9 Ways To Get Yourself Out A Funk

You know how sometimes how you just feel a bit low for no real reason? You’re definitely not depressed, you’re not sad about anything in particular, you just feel a bit shit. I felt like that in the first week of this year. I’d been eating and drinking too much, not getting enough sleep, travelling way too much and not getting anywhere near enough rest. I was in a funk which I have now thankfully pulled myself out of. Here are 9 ways you can make little changes to get yourself out of a funk… if you happen to be in one. If you’re not then as you were…

9 ways to get yourself out of a funk

1. Give yourself a mini health review

Have a look at your current habits – are you eating well? Sleeping enough? Having a few nights off alcohol every week? Are you moving enough? I know it’s super obvious but I knew the reason why I was feeling so low over the Christmas break was because I was eating far too many bread-based meals, not doing any formal exercising and raising my heart like I usually do every day and drinking alcohol most nights. It’s fun to do these things for a while but it doesn’t take long for this kind of stuff to catch up on you. Christmas and New Year are over now so it’s time to turn up the salads and get sweating.

2. Make something

Your bed, some muffins, gift cards, homemade bath bombs. Idle hands do the devils work so if you keep your hands busy it will stop you from finding destructive ways to deal with your funk. You’ll also have something awesome to show for your work.

3. Hang around people who make you feel good

When I got back from my Christmas break, I felt so peopled out that I just couldn’t bear the thought of hanging out with anyone. So when one of my good mates invited me out for a drink I was a bit reluctant to go. I’m so glad I did go because I felt fantastic afterwards – She’s a very positive person and I always feel great after hanging out with her even if I’m a bit tired and run down. You may not feel like seeing people but if you see the right people, it will help get you on track to being funk-less.

4. Notice when you get lucky

I’ve tried to keep a gratitude journal so many times but I just can’t commit to it. I do, however, like to be thankful whenever I notice that I’ve been a bit lucky. Like if a stranger gives me their parking ticket or I get a beer at a restaurant that is super, super icy cold. You don’t have to do anything when you get lucky, just acknowledge it – say to yourself ‘That was an awesome thing that just happened.’ and repeat as necessary.

5. Take notes on the last time you felt really, really good

If you look back on your life you’ll notice that there were times when you were on top of your game. What were you doing in those times that made you feel so great? Bootcamp? 8.30pm bedtime? Playing mixed netball once a week? We are constantly searching for the cause of our unhappiness but we rarely look at the causes of our happiness. What were you doing the last time you felt amazing? Getting weekly massages? Going booze free? Having lots of sex? Figure out what it was and do more of it.

6. Declutter

Anything and everything. Even just clearing out your bedside table drawers or handbag will make a huge difference in getting you out of your funk. Clean bed sheets are also an amazing mood lifter.

7. Make a small goal and stick to

I always get in my biggest funks when I’m on holidays and I really hate it. The reason why is because I feel unproductive and lazy which is the whole point of a holiday in the first place. When I’m on holiday I set myself small goals like eating vegetables at every meal or nailing an extra few thousand steps every day. The satisfaction of goal completion is the perfect thing to get you back on track.

8. Do something that scares you

If you’re in a funk, it’s highly likely that one of the causes is boredom. If you constantly do the same things day in day out, it’s no wonder you feel a bit flat. This week try something new. Maybe go to a singles night or try an exercise class you’ve been curious about. Sometimes when I’m in a funk I like to catch up with people I don’t see very often just for something different. It’s always a good idea to mix things up and it’s the perfect thing to break a funk.

9. Stop complaining

It can be really easy to fall into a pattern of complaining all the time but the worst thing about doing this is those complaining breeds complaints and before you know it you’re not satisfied by anything anymore. If you get a cup of lukewarm coffee, try just drinking it and not saying anything. It won’t be the last coffee you ever have and it will only be worse if you make a fuss. I’m certainly not suggesting that you become a doormat but if your weird uncle keeps posting annoying status updates on Facebook don’t complain about it. Just unfollow and get on with it.

I’m suffering from the “I go back to work tomorrow after 5-weeks off” funk. I’m making my desk neat and organising my stationery to help lift my mood. Adding fresh flowers to the house too.

Oh that’s the worst! I’m actually quite looking forward to everyone coming back to work – I’ve been back since Jan it’s hard to get stuff done when everyone else is on holidays!

It’s always so hard to get your head in the game at the beginning of the year especially when you work for yourself!

In a total holiday funk! So I made my bed, did some washing and painted a fence. Seriously, who knew painting was so therapeutic. Thanks for the fab article. Bron

This is a biggie for me as I seem to be in a constant funk of late. I do whinge more than I should and am prone to wallowing but I usually try to dig myself out. I also try to remind myself of the good stuff but it’s hard if you’re feeling really low.

I’ve noticed recently I get pretty bad a week or so before my period – fall in a huge heap for no real reason… and think this is worse now I’m of a certain age!!!

It’s good to admit that though! Some people just whinge and wallow and don’t even realise they’re doing it! It’s my period week this week too and it always drags me down a bit!

So many great suggestions! Towards the end of last year I was really struggling with being in a funk. I was having major problems with my health which was affecting me mentally. I really wanted to start the new year in a positive way, so have been trying to concentrate on things that bring me joy.
    Small things like:
Being outdoors more (working in a windowless office for 8 hours a day can drain your soul)
Reading more books (an escape without being mindless on the couch)
Getting more sleep (even if it means getting ready for bed at 8:30pm!)
Making the most of my hobby – photography (loving every minute of it so far this year)
It was just a matter of finding things that put a smile on my face and forced me to slow down, drop my shoulders and enjoy the moment. I’ve even bought myself an adult colouring book!
Here’s to a great 2016 and I hope your funk will vanish soon enough x

Oh a windowless office! That’s awful – my house only had one inward facing window so we need to get outside a lot to compensate for it. Here’s to a funk-less 2016!

I love all of these tips Carly.
For me the “De-clutter” one works a treat.
Whenever I’m in a funk i have a massive spring clean and for some reason it just makes me feel so much better!

I did that this week! I cleaned out my horrible desk corner that was covered in products and crap. I feel like a whole new woman!
