The Best Podcasts To Listen To While Working Out

The Best Podcasts To Listen To While Working Out
Carly Jacobs
I

’ve recently become a crazy podcast addict thanks to Serial. I hadn’t actually listened to any Podcasts before then but I’m naturally very fomo and everyone was talking about it so I had to get on board.

best podcasts

I’m now totally addicted to podcasts and I listen to one nearly every day, usually when I’m on the treadmill or walking around the city. They’re brilliant to listen to when you’re exercising so I’ve come up with a list of the best podcasts to listen to when you’re getting all sweaty…

You Must Remember This

This podcast is by Karina Longworth and each week she publishes a 20-ish minute episode about the forgotten history of 20th century Hollywood. One week there will be a story about Marilyn Monroe and her rise to fame and the next week might be about Sean Penn and his history of celebrity lovers. They’re gorgeous little snippets of factual history and they’re awesome for a quick session on the treadmill.

Criminal

Criminal is literally a podcast about people who have done the wrong thing. It’s not all blood and gore – there was a fantastic episode about a Venus Fly Trap crime ring in North Carolina where they literally stole Venus Fly Traps. Criminal is light and entertaining and definitely not so scary that you couldn’t listen to it walking around the park by yourself.

RadioLab

This podcast is about everything. There will be a them each week and there will be series of stories relating to that theme. Tip: Don’t skip a theme because you think it’s boring. I almost skipped the Football episode and it turned out to be one of my favourites. I usually listen to RadioLab when I’m doing weights – there’s something about the flow of the show that just works with repetitive actions.

Cracked

The team at Cracked is awesome. They kind of de-bunk popular culture myths and look at weird trends in art. For example there’s a fabulous episode about actor trademarks where they point out quite accurately that Tom Hanks is seen peeing in most of his movies. Cracked is great because it always leaves me thinking about weird stuff which is an excellent way to be distracted on the stair master.

This American Life

This one isn’t a hard sell – it’s basically an hour-long show where they discuss a range of interesting topics. One of my favourite episodes was the internet troll episode where one of the journalists conducts an interview with her worst troll – a guy who created a twitter account under the name of her dead father and tweeted the journalist that she was a huge disappointment to him. They have a new episode every week and I rarely miss one.

Bonus: Serial

If you haven’t listened to Serial – stop what you’re doing immediately and listen to it. I haven’t been as addicted to anything this badly since The Babysitter’s Club books. It’s actually just brilliant. I’ve also been listening to Undisclosed which is based on the same case but has no affiliation with Serial. It’s honestly not as good but it’s bloody interesting if you’re a creep like me and can’t get enough evidence in the Adnan Syed case.

Death, sex and money, I have relistened to Anna Sales podcasts again and again whilst on drives or walks. Also Savage love, explicit but thought provoking and mind expanding.
Looking forward to everyone’s suggestions as I adore listening to podcasts walking or on solo drives.

I love “The Moth”- true stories told by real people on stage without notes. Usually three stories per episode, about 15 minutes altogether. Also, “Funny, Cuz It’s True” (also real stories told without notes) and “Short Cuts” (brief UK documentaries).

We listened to Serial on a road trip and I was hooked. I was at quite a loss since it finished. I tried a few podcasts after that, but nothing measured up to Serial. I heard that there’s a Serial Sequel coming soon but in the meantime, I’ll be checking your others out because my ears have been empty for too long!

I like listening to Amy Porterfield or Small Business Big Marketing. While I’m exercising is pretty much the clearest my head is going to be so I like to take advantage of that with business thinking!!

I’m a total podcast addict at the moment too! I don’t have enough time in my week to listen to them all so they are banking up, but now I want to add these ones as well! Some of my current favs are:
    – the Osher Gunsberg podcast (each week he interviews someone doing interesting/inspiring work, it’s really great)
    – Junktime (it’s an AFL podcast, so maybe not your cup of tea!)
    – The Slow Home Podcast (Brooke from Slow Your Home has started a podcast & it’s amazing)
    – Meshel Laurie’s Nitty Gritty Committee (sound quality is a bit poor but still really interesting chats with people)
    – TOFOP (Wil Anderson’s original podcast – his Wilosophy one is great too)
    – Gilmore Guys (two guys talking about each episode of Gilmore Girls, plus sometimes they interview people involved, including the guy that played Luke!)

Aaaand that’s probably enough from me!

Liz I think you stole my phone! Haha our podcast lists are identical! The only other one I would add is How Did This Get Made, which is hosted by three comedy actors (who you’ve seen in everything) who review a movie that was… less than amazing. It is always hilarious (like laugh out loud on the train hilarious!) and they get great guests (like Adam Scott!). Recent movies they’ve done include Con Air, Lake Placid and Xanadu.

I love Gilmore Guys!!! Also I just listen to podcasts whenever I walk anywhere. I’ll often walk places on purpose just so I can listen to a podcast!

Had to google “podcast”. I knew basically what it was, but not how to. Right this minute downloading Serial. Seems from popular opinion, I am starting with the best. How will anything else that comes after be able to compare! Shh! Don’t talk to me today I will be busy with my earbuds firmly in place. xx

Love all of these, the only one I didn’t know was cracked, off to download. Can I be cheeky and suggest “two fat expats”, two Aussie chicks talking about making your expat life fatter as in living life to the full. I’m working on babysitting so I can get to you in Adelaide, we fly in on the 14th!

SERIAL is the one I use when trying to get people hooked on the idea of a podcast. That and START UP (follows a business starting). I also like listening to the TEDTalks podcasts for inspiring stories, and the NERDIST WRITERS PANEL, CHILDREN OF TENDU & SCRIPTNOTES for Writing Tips & stories & interviews.

Interview shows like GIRL ON GUY with Aisha Tyler from Archer & Who’s Line and NERDIST are awesome. Some TV shows like Orphan Black (CLONE CAST), Sleepy Hollow & The X Files (X FILES FILES with Kumail from Silicon Valley) have companion podcasts.

And if you want serialised storytelling, you can’t go past WELCOME TO NIGHT VALE, or WE’RE ALIVE (zombies) or OUR FAIR CITY.

Of course, if you’ve given up on doing anything productive and want to listen to a bunch of blind and vision impaired people playing Dungeons and Dragons… well GOING IN BLIND has that covered (that one is self-promote-y, so feel free to ignore. But all the others mentioned are a blast!).

Suffice to say I love me some podcasts, and they make exercise and commuting so much easier!

Oh that sounds great! Veggie Mama and I were planning on doing one about literary of the 90s like Babysitters club!

“No Such Thing As A Fish”, presented by the QI Elves (the team who research and write the questions for the show). Love the podcast almost as much as the show.

  15. I’m so far behind the eight ball with this but I’m already addicted to WAY many things, I’ll have to a bit longer to join the podcast fad.

They’re great if you spend a lot of time in the car!

  16. I’m halfway through Serial and so hooked. It’s been a welcome distraction while I start to pack up our house, that is going to take forever so I’m really keen to keep the whole podcast thing going so will be moving on to your other suggestions next! Thank you!

You’ll need them to fill the Serial gap. It’s a big one. x

  17. Everyone goes on about listening to podcasts but isn’t just like the boring bits of radio babble where you are waiting for the good song to come on next?

No it’s not like that at all! Give Serial a go. It’s brilliant for podcast beginners.
