How To Wear A Dress That Isn’t Exactly Flattering

How To Wear A Dress That Isn’t Exactly Flattering

I

know we aren’t supposed to talk about our body hang ups and dressing to disguise them – that’s a fad that supposedly died in the early 00s right? Pfffffft! Let’s not pretend like we don’t all still do it. I don’t like my stomach – so I don’t buy clothes that make it look chunky. It’s just common sense.

My thing is that I generally like to look as small as possible. I’m what a grandpa would call a ‘strapping young lass’. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it just means that it’s very easy for me to look MUCH bigger than I am if I wear the wrong thing. So that’s my little weird clothing shopping hang up. Every thing I buy has to be ‘flattering’.

That was until I found this dress in Cos. I debated whether or not to buy it. I usually favour clothing that comes in at my waist or is made of some kind of jersey or has some light tailoring but there was something about this dress that just made me want to take it home. I’ve been stalking a few Japanese fashion bloggers online and I’m obsessed with Kanaho’s Show. She gives zero shits about looking thin and it’s super inspiring and something I want to care less about. Plus I love that shapeless Japanese school girl uniform look.

Wearing

* Cos dress *

* Camper shoes *

* Crochet cocoon cardigan made by me – pattern is available here but if you don’t know how to crochet I can teach you!

This outfit was worn for a day of writing (so much writing!), a walk to the post office (I’m on the hunt for the perfect instagrammable but also totally usable crochet hook and it’s difficult to find such a thing), cooking a healthy dinner (I’m currently doing Highway To Health with the Straight & Curly Facebook group, as best as I can, to get my eating on track before the silly season) and an evening of shooting the November pattern release for Crochet Coach. Lovely, lovely day. I also get to see my mum this afternoon – she’s flying into town for my cousin’s 30th which is awesome because I haven’t seen her in ages. This year has been so hectic, I haven’t been ‘home’ since March. Very much looking forward to a weekend with my family… and I’ll be taking a wee break from Highway to Health to have tacos and wine with my crew because life is all about balance.

Have a beautiful weekend!

Do you think much about how flattering your clothes are? Or do you not care and just buy stuff that makes you feel awesome?

P.S. The Crochet Coach launch phase is ending really soon – if you’ve been debating whether or not to join – do it now. I have over 100 students now and I’ve got all of them crocheting away and making the most gorgeous things. Come join us – it’s such a lovely place to be.

    I would like to see this dress sans cardigan and crossed arms. From what I can see I think it looks lovely and perhaps it is only you that believes it is unflattering. I would be very happy to correct this misunderstanding!

    This year is the first time I’ve stopped giving any fucks about “flattering” and it has been such a relief to be honest. I turned 25 and finally made my peace with grueling diets, work outs, and trying to look tiny. I’ve accepted that was not how nature intended me to look and life is too short. I am loving wearing comfortable baggy, shapeless dresses and zero fucks are given about flattering. I am constantly in awe of how comfortable I am for once and kicking myself for not doing it earlier. I would wear the hell out of the dress you’re wearing, it looks fabulous!!!!

      Oh thank you! It is hard isn’t it to shake that ‘flattering’ thing and the need to be super slim. I’m not tiny, I never will be. Lets all get over it shall we? 🙂

    Maybe I am missing the point, but I fail to understand what is wrong with opting for flattering clothing. There are shapes and colours that work for me, and there are shapes and colours that work against me. Why on earth would I want to feel that my clothing is fighting me?

    I feel most comfortable in clothes that flatter me. I feel good about my body, and my clothing elevates that feeling. I don’t want to be tugging at a skirt hem — or whatever adjustment is required — all day. What helps is that I love — and look best in — fitted, waist-conscious clothing.

    Love the dress – and it does not make you look huge! Also loving the shrug cardy too – I need one!
