9 Signs That You’re Losing The Plot

9 Signs That You’re Losing The Plot

ike most people, I’m really busy. I rarely, if ever, sit down at the end of the day and think ‘Gee, I’m a bit bored! Wish I had something to do.‘ There’s ALWAYS something to do. Most of the time I feel like I manage my life quite well. I eat proper food, I exercise several times a week, I get a decent amount of sleep. Occasionally though I find myself in a weird state of disarray and I can’t quite figure out how I ended up like that. That’s where I am right now. I’ve been juggling lots of stuff and while it’s awesome, I’m definitely spreading myself a little bit too thin. I haven’t spent a full evening in my own house since August and I’ve had eggs for dinner 5 nights in a row. The full extent of my loss-of-the-plot hit me this morning when I realised I’d bought underwear twice in the last week because I haven’t had time to do my damn washing. Thankfully I have an evening or two off this week so I can do things like wash my hair, eat a vegetable and spend time with that guy I live with. He seems pretty cool. Here are a few of the warning signs that I shouldn’t have ignored a week ago…

losing the plot

9 Signs That You’re Losing The Plot

1. The only green thing you’ve eaten in the last week is a wasabi pea and you ate it accidentally.

2. There are more clothes in your dirty laundry basket than in your cupboard.

3. ‘Catching up’ with your friends has turned into a quick scan of their Facebook walls.

4. You have no idea what day of the week it is… or what month it is.

5. You haven’t laid eyes on the people you live with since last Tuesday.

6. You’re considering breaking your own leg because a short stay in hospital might be the only holiday you get this year.

7. ‘Cooking’ starts to include boiling eggs and making toast. ‘Fancy cooking’ includes heating up a handy pack of rice.

8. You’re fairly sure you’ve had a shower today… fairly sure.

9. You get really emotional when people make you cups of tea.

What happens to you when you’re losing the plot? What’s the first thing to give?

Research has shown that people who subscribe to the Smaggle newsletter and like Smags on Facebook are, on average at least 32% better looking than people who don’t. You can’t argue with questionable science like that.

The first thing to give is always home because work is too high stakes. No, I lie, the blog goes first. Then the housework. Then things like not wearing the same outfit every few days because you don’t have time to remember what other clothes you own.

I can’t feel back under control again until I have had a good sleep, the house is all clean (sometimes cleaning than it was before) and I’ve planned the week’s meals.

Oh totally my first thing to go is always my washing. Another sign I’m losing the plot is if my nails aren’t painted! True story.

I don’t have kids but I get irritable with life when I’ve had a lack of a sleep! Like today! zzzz!

I’m hearing you! I’ve had two less than average weeks with my husbo away/sick kids and then I got sick which knocked me out for the whole week on every level. The first thing to go is my cool/sanity and then time for exercise. I’ve managed to serve up a reasonable dinner most nights for the kids but I have not done anything else very well at at all. Onwards and upwards now though and will hoping to avoid another dip like that for some time! Hope you have a better, more restful week and that you find some balance. x

All so true! I have asked my husband several times to let me lie down in the driveway and drive the car over one of my legs but he won’t do it because he reckons he couldn’t stand the snapping sound. Sook!
I also have been teary when someone makes me a cup of tea. A very resonant post for me right now!

I’ve had three cups of tea made for me the last two days. It’s been very, very lovely. And Mr Smags makes me tea every day!

Yep… I have had to knock one thing back because it was one to many. My clean washing pile was gathering dust and I haven’t excercised in 2 weeks. Taking some time back for me (and chores).

I’ve actually been okay on my exercise but I’ve got chicken stew in my fridge that’s been there for at least 2 weeks. Eeeep!

Oh Lady Smaggle – this had me giggling. I have definitely Officially Lost The Plot, as several of these are now quite normal (chronic illness=redefining normal). I do try to keep the laundry done, even if it’s the only thing I manage to do.

And don’t under-estimate the skill required to boil an egg properly! Our girls have been laying like crazy, so eggs are definitely on the regular menu. Love me a soft boiled egg with buttered toast soldiers.

I’ve actually recently learned to poach eggs so I have to admit my egg making is a touch fancier than I’m letting on. I’m actually a gun at it now. I adore poached eggs!

Thank you! I will! It’s my birthday tomorrow so I’m slamming through my work today so I can have a relaxing day tomorrow!

  9. Mine is always food. I end up eating more fast food than normal and start to feel like shit because of way too much fast food. I wish I could have eggs on toast for dinner. My hubby thinks it not a real dinner, so only have it when he’s away.

Oh my lord eggs on toast is Mr Smaggle’s favourite! He always needs second dinner but he loves it. We put avocado on it – delish!

All so true! The first thing to slip for me is always sleep, which takes exercise/the gym down with it, and healthy eating follows soon after (with the man away, I ate an entire box of Arnotts Shapes for dinner because I couldn’t find anything to cook last week. Twice). A shower, healthy dinner and early bed always fixes things, no matter how counterintuitive it feels at the time.

Oh yes! I’ll do that tonight! The shower and early night I mean… not the shapes for dinner! 🙂

    • JessB 9 years ago

It must be something all Jessica’s do – I’ve eaten Shapes for dinner recently too! When they’re $4 for two boxes at Coles, who can resist…
But it is a sign something isn’t quite right, so this week I heroically resisted the siren call of Shapes, and went for whole food and proper meals. I made a great chicken, vegetable and pasta meal last night that is also lunch today and tomorrow – I just need to try and keep that up for dinner tonight!

When I start to spread myself thin you can see it written on my face literally – my skin will break out from stress. I will find myself snapping at the kids and the washing basket piles up.

Omg, my life right now. My house is in need of a scrub…and yeah the food thing is getting out of hand.

Glad it’s not just me who does the eggs as dinner thing although I often mix it up with cheese toasties. I have a truck driving hubby who is away all week and some days it’s the best I can manage! But my two toddlers don’t seem to mind as they eat awesomely well at child care (and quite frankly, I just don’t believe in mother guilt so if it works, I do it! This also applies to not giving kids daily baths!). I know, just call me Mother of the Year!

For me the first thing that goes is, the blog, cleaning and then sleep. I find this time of year before the lead up to Christmas life has a mini break-down and seems to re-align itself.

My house work goes down the toilet, I forget what day it is. My washing is everywhere and who can’t forget that pap smear you went a week early for. Yes I’ve lost the plot. Heating up your food in the microwave and forgetting to put your food in it in the first place. Lol my peeps, wait til you get to my age. Early 40’s..
