How To Make Breakfast In Bed

How To Make Breakfast In Bed
Carly Jacobs
I

tried to make my mother breakfast in bed once when I was kid and she dutifully sat there and ate the toast I’d prepared for her but I found out years later that she actually doesn’t really like eating in bed and would rather eat at the table – she’s not a fan of a crumbly bed. I ADORE eating (carefully) in bed and I bring my partner a smoothie or coffee in bed most mornings because I’m up before him. Sometimes I like to make it super special on weekends though and it occurred to me that it takes skill to learn how to make breakfast in bed,  so I thought I’d pop together a little post for the rookies out there – here’s how to make breakfast in bed.

Put it on a tray

Usually I just fling a bowl of cereal at my partner most mornings but when I want it to be special, I’ll pop everything on a pretty tray. It makes it much easier if there are multiple items, so the lucky person who’s getting their breakfast in bed doesn’t have to juggle a bunch of cups and plates.

Make enough for two… or the whole family!

Eating food alone is kind of weird so make sure you make enough so that you and anyone else can join in. Make sure everyone has a book to read and a plate to catch the crumbs and you’re good to go.

Avoid knife and fork foods

We had an eggs benedict in bed incident once that didn’t work out well for the sheets, so we stick to spoon or finger foods. Cereal, yogurt, toast, pastries = good. Eggs, sausages, omelettes = bad.

Make it look pretty

Put a napkin on the tray and perhaps some flowers. Make sure you plate the food nicely and maybe make special breakfast muffins. It costs nothing to give someone you love a breakfast treat and they’ll never forget it if you make it look gorgeous.

Make sure your breakfast receiver likes to eat in bed

Some people are really weird about eating in bed and that’s totally cool. You can still make up a beautiful breakfast tray for them just serve it to them at the table.

Have you ever had someone make you breakfast in bed? Or is your bed strictly a no food zone?

I love the idea of breakfast in bed but I don’t like the idea of crumbs because cockroaches like crumbs and I don’t like cockroaches, or crumby sheets come to that! We often cook up a special brekkie and serve it on a tray at weekends but I think jazzing that tray up with some napkins and flowers could take it to a whole new level!

We don’t seem to have crazy in bed crumb problems. I shove the plates right under our faces! 🙂

I love breakfast in bed, my husband hates its.
When I go back home to visit my elderly parents my Dad still brings me breakfast in bed… two Vegemite crumpets and a coffee every morning. When I was a kid it was his ploy to get me out of bed and off to church on a Sunday! (not good after a big Saturday night and not enough to keep the faith!).

Mr Smags was totally thrilled with this one – it was actually really tiny and cute!

  4. I’ve never had breakfast in bed served to me. Ever. I’ve had a coffee delivered, but no food. That needs to change…

Oh that’s so cute! I figure out as a grown up that Mama Smaggle would much prefer a night out at the theatre! 🙂

Mr Smags and I will sometimes have weekend afternoon snacks in bed like a bowl of cereal or some cheese and crackers! It’s the best.

Love, love, love breakfast in bed. Crumbs – bring it on! Pre-bubba we had a ritual every Saturday – a bacon and egg roll in bed, cup of tea for me and coffee for him. These days on a Saturday morning one of us is always up with the bubba while the other one sleeps in … and I seriously miss it. We still do the weekend bacon and egg roll, but it’s usually in the living room later on in the morning while we feed the baby a bottle and watch Sky News. Not quite so cosy. Oh the things you sacrifice for parenthood 🙂

I adore my Saturday mornings and it sounds selfish but it’s honestly one of the reasons why I don’t have kids yet. I’m loving my pre-kids (possibly no kids!) life. 🙂

I luuuuuurve breakfast in bed. Don’t think my man-friend would though, so he’s never made it for me. But I’ll jump up and make something and take it back to bed – do you do that Smags? Your presentation is exquisite though I’ve got plenty of opportunity for improvement there! x

Oh yeah! I do that all the time, especially in winter. I’ll make a bowl of porridge and eat it lying down on my stomach! 🙂

I love nothing more than a coffee delivered to bed and food just makes it better. I don’t have the crumby bed problem either as I hold the plate right under my chin!

Totally! I’m a master at not getting crumbs in my bed!

I have not had anything served to me in bed ever, but I would love it! Maybe I should serve up breakfast in bed and take the first step. Potentially I might be served breakfast in bed one Saturday morning!
