How Was Your 2014?

How Was Your 2014?
Carly Jacobs

At the end of every year there’s always lots of people who are keen to see the back of it. I’ve been pretty blessed for the last 2 years to not be in that group and there’s no way I’m taking that for granted. I had a great 2013 and an even better 2014. It wasn’t smooth sailing the whole time though. I said farewell to my beautiful Poppy who left us in July this year and it’s made my family a bit empty and sad. I was basically a walking pile of snot for the whole of August and I’m a teeny bit disappointed that I didn’t get around to planning a proper holiday this year and only really travelled for work.

The rest of the year was bloody fantastic though. I travelled to Singapore, Bali and Queensland through blogging partnerships which was totally rad. Mr Smaggle and I started renting our own office which means I’m not running my business from the couch anymore and I have a proper desk chair and everything. I learned to play cards properly this year – mainly 500 and Yanif but I feel like it’s a good life skill. I become a 5:2 diet enthusiast and I’ve finished the year 5 kilos lighter than when I started it – bonza! I also celebrated another year (8 in total) with my glorious man. The universe has been treating me well.

The most important thing I did this year though was run two fundraising campaigns for Waratah Special Developmental School. With the Silly Things For A Bus Project and The F.R.I.E.N.D.S Themed Trivia night we raised $6155 in total for a new bus for the school. I’m beyond delighted and I want to thank each and every person who donated, supported and shared my campaigns. I’m so stoked and it’s been such a big help for the school. THANK YOU!!!!

My 2014 was awesome! It was my first good year in about 3 years and I definitely needed it. My business started doing well, I was able to quit my part-time job, I developed SO MUCH professionally, and I’ve enrolled for some more study. My partner got an amazing once-in-a-lifetime job opportunity and we survived 6 months of long-distance, and he’s landed a great job since the previous one ended. That said, I’m definitely ready for a break, so bring on Bali in February!

I had a very stressful 2013 so was very much looking forward to 2014 – but it was much the same as the previous year: loaded down with unreasonable workloads and a slew of health issues. So here I am hoping for a better 2015. 🙂

2014 was pretty good for our family. Personally, I am trying to focus on being more grateful and appreciative of what we have. Eg I used to complain about my house not having enough space or my kitchen not being magazine-worthy. Then I would see on tv, some amazing woman squatting in the dirt trying to make a meal for her family from seeds and grass, using a rock for a table. So, I would say to myself “stop whining, be thankful every single day that you were born in Australia and think of something you can do to give back”. Going to keep working on it in 2015. Xx

Oh totally that’s such a great thing to focus on. Being born in Australia is one of the biggest blessings… sometimes when I get cranky about having to do client work I have to give myself a proverbial slap and be like ‘Smags! You own a business doing what you love every day, you’re healthy, you have a great relationship and life is bloody excellent!’ We have so many options and so much freedom and it’s important to keep reminding ourselves of that.

I learnt my limits and just quietly, that is an important thing to learn. A dose of Shingles will do that to a girl! So 2014 was a year of getting back to basics – 8 hours sleep, drinking water, time for me.

It was also the year Master CAGG turned three and his little personality burst out from under the shadow of his personality plus older sister. What a delightful and charming little boy he is – watch out readers, lock up your daughters now!

Oh no! Shingles is the worst! Mama Smags had that a few years ago and it just wrecked her for months! 3 is the best age… they start getting super cheeky and cute! Enjoy!

2014 was a year of highs and lows and in betweens as life seems to want to be. Many wonderful things and lots to be grateful for. Every day you wake up is a good one

I’m doing my first fast day after a week off for Christmas and it’s TOUGH!!! Powering through though… just got to get back to my routine! x

  7. 2014 started out great with lots of adventure and plans and excitement for the future. But it ended with my mom getting sick and dying. I want this year to be over so much but at the same time once it ticks over to 2015, I’m that much farther away from my mom, I’m in a whole different year than she’ll ever be.

Oh darling that’s awful. I think it’s good to look forward to the new year. You’ll never be further away from your mum you’ll just be further away from the sadness… which is good because then you can only remember the good stuff! x

Thank you darling heart and straight back at you!

  9. You sound like you have had a very good year although I really think that is mostly to do with your rocking attitude. I’ve had another unsettled year- every single one has been a case of transient work and struggling through since 2009. It’s all a bit tiring. I did make a choice at the beginning of this year to socialise more, say yes more and to really focus on the positive stuff and that has really helped with the way I view the year.

Thank you! That’s lovely of you to say. I do try to be super positive at all times – it’s hard work but it really is a life changer! Socialising more is a great goal… I’m tempted to add that to the list! I tend to hang with Mr Smags or a handful of close friends and rarely deviate from that… you’ve tempted me!

I’m totally counting the hours until this year is over. (If I was in Oz it already would be!) This is the first year I am really, really glad to see end. It’s been pretty awful (although with some great parts) so I’m excited to make 2015 awesome.
