5 Ways To Wake Up With Seriously Fresh Looking Skin

5 Ways To Wake Up With Seriously Fresh Looking Skin
Carly Jacobs
This post is brought to you my Maybelline Dream Wonder
I

was looking back on some photos of me as a teenager the other day and my skin is freaking LUMINOUS. I don’t remember it being that amazing at the time but seriously it looks like an angel rubbed it’s glittery, gossamer, gold-tipped wing on my face. I’m not totally freaking out about premature aging yet (my parents are pushing 60 and they both barely look a day over 40) but I just miss that iridescent glow of extreme youth that seems to be getting harder for me to achieve these days.

I’ve been quite obsessed with my skin health routine recently so I’ve partnered with Maybelline this month (teenage Smags would be SO EXCITED about this collaboration!) to promote their Dream Wonder foundation (I’ll review it in detail later in the post but it’s like butterfly marshmallow kisses on your face) and I thought I’d share these 5 ways to wake up with seriously fresh looking skin.

design

1. Get religious about your night time skin care routine

I do this routine every single night without fail… unless I’ve been at a wedding in which case I probably can’t find my shoes let alone my anti-ageing night serum.

Cleanse
Apply night serum
Apply night cream
Apply eye cream

I’m not fussy about brands and I tend to mix it up a little bit but I always do these four things before bed every night and it’s made a huge difference to the appearance of my skin when I wake up in the morning.

2. Drink water in an obsessive way

I start every single day with a litre of lemon water – this is the very first thing I do. It not only hydrates my body but it also eliminates that early morning foggy head feeling and it makes my skin look less tired and dull.

3. Never, ever leave the house without sunscreen

This picture is of an American truck driver call Bill McElligot. He has never worn sunscreen in his life and this is what his face looks like after a lifetime of sun exposure to one side of his face through his truck’s window. Seriously. Sun screen. Every single day. The 50+ stuff and you can’t just use products with sunscreen in them. They certainly help but you really need to start with a solid base of killer sunscreen and then layer your SPF products on top.

4.   Actually get a good night’s sleep

Sometimes I don’t finish my work day until around 9pm and many people have kids awake until then too. What we should be doing is taking ourselves off to bed but we tend to muck around on our phones and binge watch TV shows. I look noticeably worse in the morning when I’ve been a bit of a rebel and stayed up late to finish the last season of Game of Thrones, so get your little butt to bed early if you have any hope of waking up the next day looking refreshed.

5.   Choose the right foundation

There is nothing more aging than caking on layers of thick make-up, even if you have decent skin. My favourite look of the moment is light foundation – I’ve been using Maybelline Dream Wonder and it’s seriously the silk pillowcase of the make-up world. It’s a really light foundation which I love because it doesn’t feel like I’ve smeared cement all over my face.

After foundation I skip mascara (Lara Bingle says it makes you look older), add some bright lipstick, a teeny dab of blush and a quick swipe through my eye brows with a brow definer. Done. The trick is all in the base though, you want something that’s fluid to apply, isn’t too matte (or shiny!), lasts a decent amount of time and provides even and light coverage. This stuff is perfect for medium coverage – when you want something a bit heavier than BB cream but a bit lighter than a heavy foundation.

I’ve just been dabbing it onto my palms and rubbing it all over my mug and it works great but if you want to be a bit professional here’s a video of how to apply it properly.

Oh and also you have the chance to win 1 of 500 Maybelline Dream Wonder foundations by entering here but I reckon you should just buy some. It’s pretty rad.

  1. My mum swears by sleeping on a silk pillowcase for better hair and skin. She also told me to sleep on your back so you don’t get chest wrinkles, or chinkles.

MISS CARLY SMAGGLE! Make that the last time that you ever ever pay any attention to anything that that Bingle woman says. She is dumber than a dalmation. And mascara is wonderful. In fact, Maybelline make wonderful ones. Peace out x

Oh I like Lara Bingle – I think she’s a bit of a mismanaged sweetheart. I do love mascara but you should totally try the bare eyes and bright lippy thing. Totally works. And I LOVE Maybelline mascara – I’m a great lash kid.

