It’s Totally Okay To Not Know What You’re Doing

few weeks ago I posted an Ask Me Anything post because I often get asked questions on social media and the blog but sometimes they get buried if I don’t get the chance to answer them straight away. So I thought rather than make it seem like I’m a total snob I’d do an Ask Me Anything post to answer all your burning questions. Here are the next five questions in the list. There are a few people who seem a bit lost in Smaggle land at the moment so there’s a lot of stuff about finding your direction in life in this one. Oh and if you have any more questions ask away in the comments.

Kat – Ok, I am super intrigued with this one… I’ve been reading your blog for many years (to the Canberra era) and remember you moved to Melbourne to start a jewellery course. What happened afterwards (or during for that matter) that made you decide to not become a jeweller, or to go down the path you are currently on? Do you have any of your pieces?!
Also Carly – I miss you style posts. That was the original reason I started reading Smaggle – don’t worry, I love the site now ? But perhaps of more importance – beauty posts! Please do a few!

Oh how lovely of you to be reading for so long! Nothing ‘happened’ during my course to make me not pursue jewellery straight away – I finished my course and made a few bits and pieces but the blog started taking off and writing just kind of took the reigns in my life. I love making jewellery (always have!) and I’ll definitely come back to it, but right now blogging is my thing. I’ve still got lots of pieces I made. I also still have my tools and sometimes I’ll have a bit of a tinker around if I’m in the mood. I only have so many hours in the day and I have a theatre company and a blogging school as well so my calendar is definitely full.

As for outfit posts – the reason why I don’t really do as many outfit shots is because I’ve become a bit of a minimalist and I don’t have the wardrobe variety to support that kind of content anymore. But just for you, there will be an outfit post on the blog tomorrow. I keep getting requests for them so why the hell not? I do beauty posts whenever something inspires me in that department but it’s a been while since anything beauty related really knocked my socks off. I literally buy mascara at the supermarket. I do have a few new products I’m going to review though so stay tuned!

Hailz – How do you maintain and ‘make up’ your eyebrows?

Oh good one! I made a promise to myself a few years ago that I would never, ever pluck my own eyebrows again. I go to a lovely girl at Brazilica in Fitzroy and she’s brilliant. She waxes them into a geometric, bold kind of shape and then I groom them every day and fill them in with brow powder. I’ll do a video of it soon! I do care a lot about eyebrows… probably more than I should. I actually shaved one of my eyebrows in half when I was kid for no reason and it never recovered so I have to match them every day. The struggle is real.

Sonya291 – I’ve started a few websites and blogs and finding I’ve got probs a few too many…. !! and I also have a day job. Still new at all the blogging so wondering if I’ve got a can of worms that I maybe should pop the lid on.
So glad to be able to ask Q’s. Ps love your blogging too!

Thank you! You’re lovely! Yes that’s a HUGE issue. I only had one website for years and now I have two and it’s a BIG commitment. I recommend sticking to one for a while to get traction on it and then if you feel you have the gumption and the time, add another one. Blogging is a massive commitment and how people manage to have more than one blog at a time is beyond me.

Tara – How do you decide what your dream job is when you have been “looking and deciding” for years but have not come up with an answer? You want to live a life being of service to others with your gifts but you don’t know exactly how and what that “job” would look like?………..that’s a curly one for you.

Wow yes that is a curly one… I’d say to just let your actions dictate your decisions. For instance I kind of always wanted to be awesome at singing but I never made the effort to get really good at it. I always made the time for writing and acting but with singing, I somehow always managed to make an excuse not to do it. I figured it wasn’t my thing so I concentrated on the stuff I actually loved and gave time to. So figure out what you make time for and give it more time. I also think it’s totally okay to not know what you’re doing. If you just kind of meander in the right direction, things seem to work out quite well for most people.

Tracey – If you could speak to your 18 year old self, what advice would you give her?

‘Hey Carls, how you doing babe? This is future Carly. Here’s a few things you should know.

* That awesome group of people you’re so desperate to be friends with actually are very awesome and you’re still friends all of them now. Relax. They like you.
* Your boyfriend is gay. Awkward.
* No one achieves all their goals by the time they’re 18 so chill out.
* Those sugar-free lollies are going to make you shit yourself. Don’t eat them.
* You know that hot guy you saw in that play last week and you told your friend you’d bone him if you become single? Both of those things are about to happen and they’re excellent life choices.

Peace out.

I’m curious now… what would you tell your 18 year old self? Any huge warnings you had back then?

I had the “what do I do with my life” conversation (via facebook) with my sort-of-niece. And came to the same conclusion – most of us muddle along and it’s important to do things you care about, even if they aren’t how you make money.

And to my 18 year old self – hang in there, it will get better.

Definitely. I know that people I though totally had their shit together really don’t and it’s very comforting. I think it’s just lovely to have a positive attitude and just give it all a go and see what happens.

That’s a really hard question for me. I got pregnant under not the best circumstances when I was 20 so would I change that? I wouldn’t have my son if I did…

My general life advice would be — be yourself, if people don’t like it, that’s their issue not yours.

Yeah, that is a hard one – I’ve got friends who have similar things but I guess life just give you what you need sometimes. I love your life advice! Represent.
