Dr Karl said he loved me. I can die happy now.

I’ve been listening to Dr Karl for a few years now and I will do pretty much anything that man tells me to do. Same with Oprah. If she’s like ‘Hey girl it’s all about wearing Lycra g-string leotards and drinking parsnip milk this month!‘ I’d be like ‘Okay Oprah – I LOVE YOU AND WHERE’S MY FREE CAR???’.

Anyway back to Dr Karl. I heard a podcast from him recently where he talks about solar power and photovoltaics in domestic homes. Basically he’s hooked up his whole house to be a power machine and now he actually contributes energy to the communal grid. How cool is that? I’m actually a bit of a science and environmental nerd at heart and I’ve partnered up with Origin this week to talk shit about solar trends. It’s probably the most intelligent thing I’ve ever written. For reals.

So tell me… do you have an idol? Someone who you always listen to? Is it Oprah? It’s Oprah isn’t it?

P.S Also you should totally follow Smaggle on Facebook or sign up for the Smaggle weekly newsletter because there’s usually Beyonce in those places.

Nice piece at Origin Energy! Lots happening in the renewable field generally – we’ve got solar hot water and PV panels, but since we also run a server rack and several tropical fish tanks plus Best Beloved’s beer fridge, we still using more than we produce. The research the Tesla company are putting into efficient/compact storage batteries is also a potential game changer. I’m watching the screw based vertical wind turbines – there are some extraordinarily lovely ones, both ultra-efficient and quiet. Waiting mostly for planning regulations to catch up….

And um, no idols as such, but maybe Neil Gaiman comes close 🙂

I’m so excited about the renewable energy space. In Germany if you have solar power and add power to the grid you can actually earn money as other people pay to use your power. How cool is that?

Ive got a heap of minimalist peeps that I admire, and I am slowly changing my familys outlook on the subject of possessions. I love the approach of have less, but experience more. Travelling and seeing more of the world is a bigger thing for me than having a bigger TV to watch things on.
I do love me some Louis Theroux though. Damn though smart boys have something about them…….

I’m doing that too! I did the minimalist project in Feb and it was awesome. I take my one item in one item out boundaries very seriously. I adore Louis. I wish he had more stuff because I’ve already watched every thing of his!

I’m sure it’s no surprise to you that I’m allll about renewable energy. In fact, my dad just started a company that will be able to supply batteries for homes to rig their solar panels up to, allowing you to use the solar power your house generates even when the sun isn’t shining! They’ve just installed a couple as trials, but it’s definitely exciting to see the advances we’re making. Now, if only we could get some serious changes made Federally…

Oh yes! Obviously! That idea of your dad’s sounds amazing – that will make huge changes to areas like Melbourne that might struggle with getting enough sunlight!

  4. We are so desperate to get solar panels on our place – we’d be cranking power back into the grid in no time, I reckon! As for my idol, obvs it’s Beyoncé. Because: Beyoncé. x

She’s the best. Sometimes I just watch endless videos of her dancing. She’s so hot.

  5. Julie Bishop. The woman is a power house. Lawyer, politician, hottie.
