How To Wear A Summer Dress In Winter

How To Wear A Summer Dress In Winter

I

pretty much always wear dresses because pants are weird on me. I just wasn’t built to be a trouser gal. So I have an enormous collection of dresses that I wear pretty much all year round. There’s a bit of fine art to wearing summer dresses in winter and not all summer dresses are appropriate so here’s my 101 on how to wear a summer dress in winter…

how to wear a summer dress in winter

Dress from Melko Melbourne
Boots from Merchant Melbourne
Wrap cardigan from Zhai Singapore
Tights from Kathmandu
Rings from Rose St Artists Markets, Byron Bay and Thailand
Earrings from Thailand, coin necklace from my grandfather

Tips

* Wear the warmest tights you can get. These are merino tights and they’re super toasty! They’re just from Kathmandu and I bought on them on sale for $60. I originally bought them for camping but I’ve been wearing them in real life too because they’re so comfy and warm.

* Dress in layers. I have a thermal top on underneath my dress, as well as my standard shape wear slip dress. Super warm and toasty!

* Go hard core on warm socks. If my feet are cold, my whole body is cold. I love stealing Mr Smaggle’s explorer socks and I fully intend on buying some of my own some day… for real.

Great outfit Carly! I like to layer in winter, but usually wear a warmer knit dress. That way my summer dresses are like a little surprise when I switch around my wardrobe at change of season. xx

So glad I’m not the only one who does this!!! I bought the most amazing black thermal top from UNIQLO this time last year and wear it under EVERYTHING!! I also layer with tights and boots and chunky cardigans…
Absolutely adore your wrap cardi – I’ve been looking for one just like that for so long!!

Oh my god these wrap cardigans are the best! I have one in black and one in blue. I wear them nearly every day. So good.

  4. Love this outfit! Black and white seems to be really in again this year!

Thank you! I’ve always been a fab of the old black and white! x

I just always feel weird in jeans. Like I’m pretending to be someone else. I have emotional issues with jeans. 🙂

my white summer beach frock makes a regular winter appearance – tights and wedge boots, with a long sleeve grey thermal and my fave leather jacket. Perfect balance of sweet and salty.

Carly, your rocking that summer dress. I love wearing dresses in the winter because it’s comfortable and I feel feminine.

Definitely! Tights are so comfy and if you whack a dress over the top it feels like you’re wearing pyjamas.

Yep same. I never wear trousers (only for exercise) so I wear summer dresses all year round too!

Me too! I pretty much only wear yoga pants and only to the gym.

I’m the same as you with the cold feet = cold body. I have really woolly and warm bed socks I wear during winter at home and I’ve even worn them with boots when I’ve gone out at night during winter too (no one can see your socks when you’re wearing boots).

Oh I’m in the process of crocheting myself some yummy socks! I want to get the pattern right though so I can wear them in shoes!

I totally do, but then I also currently live in Queensland where winter is about one month of the year.

Darn your little pop up ‘next post’ thingy. I can’t stop reading and I’m meant to be doing many, many other things. And now I just wanted to say that we are SO similar – I’m a dress girl myself and always have been. I’ll wear the same thing year ’round but with layers. x

PS – Don’t fret, though similar, you are much, much cooler and cuter than me. Just sayin’.

I’ve been wearing more dresses since moving to Melbourne a couple of months ago. They just feel more appropriate here. Have you seen the 3/4 sleeved striped dresses from Uniqlo? I’ve been living in them since I got them, and they look awesome with tights. Plus they have pockets and are only $30. I just saw they’ve got new patterns, and I so want to go back and get another one. But it seems a bit frivolous. You should definitely get some of your own explorer socks. Ladies explorer socks are the bomb and come in colours like pink and stripey patterns.

Lol I don’t have leggings or boots and I’m 13, sooooooooo… I can’t buy any. Should I just wear it and freeze or wear jeans?
