7 Things you Didn’t Know About the Movie Heathers

onfession: I only watched this movie for the first time in the last few years. I’d heard about it but for some reason I was too busy watching Empire Records for the fortieth time to give a few hours to this 90s classic.

Honestly, it doesn’t stand the test of time. It’s still good but it’s not great. Aside from the awesome one liners and Christian Slater’s amazing hair, the plot is a bit thin and the whole thing is quite confusing but it’s still a classic piece of cinema that deserves to be held in high esteem. Here are 7 Things you didn’t know about the movie Heathers to give you a quick run down before you listen to our podcast about it…

1. Brad Pitt auditioned for the part of JD but was considered too ‘nice’ for the part. Fair enough. He is an angel.

2. Kim Walker who played Heather Chandler, who said ‘Did you have a brain tumour for breakfast?’, actually died of a brain tumour in 2001.

3. Jeremy Applegate who plays Peter Dawson, the character who prays he will never commit suicide, actually did commit suicide in 2000.

4. Heather Graham was offered the role of Heather McNamara but her parents said no because they said the movie was too dark.

5. The band the Veronicas named themselves after the line Winona Ryder says ‘I’m not a Heather I’m a Veronica’.

6. Jennifer Connelly was offered the part of Veronica but turned it down.

7. Drew Barrymore auditioned for a part in the movie but was denied.

And yes, this week on Sweet Teen Club, we are discussing the very excellent and extremely weird movie Heathers. We talk about emos, teenagers, Winona Ryder, how sorry we are that we said Christine Slater isn’t hot because he quite plainly is and how hard it is to be a teenager.

Heathers was one of my favourites as a teen, mainly because Winona was my girl, she could do no wrong in my eyes. I watched it a few months ago & realised how messed it was but I still like it. And yes, Christian is a total hottie in it.

It’s totally messed up! I also adore Winona. I still think she’s insanely talented and beautiful. I’m fanging for a Winona career comeback.