  4. I really should get serious about doing a face routine, the lines are starting to show :/

I never did end up finding my shoes after the last wedding I went to! I did however manage to wash my makeup off before falling into bed that night. No matter how much I’ve had to drink, I have never ever gone to bed wearing makeup. I’m always amazed by this actually, I can never recall doing it but it’s just something I do on autopilot.

I recently switched to only natural skin care products (Lush and Bodyshop) because I got paranoid that the harsh chemicals in other products would speed up the ageing process. My skin is really sensitive so I try not to overdose it with products, I only use a cleanser once a day (if I need to remove makeup) and otherwise just wash my face with water and tone with tea tree and then moisturize. I used to be super paranoid and used Proactive just to make sure I never ever got a breakout but when a friend pointed out that I was essentially bleaching my face I got scared and stopped right away.

I really need someone to invent a magical sunscreen that is not oily and disgusting. I have tried so many, especially the ones that claim to not be oily and disgusting. Sunscreen makes me break out. Really badly. And it makes my face look like I’ve washed it in the fish and chip shop deep fryer. I only wear it when I go out and play sport because I have no choice and always end up paying for it the next day with a face full of zits. It’s a sad story. I’m going to end up with a face like that truck driver by next year, I just know it.

I adore Lush products but I find half of them you actually need to keep them in the fridge which I can never remember to do. Proactive totally freaks me out – a girl I went to school with used proactive and her face practically peeled off. It was so gross. Try Dermalogica matte sunscreen! It’s the bomb.

Mecca sunscreen is pretty awesome, inexpensive and a great foundation primer. I think it’s called ‘to save face’ or something.

Sunscreen suggestions please! Something that isn’t oily and greasy and yuk!

  7. I (inadvertently) tried the bare eyelashes look yesterday and found myself at Coles on my lunchbreak buying an emergency mascara to keep in my drawer at work! Clearly, I can’t live without it. Nor can I be without my water bottle, a good night’s sleep or a good foundation. x

Ha! So funny! I’ve been bare faced all week because make-up just melts off in Bali but I kind of love it… no fuss!

Enough sleep is probably the hardest part of this! I stay up way too late. It’s hard to get into bed much less sleep before midnight. It’s easy to put on serums, but getting to bed when you’re busy at night is really tough.

  9. Katherine O'Brien 9 years ago

What night serums and creams do you recommend? Actually, eye creams too, for that matter. I’ve been using a Mario Badescu night cream and Mecca To Save Eyes but I really have no idea what’s good. The Mario Badescu just feels like it coats my face and doesn’t sink in. Keen for recommendations!
(Also, on the note of face sunscreen: I’ve been using the Mecca To Save Face sunscreen and I find it’s still a tad greasy – although not as bad as some)

Have to say I’ve become a firm advocate of the Arbonne RE9 Anti Aging products (for that matter – the body, hair and cosmetics too). My friend introduced me to the products two years prior to when I started using them and I chose not to as I ‘liked’ the ones i was using. I just wish I had of started using them sooner. I have seen a HUGE difference in the overall quality of my skin and eye area where I was considering fillers and botox. I now feel comfortable having make-up free days and certainly don’t need the cosmetic injections.

I am loving ILUKA by Natalie Imbruglia. It’s been two weeks and i am dewy fresh faced ! I’ve had a soft spot for Nat since my teens and i’m loving her new venture!

I love finding new ways to glow, too! The fastest hacks I’ve found are:
    – A light weekly Alpha-Beta exfoliation peel (at home) I use SkinActives.
    – WATER! Filtered water, by the bucket!
    – Eating a cup of frozen, organic blueberries, daily! (blended in smoothies or eaten with breakfast).
    – Vitamin C serums are INSTANT glow producers. I daily exfoliate and then use this CHEAP serum that rivals some ‘Big Brand’ $100+ serums I’ve used previously http://www.skinactives.com/Vitamin-C-Serum-Ascorbic-Acid-L.html
    – An excellent night serum and properly hydrating night cream
    – Good quality sleep (enhanced with meditation, no devices for 30mins prior to sleep, a magnesium supplement to relax muscles, earplugs to eliminate noise and a sleep app that wakes me in the right sleep cycle).
    – *cough* sex *cough*
