The Skeptic’s Guide To Getting Your Palm Read

The Skeptic’s Guide To Getting Your Palm Read

efore my recent trip to Bali I’d never been to a fortune teller but strangely enough I actually know how to ‘read’ palms. I’m a child of the 90s so The Craft, Fiona Horne and Inner Harmony stores influenced most of my behavioural choices from 1997 until at least 2000.

Although I’m a firm believer in science and Dr Karl is the closest thing to a guru I’ll ever have, I still like to dip my toe in the Woo Woo pool from time to time. I’m not about to start performing spirit cleanses or anything but I meditate and tongue scrape, so I’d class myself as a dabbler in the holistic lifestyle space. I don’t believe in fortune telling or horoscopes though so this was a bit of a stretch for me but for those of you who are interested, here’s the skeptic’s guide to getting your palm read…

Take everything they say with a grain of salt…

He told me I was going to have five significant romantic loves and that I’d already had three of them and I have two left to go. He was totally off the mark on this one. If I had any significant loves before Mr Smaggle, I must have blinked and missed them. If he’s referring to any of my short lived early 20s flings he has extremely low standards. As for the remaining two loves… I’m sure Mr Smaggle can find room for Benedict Cumberbatch and Idris Elba in our bed.

…but still be inspired

Total inaccuracy of my romantic life aside, he said I was one of the most naturally lucky people he’d ever met and I totally agree. He said I have no ‘inside scars’ and that people who are lucky have no obstacles. I don’t like the idea of cherry picking in fortune telling sessions but having a lucky life outlook can never be a bad thing.

Have a positive attitude about it

I’m a massive skeptic but I still had an absolute ball. When he held my hand and started murmuring weird things with his eyes closed, I didn’t roll my eyes and act like a tool about it. I embraced the experience because it was weird and awesome and something I’d never done before. He had really long nails that were painted sparkly orange and the room was hot and fragranced with incense. There were colourful umbrellas and water features on every available space on the floor and he had an adorable little daughter who played on the stairs with her pet hamster. Just because you don’t believe in reading fortunes doesn’t mean you can’t have an amazing experience.

Be supportive of believers

I went with two of my mates and the session meant more to them than it meant to me, so I adjusted my language when we debriefed afterwards. I was still honest but it’s important to respect the experience of others. Just because I don’t believe that someone can read into my future by looking at my palm doesn’t mean I’m right. I’m probably right but there’s no way to prove it, hence there’s no reason to be a dick about it.

Enjoy the experience

Take if for what it is, don’t over think it and be inspired if that’s where the experience takes you. Even if it’s not an exact science, it’s still a fun thing to do.

interesting and fun whilst on holidays smags!
I have a friend who reads palms, does numerology charts and horoscopes … plus does the I ching! she certainly seems to be tuned into people! … has an extra sense!
others who do energy anatomy readings and healings!
I’ve been there done them all, but now I just listen to my own inner voice!
horoscopes still fascinate me … and numerology!
o don’t base my life decisions on them though!
    love m:)X

I’m the same. I think they’re kind of cool but I don’t pay much attention to them. x

  2. Good on you, babe! Such a great attitude to go into – and come out of – such a thing. I too like to dip my toe into the woo woo pool {best analogy EVER!} and the last time I ever saw a psychic (tarot card reader) was nearly 11 years ago. I’ve always had a little urge to see someone again, but I’m just so happy where I am right now, I’m not sure I’d want to hear anything that would derail that. But then again, like you said, take everything with a grain of psychic salt… x

I’m a huge toe dipper in the woo woo pool. I might not ever go again though… it did seem a little pointless. 🙂

  3. LOL at The Craft and Fiona Horne! I was right there with my esoteric books, bindis, incense and candles!! (My blonde hair went green when I tried to dye it black with the old Napro Live Colour sachet though: fail)

Not so much palm reading but I did have a reading with my astrology teacher which was like a trifecta of tarot, my horoscope and numerology. It was so true, it was spooky. It was in the olden days so I still have it recorded on a cassette tape but have nothing left to listen to it on. I used to read tarot cards too, so I’ve been both the teller and the receiver of fortunes. I think the key thing with all things fortune is to embrace the experience and keep an open mind. It’s pretty much like anything in life the more you put in, the more you get out.

    • I honestly wouldn’t even know how to start with playing a cassette tape! That must be super spooky though.

Had my palm read years ago…and he was amazing. Could not believe how spot on the reading was. Kathryn

I think a good palm reader or fortune teller is really reading you, not your palm. It’s interesting sometimes to hear what someone is picking up from you, what you are giving off to the outside world. These things can give you some faith & hope when you need it, and you’re right – just disregard what doesn’t sound right.

    • Oh I agree I love this! Although he did say I was drinking too much alcohol which is stupid because I hadn’t had a drink in 2 months when I saw him! I hope I don’t look like I have a drinking problem???

  7. Have never had my palm read but am intrigued. Have done the psychic thing a few times and just pick and choose what I want to hear.

    • I think that’s important. I’m not going to break with Mr Smags just because this guy said I still have 2 great loves left!

I totally agree with all of this! I’m a skeptic too but I had my palm read for kicks once. That’s the thing – it can just be for fun and give you things to think about!

While I am a bit skeptical but open minded (if that makes sense) I find that a reading of some sort can help me look at things from a different perspective – helpful if I am a bit stuck. That said, I had an amazing reading done in Bali at Christmas and 2 really big things that he said would happen actually have – lets just see about the 3rd!

Yup! I wrote a post about my first tarot card reading experience 🙂 Definitely a skeptic, but kinda wish that I was a believer!
