don’t hate cleaning that much. I actually really enjoy the lines the vacuum makes on the floor when you give it a good ol’ hoovering. Dusting also pleases me greatly, especially when there’s enough grime that you can see a thick line when you wipe your cloth across a surface. It’s just so damn satisfying.

I also love coming home to a clean house. Whenever I walk into my house and everything is shiny and clean, I just want to high five myself. I’ve had a few people ask about house cleaning tips and tricks so I put together a few bits and pieces to help you have a tidy house when you don’t really like cleaning.

1. Get a Roomba

They’re perfect for in-between cleans. So many people are really weird about Roombas but I couldn’t survive without mine. I use it most days and it’s a great way to keep my house looking clean without having to do a proper vacuum every day.

2. Find a podcast you love and dedicate it to cleaning.

That way you’ll actually look forward to cleaning. My new favourite is My Favourite Murder but I’m only allowed to listen to it when I’m at the gym or cleaning the house. It makes me do both a lot more frequently.

3. Work as a team.

Dedicate a specific time to cleaning and make everyone in the house clean at that time. That way you know everyone is chipping in. Mr Smaggle and I do Power Hour most days where we whip around the house and clean for an hour. It’s just a great way to get the house spick and span without it taking all day.

4. Designate a spot for every single item in your house.

This takes a really long time to do but it’s worth it. When you see an empty spot, you know something is missing. We have a peg board where we hang our keys, sunglasses and headphones and we never have cluttered bench tops full of everyday items because we’ve got a spot to store each of our belongings.

5. Get a cleaner.

This might not be financially viable for a lot of people but for others it’s just a matter of getting over that road block in your head of paying someone to do something you can do yourself. If you genuinely can’t afford it, that’s fine but if you drop $50 at the pub every second night, you can definitely afford a cleaner.

This week on Straight and Curly, Kelly and I talking about house cleaning hacks. There’s some great tips in there so it’s definitely worth a listen.

There’s also a new episode of Sweet Teen Club live this week – Mermaids! Pop on your polka dot wiggle dress and try to kiss your teenage daughter’s boyfriend – Mrs Flax is in town!

I think it’s all about regularity with keeping houses clean. I do a tidy up before I go to bed each night – just put things away, straighten the couch pillows, make sure the kitchen is clean and dishes in the dishwasher etc. Then an hour a week is all I need to clean the house properly. If you do this every week it’s easy to stay on top of.

Totally! When things get totally out of control that’s when everything goes pear shaped. We just got back from a trip and our washing machine is broken so we’re living in a pile of clothing. It’s hell. I hate it so much.

Totally agree with Missy – a quick whip around daily just putting things away, makes the weekly clean so much shorter. I switch up the cleaning order sometimes. I usually start with the bathroom, but if I am fed up with cleaning, I’ll start in the kitchen instead. Then, by the time I get to the bathroom, there is that little lift when I realise that is the last job and cleaning time is almost over, not just starting. Kind of weird – but works! xx

Oh that’s a good one! I usually do the bathroom and my partner does the kitchen but our apartment is TINY so that makes a huge difference. 20 mins most days and our house is totally clean.

I was a working single mom, and I did do a clean up every night. Still do. Its a life saver if you’re a clean freak like me who wants the house to look clean all of the time.

Non-negotiables for me are kitchen and bathroom are clean when I go to bed. I’ve been teaching the cleaning task a night since 2005. I don’t want to spend a couple thousand dollars a year to have my house cleaned, and I don’t want to spend my weekends cleaning. I’d rather spend the 2k having fun on weekends…

These are great tips for anyone who loves a clean home.

That’s the thing – if you prefer to clean yourself than absolutely do it! Our house is teeny so our cleaner doesn’t cost much and saves us heaps of time and arguments.

I love the idea of having cleaning podcast! I am such a podcast addict lately so that might encourage me to get cleaning more often! Oh and I totally need a robot-vac thingy too. 🙂

Hiring a cleaner is so awesome. I don’t have one now but when my son was young, it was a life saver. I also used a laundry service, leave the washing on the doorstep when I went to work in the morning and come home to it washed and folded and ready to put away!

That’s totally my next thing. I went to the laundromat last week and it was like $25 to do 2 loads of washing! Laundry service would be heaps easier than that.
