5 Things I Bought Ages Ago That Are Still Totally Awesome

I

know you guys love a good recommendation around these parts but truth be told, I don’t really try new things very often. At least not anymore. Yes, I’m one of those insufferable people who has discovered minimalism and I just don’t buy stuff anymore.

Even things like lipstick – I used to pick up a new one at least once a month and now I’m ploughing my way through what I already own. I just don’t want stuff around me.

Mr Smaggle and I are very discerning shoppers and we always choose quality over quantity which means most of the stuff we buy would be considered expensive. We are both far more likely to buy one pair of perfect $300 shoes per year than buy six pairs of $50 shoes. It’s a good system as we’re rarely disappointed in our purchases. We also spent a lot of time congratulating each other on our purchases. We are particularly in love with our fancy food processor we bought a year ago. It makes excellent cauli-rice. Yay us. Smug couple high five.

I was thinking about all the other things I have no regrets buying and came up with my top list of best purchases ever and I thought you guys would like to know about them.

totally awesome

Frye Boots

I bought these babies in about 2009 and they have well and truly stood the test of time. I’ve donated about five pairs of far younger boots in the time these guys have served me well. You can also still buy them in exactly this style and in about a billion different colours. They’re comfortable, and great for rain even though they’re technically not waterproof. They do take a bit of time to break in but it’s totally worth it. I’ve had them for 8 years now. Excellent boot choice.

totally awesome

Uashmama Bag

Uashmama bags are all the rage right now but I’m going to an insufferable twit and say I discovered them before they were cool. Just like Amy Schumer and Soda Streams. Any who,  I bought this tote maybe four years ago now and it’s still totally gorgeous. You can’t get this exact style anymore but they have more bag designs than you can poke a stick at. I’ve got my eye on one of their little wallets  and their backpacks once my current backpack bites the bust. I also love their little shoulder bags. Their stuff is made out of paper but it looks and acts like leather. How cool would shoes be in this material? I’m totally obsessed. I’m also pretty sure these bags are vegan which is great.

totally awesome

Merrell Mimix

I have a mate who is OBSESSED with Merrell shoes and she’s a nurse who’s allergic to high heels so I really trusted her when she said they’re the most comfortable shoes she’s ever worn.

These are the most comfortable shoes anyone has worn. I’ve had two pairs of these for about two years each and they’re both still going strong. I don’t know if you’re supposed to machine wash them, but I do and they come out as good as new. They’re like sneakers – I can wear them all day with no worries at all. I think I’m now destined to have a pair of nude Merrells on the go at all times.

totally awesome

BOSE Noise Cancelling Headphones

Forgive the super sultry pose but that’s me wearing them above. Mr Smaggle has long been fan of noise cancelling headphones and he strongly encouraged me to buy these about a year ago. I thought they were a bit pricey ($500) and a wasteful luxury item I could live without. I have an equipment budget for my business that I have to spend every year and last year I had enough for the headphones so I kind of begrudgingly bought them. They have been attached to my head ever since. I wear them all day to block out office and cafe noises and I can sit right next to Mr Smaggle in our tiny one bedroom apartment and watch TV with my headphones and not even hear him have a meeting right next to me. I will also never get on a plane without these – they cut out all the plane noises and I swear they help with jet lag because your brain isn’t all fuzzy from the weird compressed sounds on flights. I was toying up getting the black or silver but I went with silver because they make me feel like Astronaut Brittany Spears. No regrets.

totally awesome

Karton Bed

We bought our Karton bed in 2011 and it’s still holding strong. The drawers underneath are a bit tatty but we’re planning on moving this year so we’ll just recycle our current bed and honestly we’ll probably just get another Karton one. The under the bed storage is awesome, it’s really comfy if you put a decent mattress on it (which we have) and it’s totally recyclable.

My uni friends have the Bose noise cancelling headphones and love them! Unfortunately I have tinnitus and when I put them on all I can hear is my tinnitus! Maddening!

I love those boots! I do really need a good quality pair, maybe with birthday money this year 🙂

I too am working my way through all my lipsticks, I have a problem with buying pink lipsticks in the same but a little bit different shade.

one thing I don’t regret buying is a better quality printer, it’s stood the test of time and since I print so much stuff for uni (I’m old school and still hand write notes) it’s been a mind settler to know I can just print anytime

Oh no! That’s heart breaking. I love mine, they’re actually on my head the entire time. I also have a mad pair of Eccos that are made of gortex and I LOVE them.

I LOVE my birkenstocks, and like you will point out that I was probably born wearing a pair as I loved them long before they were fashionable. I am a slow convert to buying less but buying better with all things and now realise that real linen/cotton/silk/leather is worth paying for when it comes to apparel and accessories (Sorry vegans!)

Love your blog! I’m edging towards buying less and living more. I own and still love a 10 year old pair of D.Co Copenhagen long flat boots and a 30 year old second hand motorcycle jacket.
