmm.

I never feel self conscious about blending early. I’m like whatever mofos! I do love Carmen’s their gluten free cereal is AMAZING!

    • Nicole (@dorkabrain) 10 years ago

I’ve had a Nutri-bullet for a few months and I can honestly say it’s been one of the best things I’ve done for my health ever. So easy too. I hear you on the blending. We’re staying in a long-stay hotel right now and I brought the blender with me (best decision), but I worry I’ll get other angry hotel guests bashing on my door if I do it at a weird time of day.

Stuff em! It’s like 3 minutes. I honestly can’t live without a blender I use it every day.

      • Tahlia Meredith 10 years ago

At least they’re quieter than most other blenders – I like to think that helps! Maybe we just need to adopt Carly’s attitude about it 🙂

  2. Celeste Langridge 10 years ago

This morning was a berry and protein smoothie. But tomorrow I’m definitely going to try your yummy muffins! I also love the Bircher muesli idea. I often make overnight oats in a jar for brekky on the go. Now I can mix it up a bit! ????

The muffins are AMAZING! So dense and proteiny and filling without all that pesky flour like in other muffins! I’m a smoothie fiend but they’re hard to drink in winter.

Your brother reckons he’s not hungry when he leaves for work so he needs something portable. I was making him smoothies, but then I broke the blender jug. Whoops! Thanks for the new ideas! I’ll guinea pig him. X

Please do! And he’s lying. He’s always hungry. He just wants to eat takeaway for brekkie! x

I didn’t even think about that! good for men on the fast diet… women might need slightly smaller portions. I’m doing the fast diet too!!! Just finished my 4th fast day. 🙂

Today I kind of messed up breakfast because I got distracted by washing dishes and cooked the oatmeal too long. 🙁

My emergency breakfast is instant oatmeal at work, I have a box of packets in the backseat of my car which can lead to some interesting conversations when I give friends a ride someplace.

Sidenote: I do eat other things for breakfast sometimes (avacado toast, frozen waffles, egg in a hole), it’s just been a very oatmeal-y week.

    • Author
      Carly Jacobs 10 years ago

I love the packets of instant oatmeal. Uncle Toby’s have a brown sugar flavoured one that I love! It HAS been an oatmeally week… so freaking cold!

  7. Alicia 10 years ago

This morning I had avocado on 2 cruskits with SnP squeeze of lemon juice & a soft boiled egg!! Yum on the mornings I work I love uncle Toby’s porridge individule portions I can quickly make it & eat at my desk! With 3 little boys I’m too worried about them eating their breakfast to eat mine & I enjoy eating in peace hehe

I love the little sachets they are so good! I love the line that’s drawn on them that you can use to measure milk in the morning. I swear if avos weren’t $4 in Melbourne, I’d have one every day.

  8. Karli 10 years ago

Today I had peanut butter and grandma’s guava jelly on white toast. It was so damn glorious. I am planning to get back in to “normal” eating eventually via Lorna Jane’s new Nourish book. The granola is A+!! Thanks for the overnight oats recipe. That’ll be good for back to school!

  9. Liz @ I Spy Plum Pie 10 years ago

I don’t understand how people can go without breakfast – I eat dinner early (such a nanna) so I wake up hungry at like 6am! Given how cold it’s been I’m all about quinoa porridge at the moment, but in warmer weather it’s smoothies most mornings, or homemade chia-pudding with granola and yoghurt if I’m on the go. Man I love breakfast.

I cannot do anything except exercise without eating and I only do that because my stomach goes all gunk if I eat beforehand. How are people not hungry in the morning??? How? My mate that I mentioned the article eats breakfast at work and I’m like ‘How do you drive the car on an empty stomach?’.

  10. Nicole (@dorkabrain) 10 years ago

Obviously, I’m not trying for the Woolies voucher. I just wanted to add that I think if people are resorting to toast grabbing at a cafe, that some of these might still be too much work for them. And for those people I have two words, Quest Bars. They have 20 grams of protein, heaps of fibre, hardly any sugar, and are about 170 calories. Also, the Chocolate Brownie flavour tastes like Space Food Sticks.
Or there’s always what my husband does. Has a greek yoghurt and uses Belvita biscuits as a spoon.

    • Author
      Carly Jacobs 10 years ago

I actually think that if some people can’t spend 1 minute chucking some cereal in a tupperware container and grabbing a yogurt they’re not using their time right. Waiting for someone else to cook toast at a cafe takes so much longer and is so much more expensive. It’s honestly a matter of laziness most of the time – cereal, oats and smoothies take a couple of minutes max to make.

I’m not sure that we have Quest Bars here… I’ll have to keep an eye out. I know we have Belvitas and putting them in yogurt is a great idea!

