How To Wear A Weird Dress And Not Give A Toss

How To Wear A Weird Dress And Not Give A Toss

ersonal style is a bit bizarre. When I was in my early 20s, I wore a lot of lace and pink – very Alannah Hill. Then I went through a very monochrome, almost grungy phase – think Rick Owens. I’m moving in to a new phase of style now that’s more structural and minimalistic – like Yohji Yamamoto. Someone commented the other day that they miss my lacey, girly outfits from the early 2000s but I don’t miss them. I loved that phase and I’ll always have a soft spot for lace but I think the way you dress reflects who you are and where you’re going. I don’t think I’m done with pink and lace but right now I’m all about clean lines and minimalism.

Wearing

Dress from COS

Shoes from TOMS

Coin necklace from my grandfather

Rings and earrings from Thailand, Bali and Byron Bay

This dress is like a weird cocoon and when I tried it on in the store, another customer said it looked terrible. How rude right? I kind of bought it just to show her she wasn’t the boss of me. The first day I wore it, I received three separate compliments on it. I really love the way this dress makes me feel – like I own an art gallery in Manhattan and I have a dog Winifred and I only drink whisky that’s aged 100 years or more.

Do you have any weird items of clothing you love but you have to talk yourself into wearing?

That’s what I thought! I can even eat a giant sandwich and no can see my bloat gut! 🙂

I used to wear lots of “old lady dresses” from the op shop well before granny coture was a thing. It took the kind of confident arrogance that 20 somethings seem to possess in spades. Looking back now, I looked ridiculous a lot of the time. LOL.

I actually recently bought a chunky ugly old lady cardigan and I love it. It’s very much not my style but I’ve been wearing it everywhere and getting heaps of compliments. I do believe it’s my confidence in my poor fashion choice that is helping me pull it off. 🙂

I love that dress! I’m all about trying to embrace the quirks right now, but it can be hard with society on your back about conforming!

Totally! Honestly I’ve never really been one to conform but I get annoyed when people judge other people on their fashion choices. I once went to a fashion event where this awesome lady was wearing a unitard. She looked incredible but people were still rolling their eyes at her. It’s bizarre.

I love clothes that are comfortable. the vast majority of my wardrobe is pre loved so gawd knows who designed them but one of my favourites is a new op shop find- a red mod cloth dress with a backgammon design around the hem- so funky!

I say wear anything that makes you feel like you own an art gallery in Manhattan, have a dog names Winifred and only drink whisky that’s aged 100 years or more.

I do feel like that should be my new life motto. I have now obsessed myself with having a dog named Winifred. I’m feeling pug yes?

love it. People should keep opinions like that to themselves, thanks very much! Love a bit of structure – Viv Westwood-style pleating a favourite with me at the moment. Doesn’t always work but I like playing around with it.

I adore Vivienne Westwood. I’ve never not loved one of her collections. Not everything would suit me but I love how different but still the same she with every collection.

  8. Art gallery owner was the exact thought that popped into my head, no kidding. Beautiful. x

Hamptons cocktail party was what I thought when I saw this outfit, just be careful and don’t go spilling any mimosa’s on that dress!

At this point I honestly don’t give a rats about how people react to what I’m wearing because there will always be one idiot who insists on having something to say about my appearance. I wore 50s looks for five years and now I’ve moved onto the 20s, if someone is being really intrusive and starts asking me “why” I’m dressed the way I am I just tell them I’m going to a costume party. Much easier than getting into an argument and explaining a) that it’s actually not any of their business why an individual chooses to dress a certain way, and b) I can wear whatever I want!

Isn’t it strange when people ask why you’re dressed that way? I’d be like… because it’s awesome! There’s a lady who lives near me who dresses in full edwardian style clothes and she look incredible. I know she’s not going to a costume party and I always smile at her but if she’s in a cafe there’s always people staring at her and making weird faces at each other over what she’s wearing. It drives me bonkers.

      • Harlow 8 years ago

Ahh that sounds amazing – the Edwardian era is probably not one I could do because then people would really lose it (I live in Brisbane after all…) but jeeze, I wonder if that lady has instagram/a blog because I would love to follow her! The behavior you just described her getting in a cafe is pretty typical…I was taught as a child it was rude to stare and point, pity others were not! She sure has balls for putting herself out there and rocking those clothes like no one is staring/making faces at each other.

Firstly I love COS they make great clothes.
Secondly this weird cocoon dress is awesome and thirdly that customer was very rude indeed.

I love the dress and it looks awesome with how you’ve styled your hair too. You definitely look like you own an art gallery in Manhattan 😛

I thought she was a bit mean! I adore COS I cannot get enough of their clothes – and thank you! I’m rather fond of my latest hair cut. I think I’ve finally found a hairdresser who gets my hair! At last!

I think you look fabulous. Loving your blog too so inspiring.

I love that dress on you! Sadly, this isn’t the sort of shape that would flatter mine, but I think you rock this to hell and back! In fact, I totally get the Manhattan art gallery-owner vibe. You could also throw on some Iris Apfel-style African jewellry and rock with wacky, international art matron/patron vibe. You could do so much with this. LOVE IT!
