5 Simple De-Cluttering Tasks To Do This Weekend

Sometimes the thought of de-cluttering your house can be so overwhelming you just want to bury yourself under a blanket on the couch. As with most big beast chores like cleaning out your whole house, the easiest way to do it is one step at a time. Here are 5 simple de-cluttering tasks to do this weekend.

Retro radio, clock and flowers on table in room

Bedside table

Get rid of any non-essentials from your bedside table. Any books you’re not currently reading, old boxes of medication you’re no longer taking, stale glasses of water and any skin products you no longer use. Give it a good wipe down and dust and only put things back that are utterly essential. Throw away any rubbish and put everything else away where it belongs.

Make-up bag

Ditch any crumbly old compacts, broken lipsticks and stiff make-up brushes. Pop your make-up bag in your next load of washing, wipe any dusty items with a make-up wipe and re-pack the bag with only the utter essentials that you use every day. If you don’t wear glitter eyeliner everyday, that novelty sparkly gel liner has no place in your makeup bag. Ditch it.

Cutlery drawer

Take all the items out of your cutlery draw and put everything in the dishwasher. Once everything is clean, only put back items that you actually use. If you’ve got a pastry brush that you haven’t used in three years, ditch it. If there’s a scuzzy old fork that you refuse to eat off because it’s gross, ditch it. Give the drawer a good wipe down and only let the essentials back in.

Bouquet of pink roses

Wallet

For a basic clean you need to ditch any old receipts, loyalty cards you don’t use any more and vouchers and coupons that are expired. If your wallet is really out of control, then do a proper clean out with my How To Downsize Your Ridiculously Enormous Wallet article.

Coffee table

I’m a firm believer that coffee tables should bring you joy. They should only display very useful and very beautiful things. Kids toys, bills, dirty plates and crap that came out of your pockets should not live on your coffee table. Take everything off your coffee table, give it a good wipe over and only put back things that are beautiful or very useful. Plants, candles, beautiful magazines and books are welcome. Remote controls are fine but try popping them in a pretty box or basket. Anything else should be put away properly where it belongs.

What are you up to this weekend? Doing any de-cluttering or house maintenance?

Have you read Marie Kondo’s book? SO AMAZING. I freakin’ LOVED it – reading it was practically a spiritual experience . .

No I haven’t but it’s on my list – so many have recommended it to me!

I half way through a major declutter at our place and it’s exhausting. It’s also beyond worrying how quickly stuff turns to clutter. This year I’m all about not buying or accepting the clutter in the first place. Off to do my hand bag (gulp)…

Oh definitely – I get friends trying to off load crap onto me and I’m just not doing it! I don’t let crap past my front door any more.

I am agreeing with everything said so far, esp that book.

This weekend, looking after dogs for two lots of friends (woohoo – extra dog time!). NEED to do some gardening. Offloading kefir grains to the almost-daughter-in-law. Hoping I’ll be up to taking at least one dog for one walk. And the usual chores 🙂

Oh I hope your weekend went well! It sounds very productive! Mine was busy – I went wedding dress shopping with my mate that I’m a bridesmaid for!

  5. I love a good declutter! When I’m in the zone, I can power through rooms and throw things away like some kind of cleaning machine. My makeup collection is next on my hit list! x

I went bonkers on my make-up ages ago and threw away whole palettes of make-up I’ve barely touched. I just don’t wear that much make-up anymore!

I actually really need to do ALL of these. Have you been spying on me through the teddy cam again?

During my move from Ohio to Chicago I unloaded at least 15 bin bags full of stuff. Once I got here I got rid of 6 more and several boxes. I just can’t stand having all that shit taking up space anymore. I still feel like I have too much! Next is my make up and my books. After that crafting/sewing. It’s so freeing!

OH alright! I will do it, thanks! (I’m not really grumpy – sometimes I just have to be told to do something for it to stick) 🙂
