Why you Need to put your Damn Phone Down

his is a fairly new concept and something that only just recently came to my attention but very few people these days have non-electronic or screen-free hobbies. If you think about the way people spent their leisure time 100 years ago it was doing things like needlepoint, knitting, playing tennis, playing chess or playing cards. These hobbies aren’t practiced anywhere near as much they used to be and frankly I think it’s very sad.

It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of crochet and card playing so this week on Straight and Curly, Kelly and I are talking about the beauty of screen-free or non-electronic hobbies.

You can find this week’s episode about all things knitting, netball, chess and choir on Straight and Curly – a podcast for self improvement junkies. Each week we try a life hack like eating 5 cups of vegetables every day or keeping a gratitude journal. Then we report on our findings and tell you whether you should try it or whether it’s a giant waste of your time.

If you don’t know how to listen to podcasts don’t fret – here are a few tips.

iPhone users

Open up the podcast app on your phone (it already lives there so you don’t need to download it) and search for Straight and Curly. Then hit subscribe and you’re good to go.

Android users

The same as iPhone users but you just use the Android podcast app.

Desktop users

You can listen to it while you work at your computer – just click this link here.

Or you can listen to it right here –

If you love the podcast, it would be totally ace if you left a review. It helps other self improvement junkies to find each other and then we can sit around and chat about productivity while drinking organic green tea and eating raw treats because that’s what self improvement junkies look like in my head.

Do you have any non-electronic or screen-free hobbies? I’d love to hear how you spend your time away from screens.

I’m in these places too – Facebook, Twitter, Bloglovin, Instagram, Youtube and the Smaggle weekly newsletter – you should follow me because I told you to.

  1. Enjoyed the post- a great reminder to put down the screen and participate in other parts of life. I love reading books, writing in my journals, and drawing (I am trying to make a habit of doing it more regularly). I find that blogging connects it all, a fun way to share with others. Oh, and when I go for walks, sometimes, I even leave my cell phone at home (gasp). 🙂

Shock horror! I’d like to leave my phone at home when I go for walks but it’s my chance to listen to podcasts or call my mum. I’d love to be able to draw but sadly that talent never really grasped me. What do you draw?

I love sewing and make about 2/3 of my clothes. It’s such a satisfying hobby creatively – and I get to wear clothes that no-one else has. I’m on screens all day at work and love doing something non=screen for my hobby. I’m rubbish at crochet!

I’m rubbish at sewing! I’ve tried a few times for sewing to be a thing but it never meshed. Crochet just kind of chose me. I suck at drawing too. Aren’t we all just weird awesome fascinating people?