  11. Kelly 10 years ago

I was lucky this morning as my hubs is on holidays while the kids are so I had scrambled eggs with baby spinach & mushrooms cooked for me. So yum. Could be sooo easy to get used to!!
At my old job I used to start at 5am and when it was freezing I used to make a huge pot of chunky vege soup with chickpeas or barley and I would take that in for my breakfast. Sounds weird and a bit strange, but heaps of other cultures start the day with soup for brekkie….that was my justification anyway!!
I would probably die, if I didn’t eat breakfast. Or I would become very very hangry (Where you become both hungry and angry at the same time)

  12. elliescarf 10 years ago

Urrr… I had some pikelet leftovers. In my defence the baby had a code brown poonami when I was considering virtuous options like a green smoothie with activated almonds, or fruit loops.

    • Author
      Carly Jacobs 10 years ago

Brown code poonami? I think that’s my new favourite thing in the world. Well obviously not the actual poonami. Should have gone fruit loops. Day old pikelets are not very yummy.

    • JessB 10 years ago

“Code brown poonami” is the best phrase ever for that particular event. I laughed and laughed at that, elliescarf.

  13. Ooh I love these suggestions – thank you! I had what we usually have on a weekday: grainy toast with avocado and tomato. Oh and a fabulous coffee from my handsome personal barista. Win!

    • Author
      Carly Jacobs 10 years ago

Oh yum! Avocados in Melbourne are gross and cost like $4. I’m gutted that I can’t have them every day. Also my personal barista is always asleep in the morning… so I’m his personal barista.

  14. Hayley 10 years ago

I cooked scrambled eggs, hashbrowns and avocado on toast. Teaching my 11 year old sister my way to do eggs as she thinks they’re awesome!

Oh cute! I love that. Every family has an egg legacy. My dad does the best toad in the holes.

  15. Chelsea Sutherland 10 years ago

Sadly not the PB Muffins but am going to go to Woolies after I feed the dog / before I feed myself and get a few supplies for those. I had a banana before the gym and then oats & yoghurt afterwards but I am SO OVER that breakfast. I don’t like eggs which complicates trying to lead a bit of a clean (ish) eating lifestyle and I’m struggling to want healthy food during winter so those muffins are a great way for me to be “naughty but not”.

    • Author
      Carly Jacobs 10 years ago

The muffins are so great and you can zap them in the oven to make them all warm and delicious!

Today I had museli – again! I confess… I actually eat it every day. It’s super easy to make, and the batch lasts me about 3 or 4 weeks having 1/2 a cup each day.

    Here’s the recipe!

    Homemade Muesli

    4 x cups oats
    1 x cup sunflower seeds
    1/2 x cup pumpkin seeds
    1 x cup sesame seeds
    1/2 x cup spelt flour
    1 x tablespoon cinnamon.

If you want to add your favorite around 1 cup chopped finely.

Mix all dry ingredients in a large bowl

    In a separate bowl combine
    1/2 cup sunflower Oli
    1/2 cup honey

Add wet & dry ingredients together
Spread out on two backing trays lined with baking paper
Cook at 150 for 15-20 min

    Cool

Add dry fruits at this point if you wish

Serve with vanilla yoghurt and fresh berries.

Mr Smags LOVES his muesli but it’s hard to find gluten free oats! 🙁

      • Nicole (@dorkabrain) 10 years ago

If you’re willing to go online, I know of a couple Australian sites that have them.

We buy Freedom Foods GF oats from Woolies (our Coles stopped stocking the plain oats, but they still stock a heap of other Freedom products). 🙂

Breakfast is my biggest meal of the day. I just can’t imagine how anyone can go without it. Monday to Friday I have the same thing – 2 hard boiled egg whites, porridge made with almond milk and some fruit on top, and a coffee. Weekends sometimes get omelettes or scrambled eggs with spinach or gluten free banana muffins but I just couldn’t function without breakfast

    • Author
      Carly Jacobs 10 years ago

You have porridge AND eggs for breakfast? Consider my mind officially blown. You’re a genius.

  20. Nicole 10 years ago

I am a big fan of the brown sludge smoothie- the less cool, distinctly unattractive, poor cousin version of the green. I have a few problems with my smoothies:
    a) a really old dodgy blender that requires regular shaking and pushing down to get it to actually blend the contents. It does however give me an arm workout (I used to work as a bartender, trust me, it exercises the same muscles).
    b) as it turns out red berries+green kale= brown sludge
    c) my original formula (fruit, greens, almond milk) didn’t fill me up long enough so I started adding oats. Great if I remember to pre-soak but I never remember. Add in dodgy blender and my smoothie is brown AND chunky. Mmmm

I posted a pic on Facebook and called it a sewerage smoothie but a friendly enlightened me that sewerage is often more liquidy and contains clumps of hair. Something to work towards.

