uite recently I switched from using Wunderlist to Asana. If you’re not a total productivity geek like me you probably have no idea what either of these things are but don’t stress. It’s not important to this story.

A freelance mate of mine reads Smaggle as if it’s her bible. It’s probably because it’s the only blog she reads so it gives her this weird illusion that I’m the boss of the world. That’s totally fine by me. The world where I’m the boss rocks. She’s a smart gal.

Anyway I’d recommended Wunderlist to my readers not long ago and yesterday she caught me using Asana.

She walked passed by desk, pointed at my screen and yelled ‘What the actual f*ck is that???’

(That’s just the way we talk to each other… you’ll get used to it.)

‘Asana – it’s my new management system.’

‘FFS! I JUST got used to Wunderlist and now I have to swap???’

This friend of mine is rather alarmist.

This whole interaction got me thinking about how obsessed people are by finding The Perfect Thing. Their whole life will be totally sorted once they find The Perfect Calendar, The Perfect Diary, The Perfection Storage System, The Perfect Lunchbox and The Perfect Pair Of Going Out Shoes. We spend so much time and research seeking out Perfect Things. So when we finally pick a Thing, we convince ourselves it’s The Perfect Thing because we spent so much time/effort/money to find it.

It’s such a major flaw in human psyche.

If you try a flavour of yogurt and you don’t like it, you can try another one. If you try a flavour of yogurt and you DO like it, you can still try another one. The new flavour of yogurt doesn’t change your enjoyment of or disappointment in the first flavour. The new flavour of yogurt also doesn’t forbid you from going back and having the first flavour again. You can also have BOTH flavours of yogurt at the same time.

There’s so much stuff in the world there’s really no need to limit ourselves, with anything. What we order at restaurants, our friends, the type of television we watch, what exercise classes we go to, how we take our coffee and the kind of romantic partners we date.

It’s totally okay to try something else… and something else again. You can even go way back to the first thing you ever tried, because there’s no such thing as perfect.

Do you get fixated on stuff being perfect? Or always having the best Thing? Or are you cool to chop and change and go with the flow?

I’m really liking it! I use it in conjunction with my pen and paper daily list – I can’t quite kick that habit!

Mostly I go with the flow and love trying new things. Until they become part of my self definition. Then I cling even when I know it’s not working anymore.

Oh my lord me too! If I have a thing that becomes a signature I stick to it. Like my damn skim cappucinos. It’s such an 80s order but I just can’t kick it.
