How To Rock A Grandpa Cardigan Like A Boss

y fashion sense is all over the shop. I once had a reader describe my style as Minimalist Nimbin Monochrome Gypsy and I think she totally nailed it. There’s a weird ordered chaos in the way I dress – it’s 80% predictable and 20% ‘What the hell???’. I realised long ago that I would never look neat and tidy like Audrey Hepburn so I embrace my permanent state of looking a little bit like I crawled out from under a rock.

Curly haired girls never look totally pulled together and I quite like that – it means I have a bit more freedom with my style. When I first started Smaggle I used to wear a lot of thrifted clothing but I honestly haven’t had the time to go op-shopping in ages. The other day Mr Smaggle and I went on a picnic and I found an epic second hand store on the way to the park. Someone had cleared their cupboards of these great 100% cotton grandpa style cardigans and I snapped them up. I ended up with three of them and I’ve been wearing them to death. They’re perfect for the weird Melbourne weather at the moment and they’re super useful for taking on planes to drape over my legs when I have a snooze… you know so the person sitting next to me doesn’t see my undies if I relax too much in my dress.

This outfit was worn for a day at the Smaggle office working with Secret Blogger’s Business. We have an afternoon tradition of getting what we’ve dubbed a ‘Million Dollar Smoothie’. Basically we buy the smoothie, then we wander around drinking it and coming up with ways to make a million dollars because the smoothies are like $9 each and we need to be millionaires to be able to afford to buy them because that’s how maths works.

  1. Ohhh, so I need curly hair to pull off a Vinnie’s Grandpa sweater 😉 I always end up looking more daggy than stylish. And yes, crazy keen on your Brissie workshop, but sadly cash poor, so will avoid the ‘million dollar smoothies’ and save my pennies for next time.

Totally. It also works if you have perfect rich girl hair – then you look like you’ve thrown your boyfriend’s cardigan on for a romantic weekend getaway. I’m sure we’ll do another Brissy workshop next year – this one totally sold out it’s awesome!

Great find! Sometimes op shops are a goldmine of great stuff. Love a cardy – tend to wear shorter fitted ones in jewel colours. But cardy days are over for this year – way too warm now. Funny, I put something on the other day and thought “that looks a bit grandma” and took it off. I realise I am a grandma, but the g word is banned in this house. I was allowed to choose and I chose Mimi. Xx

I have a friend who’s mother is Mimi! My mum is Nan… it’s just what ended up happening. It’s definitely still cardigan weather here in Melbourne! But only in the morning and then it gets all stuffy and horrifically hot!

Love large cardigans, also men’s jumpers and brogues. AND the knitted silk scarves that were worn with evening dress.

Oh that sounds gorgeous! I’ve just ordered a beautiful book online that’s modern interpretations of vintage crochet patterns! I can’t wait for next winter!

  4. Yes, girl! I am sitting here today in an op shopped dance skirt (I left the accompanying boofy tulle petticoat off though). I love vintage dresses because the shapes are flattering on my bod and sensible court shoes.

I just bought some lovely court shoes for the two weddings I’m in this year! I can’t wait to wear them in!
