Keeping It All Together When You’re Too Damn Busy

few weeks ago I put up a good old fashioned Ask Me Anything post. Honestly I’m a bit old school with my internet ways and the best way to get anything answered is to send me an email or comment on my blog. Facebook and Instagram comments get lost so quickly and I end up missing them. So I’m taking the time to answer every question I’ve been asked in this post – If you’ve got a burning question, ask away! This week there were a few questions about maintaining a busy life so the theme today is keeping it all together when you’re too damn busy!

Kate – What is your best tip for starting & maintaining new friendships?

To be perfectly honest, I’m quite rubbish at making new friends as a grown up. It’s not that I don’t want new friends, I’ve just been friends with same people for 15 years and I barely have time to see them so I get quite anxious when new people seem to start becoming a ‘thing’. I find new friendships form quite organically though and usually through doing something I love. I met one of my closest girlfriends 4 years ago when I auditioned for a show her theatre company was putting on. I think starting a new friendship is a bit like dating – you want to be your best self in the beginning and slowly drip feed your special brand of crazy out over time. A friendship that’s meant to be will love your weirdness and one that’s not will kind of slowly fade away.

Lisa – Hi Carly. If you won the lotto, how would your life change?

I honestly don’t think it would change much at all. I’d buy a 3 million dollar warehouse conversion home in Fitzroy with a rooftop garden but pretty much nothing else would change. I love my job: I did it for free for 6 six years! I’d probably throw in a bit more fancy travel to Europe and seasonal Marimekko purchases but apart from that, not much really!

Nathalie Brown – When can we have lunch date?

We need to make this a thing. I’ll email you.

Jessica – I’m a full time professional clairvoyant- I’m finding my biz demands are becoming overwhelming. How do you suggest a business woman construct her schedule while reaping the benefits of being your own boss and still maintaining balance.

I don’t know of any business woman who knows the answer to that. I’m currently writing this from the airport at 6am because I’ve just been to a conference and worked my fourth weekend in a row… when I promised myself I wouldn’t work weekends anymore! I think it’s important to be practical about how much time you do have, schedule down time for yourself but also be really honest about how much of your ‘work’ time you spend actually working. When I first started working for myself I just kind of dicked around on the internet not really doing much and then being super surprised that I wasn’t getting anything done. I’m now very strict about my schedule. I work from 9am to 9pm and then it’s screens down. I also go to the gym every day and unless I’m running a workshop or speaking at a conference I don’t work weekends. Research productivity methods and be really honest with yourself about what your weak areas are. I’m a huge fan of worker smarter, not harder.

Vanessa Harlow – Next March I will be visiting Melbourne for the first time with 2 girlfriends. I’d love your suggestions on where to stay, eat and play!! We want to pack as much as we can into 4 days. PS. Love your blog!

Oh how fun! I’d definitely do the National Gallery of Victoria, IMAX is always a blast, shopping on Brunswick Street and Gertrude Street, pizza on Lygon street, cake from Brunetti’s, authentic vietnamese food from Victoria Street in Richmond, cocktails at Madame Brussel’s, wine upstairs at Naked in the Sky (awesome views), go for a walk around the Botanic Gardens, have a picnic at Abbotsford Convent (they might even have the outdoor cinema happening!) and go and check out all the street graffiti in the city.

What about you? If you won the lottery, how would your life change? Would you quit your job? Move? What would be the first thing you would buy?

I’ve been dreaming about the “set for life” thing being advertised lately – $20k per month for 20 years. Can you even imagine?!

I would probably phase out my 9-5 job and work on building my own business up without the pressures of having to feed myself! I would definitely travel a lot more, I’d probably buy a house, fix up my wardrobe, pay of my parent’s mortgage, give my boyf money to invest in a new business idea, those sorts of nice things. The very first thing I’d buy though? Champagne to celebrate with!!

Oh yes! I’d crack open a HA-UGE bottle of Moet I think… I actually love how most people’s answers are similar. They’d just live their live as they do now without worrying about anything.

  2. If I won the lottery, without a doubt the first thing I would do would be to quit my day job. We’d FINALLY finish our renovations and pay off our mortgage. And then? Regular overseas holidays and being a little more generous than usual to our family and friends without people realising why. x

Oh I love how stealth you’re being with your riches – I think if I won the lottery everyone would know about it. I have such a big mouth. But totally – I’d go nuts on travel. I’d be in Paris, New York, Denmark and Tokyo stat.

  3. I love awarding myself an imaginary amount of cash money and then parcelling it all off. We’d buy a new house in roughly the same area but maybe a touch closer to the city and with a killer view. I’d hand out equal amounts of cash presents to family members. Maybe a little beachside holiday house. I’d probs work just to have something to do. Invest in something solid to keep long-term bucks coming in and set up for the future. A bit of first class travel. I’d consider sending my daughter to private school if I was satisfied we found the right one. Some charitable giving. If we’re talking super mega ridic maybe I’d pay a local designer to collaborate with me and produce a fashion or jewellery line, self-fund an album and start work on Almost Posh – The Musical!

I would always work. I can’t image not working. My dad keeps talking about retiring and I just can’t see him doing that. Is Jacobs love to keep ourselves busy.
