How To Look As Gorgeous At The End Of The Night As You Did At The Beginning

How To Look As Gorgeous At The End Of The Night As You Did At The Beginning

ou know how when you go to a party or a wedding and you look so freaking gorgeous at the beginning of the night but as time slips away and you’ve had one too many glasses of champagne, you end up looking like a photo that you really don’t want to be tagged in on Facebook? Yeah. That.

how to look gorgeous

I once met a lady who refused to dance at a wedding because she didn’t want to get sweaty and ruin her hair. Fuck that! I love going out and cutting loose on the dance floor but I still don’t want to look like a total troll at the end of the night so I’ve popped together a little check list to keep you sorted. Here’s how to look as gorgeous at the end of the night as you did at the beginning…

Wear your hair up

No matter how good your hair is, if you sweat on it, it’s probably going to look like crap. Messy up-dos, glam ponytails, top knots and head bands will be your best friend when you’re partying hard.

Pack powder, blotting papers and concealer in your hand bag

If you’re looking a little on the messy side the best option is to patch up your make-up base. Give your face a quick press with blotting paper, lightly dust your t-zone with powder and dab some concealer on your trouble spots. Try not to re-apply mascara, eye-liner or blush as it might look cakey. Just do a quick clean and touch up and you’ll be looking fresh as a tipsy little daisy!

Skip the bright lipstick

Unless you want to duck to the toilet every half hour and perfectly re-apply your poppy pink pout, it’s best to stick to a lighter colour or a more manageable lip stain or gloss. I have a terrible track record with re-applying lipstick and I just end up with a feathery, chalky outline. Unless you’re a hardcore lipstick addict, it’s best to go in a more manageable direction for party lip colour.

Pack foldable flats

If you’re wearing heels and you know you won’t be able to last the whole night, pack some foldable flats in your bag. That way you’ll be able to exit your location limp-free and without grubby bare feet.

Go easy on the make-up in the first place

Try to avoid doing smoky eye make-up for a full day/evening event. Stale smokey eyes are the enemy of freshness. Try a nude shadow with a brown eyeliner pencil and a swipe of mascara. It will still look fresh hours later and you won’t end up with droopy panda eyes by the end of the night.

How does your face hold up on a big party night? Do you look decent? Or a bit like a zombie?

P.S Did you know there’s a Smaggle weekly newsletter? And a Smaggle Facebook page? You should get all up in both their faces. It’s totally worth it, I promise.

Love these. Hair UP – such a good one. I went to an outside wedding on the Sunny Coast hinterland last year, temperature during the wedding was 43 degrees and I had to duck to the bathroom to fashion a last minute up do. Was so glad I had thrown in some bobbys at the last minute just in case.

I always wear my hair up to fancy events – I sometimes even wear head scarves.

I always end up like a zombie! These are great tips. I’m a big fan of the hair up scenario though. I must get my hands on some foldable flats, a much better look than bare feet!

I adore mine! You can just get them from chemists – Dr Scholl have great ones!

I always end up looking like a drunk zombie by the end of an event. Even if I’m not drunk. Oops.

Me too! I get sweaty and hot quite easily (super sexy right?) So I end up looking like a drowned rat really quickly.

If you’re going to change to foldable flats, I would say make sure you can put your high heel shoes in a bag too- one of my friends changed her shoes at a wedding at the Melbourne Royal Botanical Gardens, and then had to walk a little way to get a taxi and she lost one of her shoes!!!
If you’ve got a little bag, I’d advise taking a foldable bag to put your heels in. It can live under the table or on the back of your chair at the event, but it just means you know where your shoes are!

I have a Marimekko bag for that exact purpose!

If I am going out at night as a rule I don’t wear makeup for the whole day and only put makeup on right before I am off to the event, even if it means running errands all day bare faced. Lush has this great face mask called “Catastrophe Cosmetic” which is for those with oily skin and it sucks all the oil out of your face so that for two days after using it your skin is really nice and matte. I always use it the night before if I have a day coming up where I”ll have to wear makeup for ages. I’m too lazy to blot or do touch ups so this stuff is a godsend. I also hate carrying clutches, so I wear a long lasting lipstick, Australis Velours lipsticks are great if you’re going out for cocktails and don’t plan on eating anything messy and greasy.

Oh that stuff sounds great! I don’t have oily skin but I do sweat a bit so maybe that will help?

My face is a kind of lipstick black hole, which means constant reapplication and I usually skip it altogether. The only time I’ve successfully worn lipstick all night (including dancing and drinking) was when a makeup artist friend used some magic 24-hour long-stay lipstick on me. I had to pretty much use paint stripper to remove it though.

Any more hair tips for ladies with a fringe? I always put my hair up on nights out, but prefer my fringe out. Then 70% of it sticks to my face in a weird way after a good dance. Hot.

Maybe a headband that goes over your fringe hippy style? I’ve not had much luck with fringes in the past!

  8. Got to love those pics after a fun night. I’m the one who looks like my two year old applied my makeup.

I also look like I’ve just run a marathon. Sweaty and pale like I’m about to fall over.

Oh I loathe those photos! There are a few of me floating around Facebook in which I look like a racoon…..needless to say I did some warranted untagging! I find that packing some powder and some cotton tips at a minimum will get me through – the cotton tips are great for freshening up your eye make up and cleaning up the under eye issues and then powder over the top. I’m with you on the up-do – unless I’m not dancing (at all) I don’t wear my hair down. Fab post as usual Carly! xo

Powder works! I always steer clear of hit in real life – I feel like it makes me look chalky – but it’s great for nights out on the town.

  10. I’ve always envied those women who can rock a bold red lip. All. Night. Long. {Excuse me while I have a Lionel Richie dance break…} Too high maintenance for me! Love the idea of a beautiful natural coloured lipgloss that’s quick and easy to touch up. x
