17 Bloody Brilliant Comedy Movies You Should Totally Watch Again

Sometimes on a Friday night I just want to put on a movie I’ve already seen, just so I don’t have to use my brain anymore. The trouble is, it’s hard to just randomly think of movies. I have a running list in my phone of movies I want to re-watch and I think it’s pretty top-notch if I do say so myself. Here are my suggestions for perfect movies to re-watch while crafting/giving yourself a manicure/pinteresting…

movies you should watch

1. Bridesmaids

Kristen Wiig is a genius and this whole movie is worth it alone for Maya Rudolph shitting in the street in her wedding dress.

2. Hot Fuzz

If Nick Frost asked me to marry him, I’d probably say yes… and invite Mr Smaggle to the wedding.

3. There’s Something About Mary

This movie just never gets old. Neither does jizz hair or Ben Stiller getting his nuts stuck in his zipper.

4. Napoleon Dynamite

There are too many brilliant moments in this movie but I still think my favourite is ‘You could build her a cake?’

5. Ted

I know he’s controversial and we’re all supposed to hate him but I love Seth Macfarlane. I also love Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis and Giovanni Ribisi. This one’s a winner.

6. Shaun of The Dead

If you haven’t watched this you simply must. It has 90% of my favourite British comedians in it. For real.

7. Hello Ladies

This is a sneaky one and you need to watch the series first but this is Steven Merchant’s movie length finale for his show Hello Ladies. It’s one of the most adorable and hilarious romantic comedies I’ve ever seen. Firm favourite.

8. Waiting For Guffman

If you’ve ever done community theatre, you need to watch this movie. Plus it has Parker Posey in it and she’s just a bundle of awesome in everything.

9. BASEketball

Honestly, I haven’t watched this since the 90s and I’m hoping it holds up but Trey Parker and Matt Stone are usually very solid. I think I’m putting this one at the top of my weekend must watch list.

10. A Fish Called Wanda

I didn’t realise this movie was that hilarious until I re-watched it as an adult and it is such a hidden gem. Excellent, excellent gags. Get on it.

11. Toy Story

It’s just delightful. Enough said.

12. The Castle

I love how every time I watch The Castle I notice something else totally hilarious that missed the last time. My recent discovering was ‘You know Jenny? Not Jen-ny Jenny, Microwave Jenny.’ – Australian humour at it’s finest.

13. Team America

As a huge fan of Rent, I will never think Everyone Has Aids isn’t funny.

14. Bridget Jones’ Diary

I have seen this movie dozens of times and I still laugh at ‘Fitzherbert – Tits Per-vert.’

15. Juno

Ellen Page just nailed it in this movie. While we’re here I’d like to thank Diablo Cody for the phrase ‘Honest to blog?’

16. Ace Ventura

This popped up on the TV the other day but I didn’t have time to watch so I watched it a few days later and it still holds up. Jim Carrey can truly stand the test of time.

17. Honey I Shrunk The Kids

Another oldie but a goodie this one always delivers. Especially when the kids make friends with the ants. I want an ant friend.

Which movies are on your re-watch list? Do you think I missed any?

I’m in these places too – Facebook, Twitter, Bloglovin, Instagram, Youtube and the Smaggle weekly newsletter – you should follow me because I told you to.

Waiting for Guffman is deadset one of my faves ever – I could quote from that thing all day. “Let’s just say I understand what the Kennedys must go through.” Bring it On is another crowd-pleaser at my house – “that’s not spirit fingers. THIS is spirit fingers” etc, etc. Also, it’s not billed as a comedy but GI Jane is awesome – Viggo Mortensen? Short shorts? Booya Master Chief!

Oh how good is it? I hadn’t watch it until a theatre director friend of mine made me and it was spectacular! I love Bring It On. Mr Smags even likes it when I put it on!

Great list – some I’ve not heard of, so will have to check out. I love to rewatch movie adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of being Ernest and An Ideal husband. Different kind of humour to what we see now, but fabulously clever and witty. Rupert Everett is in both (nuff said) – oh and Dame Judi is in The Importance of being Ernest. Lesser known Aussie movies I love are The Dish and Crackerjack, both with such great Aussie humour and actors. I predict some movie time for me this weekend. Xx

I adore Rupert Everett – he was recently in an episode of Black Mirror and he was amazing. Had a flawless Australian accent it was incredible.

Cool Runnings, How Stella Got Her Grove Back (yes, I have always wanted to go to Jamaica) and Night at the Roxbury.

Oh yes Cool Runnings! ‘I have pride! I have power!’

Great list – don’t forget that BASEketball only starred Matt and Trey and wasn’t directed/written by them – you could check out Cannibal the Musical instead and Orgazmo – but they aren’t top 17 list material.

Ah I didn’t know that – that explains it wasn’t AS funny as the stuff that’s created by them. I have seen Orgazmo – it’s very funny.

Juno is one of my favourite movies to rewatch! So many good quotes… for some reason I use “Shoulda gone to China” a lot. And “Yo yo yiggety yo” (which is TERRIBLE, ha). And “Ow, ow, fuckity-ow”. Sometimes it’s bizarre the things that stick in your head?

Yes! I always think about the boyfriend’s pie balls.

I will never, ever say no if someone suggests rewatching Wet Hot American Summer.

I haven’t watched the movie but I’ve watched the show I didn’t love it but I have heard the movie is very cool. Will get on it!

Clueless! Definitely. It’s a classic, especially if you consider the Jane Austen slant – although I don’t think Ms Austen ever described anyone as a virgin who can’t drive…
Also Mallrats is one I can always come back to and gets me giggling every time.

Literally just watched it last night for Sweet Teen Club Podcast! Can’t wait to record out next episode.

I love “Bringing down the House” with Steve Martin and Queen Latifa. My daughter and I often quote lines out of this movie, as you do!

Oh I haven’t seen that one! I’ll add it to my list.

A long term love of both TV series Spaced and Black Books may have driven both my husband and myself to be serial watchers of Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead. Everytime one of us goes to the shops we request a Cornetto (it has to be said in the right accent though!) I have made my kids watch Ace Ventura and Napoleon Dynamite until they could quote it, it may be considered bad parenting, but I simply couldn’t care less. My 8 year old daughter & 10 year old son also have the humour of a 15 year old boy and think Adam Sandler is a comic genius, therefore some of his more family-ish movies are played in our house (Wedding Singer, Grown ups, 50 first dates).
I still love watching old epsiodes of Ab-Fab, and Kath & Kim. I just put them on and do whatever I need to do. They are virtually guaranteed to make me laugh regardless of how may times I have seen them.

I love The Wedding Singer! It’s such a cute movie. Yes Ab Fab is amazing! I want to be Eddie when I grow up.

OMG – I forgot about Joe Dirt!!! I cant believe I forgot it! One of my all time favourites!!

I don’t think I’ve ever actually seen Joe Dirt – must add it to the list.

Hi, great list! If you’re looking for offbeat comedy done right try ‘So I Married an Axe Murderer’

Juno is great. I used to own it, but I’m not sure where it ran off too. The one I think really holds up well to re-watching is Clue. I think I can recite entire scenes from this movie and it will never get old.
