5 Podcasts You Should Really Be Listening To

5 Podcasts You Should Really Be Listening To
Carly Jacobs
I

‘ve become super obsessed with podcasts this year. I live in Melbourne so I walk everywhere, often up to 2 hours a day, so I’m constantly looking for new podcasts as I can rip through a whole feed of a newly-discovered podcast in the space of a week. Serial will always be the love of my life and here are a few that I find awesome at the gym. However if you walk a lot, here are 5 podcasts you should really be listening to…

podcasts you should really listen to

Lore

This is a very new discovery but Iโ€™ve binge listened my way through the whole series and I love it. Itโ€™s written and narrated by Arron Mahnke and each episode is a 20 minute story about something creepy. Warning: Episode 7 In The Woods, is horrifying. Donโ€™t listen to it alone or in the darkโ€ฆ and definitely not in the woods.

Call Your Girlfriend

This is a gorgeous podcast with two of the most awesome chicks in the world. Ann Friedman and Aminatou Sow are two long distance besties who call each other every week and record their conversation. Itโ€™s funny, thought provoking and very smart stuff. Get on it.

Sean Wes

This is more for the business minded people but Sean Wes is a entrepreneur who really pushes the envelope on digital marketing. Iโ€™m making this sound super dry, but itโ€™s not I promise. It basically a podcast about awesome, actionable business building tips from a dude who’s tried them all himself.

No Such Thing As A Fish

This one is a classic but sometimes it gets forgotten. Itโ€™s made by the researchers of QI and itโ€™s pretty much a podcast about the cool shit they discovered that week. Very listenable.

Gilmore Guys

Two guys who watch and dissect episodes of The Gilmore Girls. Very cute and a must listen for anyone whoโ€™s a Gilmore Girls fan.

The X-Files Files. Welcome To Night Vale. Cracked (your recommendation!). How To Do Everything. And Judge John Hodgman remains my all-time favorite. Woo!

The longest shortest time (I’m not a parent, but I just love the podcast) Note to self, Strangers, Death sex and Money, Invisibilia, Radiolab and Love and Radio.

I just started listening to Death Sex and Money and it was amazing! An episode about siblings? It was brilliant! Great suggestion.

I, too, am obsessed… I’ve been so sad that I haven’t had the time to read, and so to find the podcast option for when I’m driving or walking has been incredible. I’d go so far as to say life changing! My faves at the mo: Happier with Gretchen Rubin, One Minute Mindfulness, The Wellness Guys, Stuff You Should Know, HBR Ideacast and Here’s the Thing with Alec Baldwin. Ima look up Call Your Girlfriend – sounds really sweet!

Isn’t it great? I know what you mean – I’ve started crocheting this year and it’s kind of replaced my reading so I listen to podcasts while I do it. Mr Smags and I went on a road trip and I crocheted while we listened to an audio book. The best! Call your girlfriend isn’t exactly sweet… it’s more sassy!

I call things I don’t understand ‘witchcraft ‘. Podcasts are included in this. I’ve never listened to one and don’t get how to do it!! Lol. I’m hardly a techno-phobe either!

Do you have an iPhone? Just type ‘witchcraft’ into the search bar… kidding! It’s just in the podcast app. Like iTunes. My mum even does it. I have faith in you.

I highly recommend the Satellite Sisters–5 real sisters gabbing about news, talk and laughs. They are fantastic.

My new fav … Death Sex & Money. I also quite like This American Life & Conversations with Richard Fidler (my absolute top pick is Paul Carter – I actually think there is 2 episodes with him and I could listen to them again and again). I also enjoyed Serial and have been listening to Undisclosed which is kind of a follow on. It is from a group of lawyers supporting Adnan and they review the details of case in depth. Sometimes it is a bit taxing to keep up with all the details but it is still has me going back each week to listen.

That’s my new favourite too after yesterday! Love it! I was listening to Undisclosed but it’s just not as listenable. I got bored. ๐Ÿ™

Another vote here for Conversations with Richard Fidler! Sometimes it comes on the radio when I’m in the car, and I can’t get out of the car until it’s finished, even if it’s someone I’ve never heard of before. There was a recent one with Julia Zemiro (and Ellen Fanning – Richard was on holiday) that I really enjoyed.

In fact ABC have a lot of great podcasts (First Dog on the Moon, TGIF, Soundproof, Self-Improvement Wednesday, The Minefield). I’m an old person though and usually listen to the actual radio ๐Ÿ™‚

For new music I used to like KEXP Song of the Day, Stereogum, and Triple J new music – I’d wait until I had about ten or twenty songs, listen to them all on my commute, and save the ones I wanted to keep. I’ve discovered a couple of my favourite bands this way! Also a lot of bands I never want to hear again, but the sheer volume and wide variety means a low hit rate is still worthwhile. KEXP in particular has an enormous archive.

And if you like quizzes then Podquiz is the utter bomb. I’m a trivia fiend and I love it.

Story Club, Chat 10 & have just discovered The Mitchen, which sounds promising.

Love this list! Downloading furiously as we speak! Totally agree re Undisclosed. Yawn. Meshel Laurie’s Nitty Gritty Committee is fantastic! Really thought provoking. I also enjoyed Criminal but they don’t produce many eps.

Doctor Karl (on Triple J) is always on my podcast list.
I’ve also recently been listening to Rum, Rebels and Ratbags, which is a factual and yet often funny look at the first 50 or so years of European settlement in Australia.

Too many to list but my favorites are Stuff You Missed in History Class, The Moth, Lore, Cracked, and This American Life. I also devour anything related to Serial…(I heard a rumor about the one coming up) and A Cast of Kings (Game of Thrones) Love the suggestions, great topic Carly!

I know I’m replying late but I only just found this site! Extra Hot Great and Pop Culture Happy Hour are good for the pop culture side of things, Answer Me This and Good Job Brain for trivia, Story Collider is short personal stories about science, Witness / Sporting Witness (BBC) are personal stories from history

Ah I just found this! I think someone needs to make these in to a list. Nice and neat ๐Ÿ™‚ I am kind of addicted to all things Jack Rabbit FM right now particularly Sweet Teen Club (I feel you girls are my spirit animals).
