The 13 Piece Travel Capsule Wardrobe: Day 3

his was day 3 of my capsule wardrobe challenge and it was just a teeny bit chilly so I popped on my grey knit tights. If you haven’t yet read about my 13 piece travel capsule wardrobe challenge here’s where I’m up to so far.

The 13 Piece Travel Capsule Wardrobe Day 1

The 13 Piece Travel Capsule Wardrobe Day 2

Basically, I’m travelling around for a few months and these are the only items I packed with me.

capsule wardrobe

1. White cotton dress from Cos

2. Black organic cotton dress from Gorman

3. Striped cotton dress from Muji

4. Patterned dress from Marimekko

5. Oversized cotton cardigan from Vinnies

6. Nude ballet flats from Merrell

7. Sandals from Toms

8. Leather boots from Ecco

9. Cotton scarf from Sportsgirl

10. Warm wrap (hand crocheted by me – learn to make your own!)

11. Black opaque tights

12. Grey knit tights

13. Down jacket from Muji

So every day, I only have 13 items to choose from every day. So far it’s been totally perfect. It saves me heaps of time and I can dress from summer days and chilly winter days too. Here’s what I put together for Day 3 of the challenge.

Wearing

2 (black cotton dress) + 12 (grey knit tights) + 8 (boots) + 9 (cotton scarf)

This was worn for a day of photography, writing and podcasting in the farm house. This outfit was comfy and toasty when the temperature dropped in the afternoon. This dress is so versatile that’s what I love about cotton – it’s weirdly cool and warm at the same time.

Oh and I forgot to tell you guys I’m off to Indonesia tomorrow for a week with World Vision Australia. I travelled to India with them in 2011 and it was a life changing experience. This time I’ll be presenting a workshop to the WV Indonesia team on social media. It’s looking like May is going to be a pretty kick butt month.

Also would anyone be keen to see a capsule Bali wardrobe? I’m thinking of packing VERY lightly for Indonesia… like taking a carry on suitcase instead of a giant one. Do you think I could go to Indonesia with just 9 items? Shall I go for it?

What’s your biggest challenge when packing for a trip and trying to keep your suitcase as light as possible?

It’s so different to India – it’s awesome but just a totally different land!

This is an amazing idea! I’ve tried the capsule wardrobe but it’s never worked for me. But I’m super excited to see how you go.

As of next month I’m going to be travelling for 3 months and today I sat down to make a list for my ‘capsule’ travel wardrobe. Well, unfortunately I did not do as well as you – it came down to 35 items….epic fail! I don’t think I could cope with so few items because sad as it is, I am a bit attached to my clothes and I know I would start to miss them after that long. But in my defense I need to pack for a range of things; work wear for a professional environment (doing a bit of a working holiday you see) denim coveralls, heavy boots and flannie shirts for all of the hiking I will be doing (they have lymes where I’m going to be so I’m not fucking around) fancy outfits for going to the opera and ballet and something nice to wear for visiting museums and sight seeing. While at the same time making sure there is stuff for a hot summer but also very cold European autumn. However, I’ve made sure that the majority of the stuff I’m taking is made of light fabrics like rayon and wearing all the heavy winter stuff on the plane! I have a lot of respect for all of the sleek and polished minimalists out there but I don’t think I will ever be able to take up your clever ways – I love lots of stuff!!!

That’s totally your thing though and you rock it. If fashion is your thing – which is for you! – then go for it! It’s the people who pack 4 pairs of identical pants and only wear 1 pair that can benefit from this!

I need that scarf for my hair! At least…when it gets long enough to be uncooperative. We’ll see how curly it gets when it grows out a little bit. That dress really looks cute on you, by the way. This is exactly why I need to go clothes shopping again. I have a lot of clothes I wear that are getting majorly uncomfortable (due to my weight but don’t ask!) and I need to do some changing around. I love the idea of having a much smaller wardrobe anyway. Less to clean, #amiright?

I honestly think this scarf is the best thing I’ve ever bought. I rarely leave the house without it!

I need a scarf like that but have a few that NEVER get worn. Maybe next winter when it’s a little cooler out here. It’s like 80/90 degrees Fahrenheit out there in the southeastern United States so it’s too hot for a scarf now. My hair is so thick I’d go crazy!

Nine items for a week is totally doable esp for a hot climate. The only real issue is if it’s humid and your clothes get all sweaty.

Just have to get them laundered a lot! I might cut it down to 6 items… true challenge!

I really want to embrace the tights and stockings – I love skirts and dresses and shorts but I’ve just moved to Melbourne. Whenever I wear tights and stockings they make my thighs feel almost itchy. I’m assuming this is because a lot of them are made with synthetic fibres now. Do you have any brands you recommend?

I don’t have a huge issue with itch (unless it unexpectedly gets hot!) but I wear cotton knit ones a lot – I don’t have a brand I’m tied to I tend to just buy what’s available at the time I need them!

Mostly my challenge is that I’m not super comfortable in my body at the moment so that makes it hard for me to know what I’m going to be comfortable wearing on any given day. Trying to make my health a priority this year so I can get over this problem (and other issues, obviously.

Also, sorry for the mass of comments today – I’m all caught up now! 😉