Also, I drink it when I get to work and have to time my trip to the kitchen to rinse my cup when no one is around to avoid comment. The best one? “Gee, if you don’t live forever after drinking that, you’re gonna be pissed off!”

    • Author
      Carly Jacobs 10 years ago

Oh honey you’ve got to get a good blender. Stat. Don’t be putting up with that crap it will change your life! That comment is the best. Love it. I often put a handful of spinach in my milky protein smoothies. I don’t even notice and it gives me an extra veggie hit.

    • Tahlia Meredith 10 years ago

Hahaha true! Especially blueberries I’ve found, they make a distinctly UNattractive colour. The weird thing is though if you leave it in the fridge overnight it goes greener again. You definitely need to investigate a blender update as soon as you can!

      • Author
        Carly Jacobs 10 years ago

I actually just updated my blender. I bought a food processor and blender in one. It’s awesome so far… I need to actually explore it’s functions more. I’ve literally only used it as a blender so far!

  21. Emma Rowland 10 years ago

I’m afraid it was an optifast shake for me this morning (207 calories) – but I’m definitely going back on the Bircher muesli when I’m finished this diet! For winter, my other favourite is steel-cut oats cooked overnight in my slow cooker. Just chuck a cup of oats in with four cups of water and a little honey or dried fruit – whack it on overnight and you have comforting warm oats to wake up to 🙂

    • Author
      Carly Jacobs 10 years ago

Oh how’s the optifast going? I’ve done it a few times and I end up a little… blocked up for lack of a better word! I don’t mind it though… I’m doing the 5:2 at the moment and it’s pretty bloody good. I’m also not drinking which helps!

      • Emma Rowland 10 years ago

It’s working for me, but Metamucil is a must! Going off booze has helped me enormously too.

  22. Amy 10 years ago

I try to eat healthy for breakfast but some days it’s just not happening. During the week it’s either sourdough toast x 2 pieces -one with Vegemite and one with berry jam. Else it’s porridge with banana and brown sugar or berries and yoghurt. Weekends it’s most likely poached eggs (runny) on toast then fruit.

    • Author
      Carly Jacobs 10 years ago

Mr Smaggle just bought a Sous Vide and he’s learning how to poach eggs in it. I freaking love eggs. I have them on protein toast! Yum!

  23. Mel @ Formed Design Co 10 years ago

I’m a reformed non-breakfast eater. Every single morning now I generally have two fresh eggs scrambled with a dash of full cream milk. They keep me full until 10.30/11am-ish. If I miss brekkie, I’m ravenous by 9.30 and usually eat something shit that’s only temporarily satisfying! So I’m with you, eat breakfast people!!

  24. dove 10 years ago

I had miso soup, fish, konju noodles and spinach. Not feeling well and it’s the best brekkie.

    • Author
      Carly Jacobs 10 years ago

Oh wow this reminds of when I lived with my mate and she’s half Japanese and whenever we were hungover she’d make us miso soup and rice and coola lime cordial. It really is the best cure for a yucky tummy.

  25. merilyn 10 years ago

some good healthy breakfasts here thanks carly!
I always eat breakfast I love walnuts and dates which I eat early with a noice cup of green tea

Oh I love dates! I used to have dates with chia seeds on my porridge. Love it.

  26. emmabovary 10 years ago

I had a chopped up banana with yoghurt, honey and shredded coconut this morning – but I wish I had that banana muffin or bircher muesli! Often I have a shake for breakfast as I’m shedding some kg’s – will have to add these into my repertoire (and for Mister too, who is naughty and doesn’t eat breaky unless I pack it for him!)

    • Author
      Carly Jacobs 10 years ago

I’m the same, I actually quite like a shake. They’re really good for keeping calories down!

  27. Fifi 10 years ago

This is terrible, but I honestly had a steak and mushroom pie for breakfast this morning… We were in a small coastal town (in the middle of winter) where nothing was open except the bakery and all the breakfast-appropriate food had sold out. So a pie it was – yech (well, actually it was delicious, but definitely not a good breakfast!).

I am totally guilty of spending stupid amounts of money on last minute dry cafe toast breakfasts (even the bananas at my local cafe are $1.50)! These are some awesome ideas – I am drooling over those PB banana muffins – how good is the Macro Peanut Butter?!

PS Love the bircher in a jar!

    • Author

You have to have a breakfast pie when you’re in a coastal town. Macro PB is THE BOMB!

  28. musicoholic 10 years ago

Today? I had a kale, tomato and cheese omelette. My Master9 asked me, very earnestly, why I was cooking the lettuce… even though he knew the kale was leftover from last night’s beef rollups… sigh.

