5 Things I’ve Tried That I Totally Sucked At

I

get that sometimes I give off the impression that I’m good at lots of things and without sounding like I’m totally up myself, I am good at lots of things but so is everyone. Facebook and blogs are also the perfect places to show people the things you’re very good at and I do this often. I’m very good at exercising regularly, crocheting, ticking everything off my to do list and making amazing salads, but you all know this because I show you these things regularly. I thought it might be a good idea to shed some light on some things I suck at, for complete transparency and just for something a little bit different.

1. Lettering

I’ve always been fascinated by calligraphy. I used to work in a newsagent in high school and we had the best collection of pens, inks and beautiful calligraphy papers. I’ve always had an amazing collection of lettering tools which is devastating because I probably have the worst handwriting on the planet. My hand writing looks like a child trying her best to write very neatly and failing miserably. I’ve even taking lettering courses as an adult and sucked even harder at it. My hands are not supposed to make magic with ink. I have now accepted it.

2. Not arriving at the airport 2 hours before my flight

I’m always at the airport 2 hours before my flight leaves. I like it, I can work at the airport and it allows hours for any screw ups. Mr Smaggle likes to arrive at the airport minutes before his flights which I’m a bit jealous of because it would be quite a time saver if I had the mental capacity to do that. A few flights ago I decided to aim to get to the airport half an hour before my flight. Of course that was the day there were hour long delays on the freeway, a band decided to slowly get their 20 billion instruments scanned at snails pace and there was a last minute gate change. This meant I was hyperventilating by the time I was sitting on the flight and I swear my heart rate didn’t drop back to normal until the flight landed in Sydney. I now don’t care if I’m 3 hours early for a flight. It’s just what I need.

3. Chin ups

I just… hang there. At F45 they have these big elastic bands that kind of help you to snap back up but you’re still pulling most of your own weight and my arms are much more suited to a smaller frame than mine. Trainers can’t understand it. They’re always like ‘But you can lift heavy weights? I don’t get it.’ I don’t get it either but it’s just not a thing my body does.

4. Building webpages without supervision

I’m actually not TOO terrible at back end blog stuff, I just need to be supervised. Sometimes I click things and break things. I don’t want to sound like a grandama but computers really do hate me sometimes. I have witnesses. I’ll try to fix a thing, it will break more, I’ll get someone to try to fix it and they’ll be like ‘Yeah… there’s something weird going on with that computer.’. It’s a whole thing, I swear.

5. Straightening my hair

I’ve never been a fan of me with straight hair but that might be because I’m terrible at straightening it. I blame my attitude though. I just don’t care that much so I end up doing a shit job. Then it looks awful and the cycle starts again. I gave up straightening my hair years ago though but I imagine I haven’t magically gained awesome hair straightening skills in that time.

Also it’s podcasts day! Kelly and I are talking about having difficult conversations which I think pretty much everyone sucks at. Yay. You can listen to this week’s episode here.

I suck at all these things too! We are loser twins! I put the push up thing down to my funny elbows. They just don’t hang and then bend back up. And the lettering / web dev / hair straightening / airport is because I have the patience of a puppy. I just cannot apply myself to anything for more than 5 minutes at a time. x

Oh we ARE loser twins! I’m built like Shetland Pony and that’s why I think I can’t do pushups.

I hear you on no. 2!!!

I suck at anything to do with hair…I can’t blow dry it, straighten it, put it into cute styles…I put it in a ponytail most days. If I feel fancy I’ll wear it out.
Oh, and on that note, I also suck at making small talk to hairdressers. I can stand in front of a lecturer theater full of students and have no problems talking to them, but put me one-on-one with someone who has to attend my mane, and I become the most social awkward person ever!
    Recent actual exchange:
    Hairdresser: ‘I love your dress!’
    Me: ‘Thanks, it’s good….?’

Bwah ha ha ha ha!!!! Love it. My one wish is that I could listen to podcasts while getting my hair cut. Impractile and rude but I still really want it.
