5 Awesome Ways To Celebrate Valentine’s Day If You’re Single

5 Awesome Ways To Celebrate Valentine’s Day If You’re Single

ome people find it a bit shit being single on Valentine’s Day. We aren’t supposed to make a big deal about it, but it’s definitely a thing. I can remember finding Valentine’s Day pretty unpleasant when all my mates were coupled up and I was flying solo. I always pretended like it didn’t worry me but honestly, I didn’t love it. The whole cutesy, heart filled celebration was a much bigger deal to me when I was single, so I thought I’d write a post for those rad solo-cats that might find V-day a bit of a challenge. Here are 5 awesome ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day if you’re single.

Cookies in form of heart in plate

1. Have Gal-entine’s/Pal-entine’s Day

Grab a bunch of girlfriends, guy friends or both and use it as an excuse to have a gorgeous get together. Try a picnic, a BBQ, a Make Your Own Pizza Night or play some board games. We used to have Leftovers nights too, where if anyone didn’t have plans us ‘Leftovers’ would go out for dinner. It was always a fun and silly way to celebrate V-Day if a few of us didn’t have any official plans.

2. Adopt a pet

If you’ve been thinking about adopting a pet (and only if you’ve been thinking about it!), why not make Valentine’s Day the anniversary of when you welcomed your new best friend into your life? I heard a story about a single girl who was hanging out the washing one Valentine’s Day and all of a sudden this beautiful lorikeet flew out of the sky, landed on her hand, walked down her arm and nuzzled into her neck. She tried to find the owner but couldn’t so she adopted this bird and he now just sits on her shoulder wherever she goes. She used hate Valentine’s Day and now it’s the anniversary of when her bird flew into her life. It just goes to show that Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to just be about romantic love.

3. Bake heart shaped treats and take them to work

When I worked in an office years ago, I arrived one Valentine’s Day and found a homemade heart-shaped cookie on my desk from one of my co-workers. It absolutely made my day. The cookies didn’t take her long to make and they totally brightened up the day for everyone. Sometimes people (particularly in Australia) can be a bit petulant about Valentine’s Day so why not be a balls out advocate and just go for it. Hater’s be damned. Sprinkle heart-shaped glitter every where you go, there’s a good little love spreader!

4. Host yourself for dinner

If you find yourself at a loose end on V-day just host yourself for dinner. Make something fancy, light some candles, pour yourself a glass of wine and watch your favourite movie. Give your house a good clean and just chill out with your bad self.

5. Ask someone out

The worst that could happen is that he/she could say no. The best thing that can happen is that he/she will say yes. I asked my partner out almost 9 years ago and I cannot image how less awesome my life would be if I didn’t do that. He could have said no but he definitely couldn’t have said yes if I didn’t him a chance to. Just do it. You have literally nothing to lose. If they say no, you’ll get over it pretty bloody quickly and the only other alternative is that they will say yes. Go for it.

Do you celebrate the ol’ V-day? How do you do it? Who do you celebrate with?

    Great post. 🙂

Even though I’m in a couple, we don’t usually make a big thing about it. But our friends and us use V-Day as an excuse to have a nice meal (singles and couples together). Sometimes we dine out, sometimes someone cooks and has us over. 🙂

We don’t usually celebrate either except we’ll often take the night off from working on the couch and actually concentrate properly on a show or movie. We’re out of control like that.

When I found myself single after my nine-year relationship ended, Valentines Day freaked me out no end. So I decided to just throw myself into the idea of celebrating alone. And my solo V-days have been some of the best ever. This year I’m taking myself out to breakfast, then I’ve got a massage booked. I’m going to spend the evening watching trashy movies with a cheese platter and some wine. It will be heaven.

Thank you lovely! Valentine’s is awfully commercial so it’s lovely to celebrate yourself when you get a chance!

Ive been married for over 10-ish years now, so Valentines day is no biggie for us. Although it wasn’t really pre-husband/ kids either though….
I used to help my neighbour (who is a florist) deliver her beautiful flowers to people on Valentines Day and it was so lovely seeing someone’s face light up when presented with a big bunch of flowers at their work. Such an awesome feeling.
I treat Valentines, as I treat Fathers / Mothers day/ Anniversaries etc. I either do some baking and share it round, or make someone a special treat that is just for them.
Homemade/cooked is always a winner, and it means more than a commercial card I think.
Now as my gorgeous nephew was born at this time, we get to celebrate him coming into our lives. Heaps more fun!

Oh that’s a lovely thing to celebrate on Valentine’s day! I usually do some kind of baking also… I might make little biscuits this year!

My beloved and I have a $30 limit with a focus on providing an experience this year. I’ve been on the phone to Bunnings this afternoon, and have organised a romantic lunch for two in the cafe at our local store, complete with candles and decorations. It’s her favourite place in the entire world. We celebrate it, but try to make it less about couplehood and more about appreciation, if that makes sense. Our second Valentine’s Day, we adopted Scouty, our fur-baby. She’s now three and has been the gift that keeps on giving.

I had an ugly break up of a long term thought it would be forever relationship a couple of years ago and since then I have just gone “Eff IT!” I am a wonderful person, and to quote a some sage advice, I don’t need a man. I do stuff with my class at school (because when you are teacher you do those things) and then simply ignore the day!

      I’m in a relationship and I tend to ignore Valentine’s Day! 🙂

Very cool ideas here! My fave is adopting a pet but you can’t really do that every year, but as you say you can celebrate the day as the day they came into your life. My husband’s birthday is on Valentines day and we still celebrate it.