(PS – I LOVE doing 5:2!! Which reminds me… I must put some more bone broth on to cook…)

    • Author
      Carly Jacobs 10 years ago

I swear the 5;2 makes me a more productive human. I get so much energy from it! And I LOVE kale in omelettes. So crispy.

  29. JessB 10 years ago

Yum! These look great, Smaggle! I have been having trouble getting up for work lately, and would skip breakfast at home with the promise that if I got to work on time then I could buy breakfast. Mmm, Starbucks. Then my contract ended, and I got to sleep in for a while.
Now I’m back at another job (just a temp one for now) and had to make myself a similar promise – get out the door on time and you can eat on the tram! So I took a piece of grain-y bread with butter and vegemite (folded in half so the vegemite didn’t rub off on everything), and an apple, and… a chocolate, choc-chip muffin! I’m so ashamed of that last item, but it was so good, and really had me speed walking to the tram so that I could eat it sooner!
After that first day, I’ve been much more organised, and as today is Saturday, I got up to make my Uncle Toby’s Oats (with added sultanas, and cinnamon) and brought them back to bed. Winning!!!

First time commenting but had to say I’ve recently found the Be Natural Pink Lady Apple, Flame Raisin and Coconut porridge and loooove it. A dollop of 5am yogurt on top and I’m set till lunch most days (if the kids are at school – if they’re home I get sucked into morning tea lol)

  31. Super Sarah 10 years ago

I am trying to cut out processed grains at the moment in a half arsed paleo type way, so breakfasts have been a struggle as my go-to quickie brekkie is either littlest daughter’s leftover weetbix or porridge or toast with peanut butter. This morning I ate at my desk, two slices of soy linseed gluten free toast, spread with mashed roasted butternut squash and loaded up with sliced avo and a soft boiled egg, sprinkled with garlic salt and tabasco! DELICIOUS! Low GI, high protein, keeps me feeling alert and full until lunch time!

I’m a fourth generation porridge maker and enter into the ancient ‘art of the oat’ each evening by soaking my rolled oats (1/3 cup per person) in water (3/4 cups per person) overnight. In the dawn I add a good pinch of salt and ½ teaspoon of cinnamon, place on a medium heat while stirring constantly with a wooden spoon. Now please note it must be a wooden spoon because my Mum told me it had to be a wooden spoon, as her mother had told her, and her mother before…and you don’t argue with that many porridge makers. My ultimate dream is to one day be such a proficient porridge purveyor that I am able to swap my wooden spoon for a spurtle: the ancient and magical Scottish porridge stirring wand! But I digress. Once my porridge has reached the desired porridge-ness I pour it into a cold bowl and guild it with milk and maple syrup. Porridge is best eaten standing up in the kitchen looking out on the winter morning…

I eat breakfast at work most mornings , as eating at home would be too early. This is this mornings breakfast, prepared last night:
Two small handfuls of rolled oats
    Small handful of frozen blueberries
1/4 banana chopped (the rest goes in a smoothie)
    Cinnamon
    Water
    Coconut milk
Healthfood shop crunch peanut butter (usually goes in but I forgot)

Add all ingredients together in microwave container
Zap for 1 minute, stir and zap for another 60 seconds

Happiness and healthiness in 2 minutes!

Cheap imitation Sultana Bran here for brekkie this morning. Could be worse I suppose, though could be a lot better!

Oh I love a bit of sultana-esqe cereal every now and then!

  41. I had a piece of gluten-free toast with a soft fried (free-range) egg, short cut bacon and a coriander and macadamia nut pesto. Was very yummy.

  42. p.s. It took less than 5 minutes to cook, so not an uber-quick run-out-the-door meal but a pretty substantial meal in practically no time. Especially seeing I got to make myself a coffee at the same time!

5 minutes is fine! I dispute anyone saying that they don’t have time for breakfast. A bowl of cereal takes about 20 seconds to prepare and a few minutes to eat!

I had a 2 egg omelette with goats feta, cooked in coconut oil. Folded in half and placed sliced avocado and smoked salmon in the middle of it. Washed down with a Nutri Bullet smoothie made with frozen banana, frozen blueberries, home made almond milk, coconut water, LSA, Chia seeds, bee pollen, maca powder, spirulina. Scrumdidiliumptious!!

I can’t function without breakfast! My normal start to the day is a bowl of scrumptious gluten free Maple Muesli. Its ingredients include macadamias, cranberries, vanilla and love (from the Sunshine Coast)! I top it with a dollop of organic yoghurt and a splash of organic full cream milk & I’m good to go for the morning.

Do you have a link where I can buy that cereal? It sounds like Mr Smags would go bananas for it!
