How To Fool Yourself Into Being A Morning Person

How To Fool Yourself Into Being A Morning Person

I

’m not a morning person but I’m not necessarily a non-morning person either. Basically I’m not naturally chipper  in the morning but I’m getting pretty darned good at faking it. This week I’ve started a few health challenges for September and one of them includes going screen free at 9pm. It’s all part of my plan to manipulate my own brain into thinking I’m a morning person. These are a few things I do to make sure I remain as pleasant as possible in the early hours of the day… here’s how I fool myself into being a morning person.

Avoid using your phone for the first hour after you wake up

I’ve totally banned my phone from the bedroom. I set my alarm and leave my phone in the lounge room to force myself to get out of bed to turn it off. I’m not allowed to bring my phone back to bed with me, otherwise I waste the first 20 minutes of my day mindlessly scrolling through Facebook. I usually re-set my alarm and have another ten minute snooze, then I get up properly. A person who is happy to see the start of a new day, won’t waste the first 20 minutes of the day stuffing around on Facebook. Don’t let your phone steal your morning.

Turn on the lights and open the blinds the moment you wake up

When I first get up to turn my alarm off, I do a quick spin around the lounge room, opening the blinds and turning on the lights. Then I have my ten minute snooze, which isn’t a deep sleep because it’s too bright to doze off completely. After ten minutes, I feel right as rain to get up and start the day. If your house is dark and cozy in the morning it makes it very difficult to get out of bed. Don’t make your morning leap out of bed harder than it needs to be. When your alarm goes off, the lights go on. That’s the rule.

Actually go to bed early

Even if you’re not that tired, if you go to bed as early as possible it will make you much brighter in the morning. I used to wait until I was falling asleep on the couch before I went to bed but now I always go to bed at a designated time and read until I fall asleep. I try to get 8 hours of bed time overnight. That doesn’t always equal 8 hours of sleep time but at least I know I’ve sufficiently rested enough if I’m in bed for that amount of time. Choose the hours you’re going to spend in bed each night – I usually do midnight to 8am – and stick to it. Your body will start figuring out pretty quickly that those are your rest hours.

Are you a morning person? Do you struggle to get out of bed? Or do you love the promise of a new day?

I am a morning person. Love seeing the sunrise (don’t worry, it doesn’t happen that often). However, i do believe that you never regret getting up and getting into the day (early or not) it makes me feel like I’ve achieved something. Even if nothing else happens.

Oh totally! If I get up early, I never regret it. Unless it’s like 4am and I have to go to the airport. That’ always crap. 🙂

I am totally a morning person – the only one in our family, which makes it frustrating when you have to all be up early to go somewhere. I am, however, not an afternoon person. All the appointments and important things must be scheduled as early as possible in the day or I am not interested (I’m talking about at home days not work days).I would never book a hair or dentist appointment for after lunch. I know, I’m a bit weird – I have never met anyone else who feels like this. xx

My dad is a morning person. Always woke up super cheerful – the rest of us not so much!

  3. I’m like you – a sort of morning person. I’m guilty of having my phone next to my bed, so I think I should put it in our ensuite instead. The first thing I do when I wake up is take Amalfi outside so he can tinkle and then we get back into bed and the 3 of us have a little cuddle sesh before I leave the 2 boys to snooze a little longer while I have a shower.

Morning snuggles are the best/worst. Mr Smaggle stays in bed later than me because he’s up a lot later and he’s always so warm and delicious… I can’t imagine how bad it must be adding a puppy to the equation!

I get up at 5am every day (have done this forever so now it’s just habit), but I’m not really a morning person in the sense that I want to talk to anyone that early. My partner doesn’t get out of bed until about 7am, which is after I’ve left for the office, so I get two hours to myself.

5am! What time do you go to sleep? I’m a moderate night owl so I’m usually in bed at 12 midnight on the dot.

  5. I would love to wake up at 8am! My issue is I don’t go to bed till about midnight, but I have to get up at 5am. Just this last week I’ve started to go to bed at 10pm and just lie there with my eyes shut and I’ll eventually fall asleep. It’s worked, as a couple of times hubby said that I’ve been asleep before 11pm, which is great.

I work for myself so I can afford to stay in bed a bit longer! I try to be in bed for 8 hours every night. It doesn’t always mean I’m sleeping but at least I’m in bed.

I am a night person. 10 am is still early for me. My friend and fitness trainer arrives around 9.15am to go walking and I am slowly starting to get used to it. I still prefer sleep ins and late nights. Working when it is quiet and I can concentrate

I love late nights but I feel gross if I sleep past 9am. It’s a very fine balance! 🙂

Im definitely not a morning person, but i wish i was! I think i need to adopt the screen free philosphy at night because playing on my phone in bed stops me getting to sleep and i never feel fully rested! Great tips ?

  9. So not a morning person, never have been, but having a toddler kind of forces you to be present for it. Luckily she does me a solid by generally sleeping until about 7.30!
